Why do you think Mona Lisa is smiling?? Why are the other paintings never show anyone smiling during that era? This is a serious questions and no perverted replies accepted! ;)

I cant help myself...but I do suspect that Mona Lisa was getting a pussy job at that time... :lick:

Heh heh.

Serious

I had to get it out of my system first...but actually I think she may have been like me...I can't stay serious long enough...she may have been amused by the painting of her portrait...and trying not to laugh.

Smiles!

Maybe Leonardo Da Vinci was naked when he painted her portrait? I really don't know, but hoped someone knows a good theory.

According to this site, it is a self-portrait of Leonardo, but it looks like as if he was a woman!

yea thats what the word is going around that Mona Lisa was actually Leonardo with himself painted as a woman -- as for the smile -- good question i dunno why he was smiling in the portrait uhmm

Make sense

Look at old fashion photograph, they use werid camera that which take long time for to get picutre. That make people lost patience and losing their smile slowly. Most picture from early 1900's or so, many people don't smile much.

I have a dumb question. When did the mirror invented? come out in 1400's? If so, he might look at the mirror too much while painting on the pine wood.

Myself, I admire Mona Lisa. Figure it out after look at my avatar. :thumb:

Maybe the smile on the Mona Lisa was created to break with a long-standing tradition in the art world of the day where no smiles were crafted in portraits;thereby blazing a new trail, a new genre?? Just off the top of my head....

My guess.. Mona lisa have no choice and kept stay smiling while painting job must to til be done! Atternative peoples are watch'n Mona and make sure not moves.. probably whipp'n her... Pretty awful long years ago alikely 1900's
well sorry I'm not born that year of... :?:

It could be just himself!

Mona Lisa (La Jaconde, as it is known in France where the painting is held in) is really an interesting piece of work. I never saw it that way that it might be a self portrait?

I agree with some people here... Years ago, people didn't smile when taking pics. Maybe it could be because they had bad teeth? or maybe it was considered to be a social faux pas years ago to smile in photos or paintings.

Read the book by Dan Brown

"The Da Vinci Code"

I highly recommend it, and it gives some insight on the Mona Lisa

[sighing]
A self-portrait of Da Vinci? PUH-LEASE.

[swiping out her art history textbook] It is actually a portrait of a lady, ... in 1500 (not 1900 or anything)... [sighing] everybody needs to take a course in art history... [moving on]

The art historians have discovered hard evidences to believe that the true identity of the lady, whom happened to be Maria Gherardini, the wife of Francese del Giocondo. The painting got its name because the wife was usually called, "my lady" because she was wealthy, and the italian word for my lady is Mona Lisa- a contraction of ma donna- my lady.

Didja know the painting was BIGGER than what it appeared to be.. it started out with an anicent Greek structure- withe columns in the far right in the background but somebody decided to CUT it off so it only had the lady in the center. The lady was supposed to be appeared inside, (you see those little wall behind her int he below? She is supposed to sit in the "hallway" with open-window to see the landscape)

The only reason she APPEARED to smile is because of the shade and the painting tenchique he used. If one removes all the shades and so on, it would look like as if her mouth is like this :-| but the shades techique- called "chiaroscuro" which added a smoky effect, ends up "dimpling" her little "grin"...

(SO MANY of painting were CUT off or altered.... DAMN them!)

..........Any art history questions, do ask me. :) I got all facts and everything from ancient to modern arts in my wonderful two thick books. :D

[edit: I added the picture to give you an idea of the little wall and etc that I mentioned in my entry.]

[EDIT AGAIN: And if you disagree about the "smoky" effect, then the ONLY other theory that I am willing to accept is that da Vinci (not Da Vinci...!!) was trying to break away from the art tradition. Remmeber, 1500s was the period of Roman Catholic where if one appears to have too much fun/enjoyment, it is a SIN. All the paintings during that period were Virgin Mary, Jesus H Christ and zillion of other religious figures... and out of the blue, we got some rich lady smiling away. da Vinci was a philospher and open-minded... yet he did the religious paintings but he did enjoy the "nature", the way the nature intended everything to be and he would paint/draw them the EXACTLY way. Maybe taht lady was happy to be frigging rich and had da Vinci doing her portrait and da Vinci included it because that was waht he was SEEING. Get me?]

She was first smile female, wondering who first male who smiled on painting??

Maybe Leonardo Da Vinci was drunk and made a little mistake to make a smile??
