Yep, I just saw it on the breaking news. :( Rest in peace miners. There was a miscommunication reported that all had survived but, Only one had who is 27 years old, 12 had already been dead. The families are mad because they were told that they made it alive. tsk tsk!

R.I.P. to 12 of them :(

I can't believe they just said it. all 12 men are dead and 1 is alive and in criticial condition...

Oh geee....

That's terrible tragely....
*praying* for them who lost their love ones greivence... *breaking hearts*

Gotta go run to my work (2nd day of my work) :D
bye all.. see you laterz...

FYI: They knew it within 20 minutes later that the 12 miners were dead, and did not notify the families, until few hours later. So, I can see how the families reaction was not a good one. :(

What??? I didn't know about this until now. Oh I can imagine how the families and friends of the miners are going through after receiving wrong information about them being found alive. Gotta watch news now.

This is just so sad and unnecessary - this report says that the mine was found unsafe last year and was still in operation...*smh*

TALLMANSVILLE, W.Va. - In a stunning and heartbreaking reversal, family members were told early Wednesday that 12 of 13 trapped coal miners were dead — three hours after they began celebrating news that 12 had survived.

The sole survivor, Randal McCloy, was in critical condition with a collapsed lung and dehydration but no sign of brain damage or carbon monoxide poisoning after being trapped by an explosion for more than 42 hours, a doctor said. At 27, McCloy was among the youngest in the group.

The last of the 12 bodies were taken out of the mine at midmorning. The cause of death was not disclosed, but it appeared it was not the blast that killed them.

Officials said the 12 were found together behind a curtain-like fabric barrier they had set up to keep out carbon monoxide gas, which was detected in deadly concentrations inside the mine.

“It’s sorrow beyond belief,” Ben Hatfield, chief executive officer of mine owner International Coal Group, said during a news conference at which the deaths were announced.

“Our nation mourns those who lost their lives,” President Bush said, speaking in Washington.

Gov. Joe Manchin said that, “about the confusion, I can’t tell you of anything more heart-wrenching that I’ve ever gone through in my life. Nothing.”

Mine's grim record
“I can feel the outrage,” he later told NBC’s “Today” show, referring to the anger from the victims’ families. They had received word, the origin of which is still not certain, that 12 had survived only to be told three hours later that 12 had died.

Manchin said the state would investigate the cause of the explosion, the miscommunication and the mine’s numerous safety and health violations last year. “We’re going to look into this,” Manchin vowed.

John Bennett, whose father Jim Bennett was one of the victims and had been due to retire in April, complained that his father would “tell me how unsafe the mine is.”

Problems at the mine had been “going on for months ... and they still send men in,” Bennett told “Today,” adding that he felt that if the mine owner had allowed workers to unionize the violations wouldn’t have happened.

I wouldnt be - I was reading a later report and it sounded like some might just do that.

Anne Meredith, whose father died in the incident, said: “I feel that we were lied to all along,” adding that she planned to sue ICG.

It is very unfortunate to learn that something like this has had happened. I certainly would not blame the family for venting their anger out to those that had said the miners were alive in the first place. The officials should have checked and confirmed the information before informing the family and the media about the miners being alive or dead instead of telling the families about the miner's condition. Now, I would not be surprised about hearing several lawsuits that are coming their way just as it says in the above quote.

It's like miner's family were hoping for the best and just when they thought it was over only to get punched in the stomach to learn that information was reversed. Nobody should have went through that emotional roller coaster.

Lastly, I'd like to say that the miners has had put a brave face on for everyone else whether the mining condition was not safe enough with the high levels of carbon monoxide. Rest In Peace, You Miners. Our thoughts and prayers goes to your families.

Oh yeah, I thought 12 people were alive because of what they said last nite but today I found out all of them died, and I can't believe I'm hearing this, it was really sad....Looks like a lawsuit will be coming soon, cause alot of people are angry, even their families when they thought they were alive as they were told so for million of us who thought the same thing...

I don't blame the families at all for being really upset about this whole thing, and my prayers goes out to them all....

I'm so shocked! I watched the CNN news til 3 am. The officials waited 3 hours later to tell them that 12 died and 1 survived. I'd be pissed if I was a family member! I honestly can't believe they did that.

yeah I thought they were alive til I took a nap then woke up at 2am from a nap and used computer for a while til I saw the news i was like WTF?! sheesh.. oh well I hope families are doin well and I don't blame them for being mad..
