MIAMI - A passenger who claimed to have a bomb in a carry-on bag was shot and killed by a federal air marshal Wednesday on a jetway to an American Airlines plane that had arrived from Colombia, officials said.

Homeland Security Department spokesman Brian Doyle said the dead passenger was a 44-year-old U.S. citizen. NBC News’ Pete Williams said an official identified the man as Rigoberto Alpizar.

It was the first time since the Sept. 11 attacks that an air marshal had shot at a passenger or suspect, he said. A witness said that the man frantically ran down the aisle of the Boeing 757 and that a woman with him said he was mentally ill.

The passenger, who indicated there was a bomb in the bag, was confronted by air marshals but ran off the aircraft, Doyle said.

The marshals pursued and ordered the passenger to get on the ground, but the man did not comply and was shot when apparently reaching into the bag, Doyle said.

NBC News confirmed that authorities searching the man’s carry-on bag did not find a bomb.

Passenger Mary Gardner told WTVJ in Miami that the man ran down the aisle from the rear of the plane. “He was frantic, his arms flailing in the air,” she said. She said a woman followed, shouting, “My husband! My husband!”

Man reportedly bipolar
Gardner said she heard the woman say her husband was bipolar and had not had his medication.

The plane, Flight 924, had arrived from Medellin, Colombia, at 12:16 p.m. and was scheduled to depart two hours later for Orlando, American Airlines spokesman Tim Wagner said.

“I don’t know yet if the passenger had been on the plane and was getting off, or was starting to board the aircraft,” he said.

The shooting happened shortly after 2 p.m., suggesting passengers may have already been preparing to depart, he said. About 105 passengers scheduled to fly to Orlando, he said.

Martin Gonzalez, spokesman for Colombia’s civil aviation agency, said the flight had “left normally with no problems.”

Rep. Ed Markey, D-Mass., a senior member of the Homeland Security Committee, praised the air marshals’ actions.

“Air marshals put their lives on the line every day to keep us safe,” he said. “Thanks to the efforts of an alert air marshal, an individual was prevented from causing a potentially dangerous situation on the American Airlines flight that could have harmed passengers and crew members.”

Air Marshals are trained to shoot to kill. They have the most stringent small-arms training standards among law enforcement agencies.

There were only 32 air marshals at the time of the Sept. 11 attacks. The Bush administration hired thousands more afterward, though the exact number is classified.

That is why it does not pay to play around or even joke immaturely on the plane saying " I got a bomb. "

Wheter you are mentally ill or not, you had better know this is no joke when a bomb is annouced. The cops and the military got a job to do, that is saving lives wheter it is a bomb scare or unfortunately , the real deal.

NOBODY CAN AFFORD TO ASSUME. POLICE AND AIRLINES GOTTA ASSUME HE GOT A BOMB WHETER HE HAS ONE OR NOT WHETER HE IS CRAZY OR NOT. REMEMBER THOSE 9/11 TERRORISTS THEY DID NOT LOOK LIKE CRAZY MEN. THEY WERE NORMAL MEN WHICH MADE THEM EXTREMELY MORE DANGEROUS than a highly visible and crazy acting man.

I am sorry a mentally ill person was killed in the course of a US Homeland Security situation. Maybe before 9/11 they might have figured he was mentally ill and took a different approach but not anymore. Not after 9/11

Heath,

Better look into that article more...the U.S. Marshals said that the man said he had a bomb. From what eyewitnesses have said, there wasn't a bomb, no mention of it and your beloved government legally shot and killed a mentally ill man. That, my friend, is called, Legalized Murder. Who is next? Would a deaf person be shot and killed because they were using asl? You need to act responsible and get your news from more than one source...listen to them all.

Why would the police shoot someone using ASL? There's no reason for that. It's more of an ethical issue.

For instance, if you see your friend named Bob at the airport... do you yell his name? No. You don't. Why? Yelling "Bob!" could cause mass panic cuz people might think that you said "BOMB!"

Another example would be on the plane. If you got on the airplane and saw your friend seated a few rows back. Do you holler, "Hi, Jack!"? No, you don't. Why? People will most likely misinterpret that as "HIJACK!" and panic.

Even though both are harmless phrases, they can be misinterpretted and get people in trouble. It's just like what happened with that lady and her cat last week. She called the police several times and they didn't come. She then changed her plead for help by saying "my baby" instead of "my cat". Technically, her cat's name was Baby... but saying that was misinterpretted. She ended up getting fined for it.

Now that is something we all should think about. We wouldn't want the air marshalls shoot at us :Ohno:

Exactly!

This topic was brought up in an ethics class I was taking a couple years ago. There are a lot of issues related to laws and ethics. Sometimes, they mix... due to specific circumstances.

imo regardless or not, they need to also listen to the lady, and then approached him differently without scaring the man. he ran in fear cuz he was not all there, makes sense to me, even if ur trained to shoot to kill, listen to all around you, not be trigger happy about it, in this day and age, too many are getting killed for every little thing. from a bomb to a misinterpeted comment. we can't say the right things so we have to keep our mouth shut no matter what and steer clear of calling another person's name in the name of getting shot at. i'm not one for letting myself get harmed over those stupid poeple. check the body langague and most of all, check the eyes. if he's not there then don't shoot just wait til he is subdued and is detained then ull avoid being shot at and save lives cuz he cld have had a deonator in his hand if u had shot him and the reaction would have triggered the bomb IF there was any in his hands. airmarasal made a grave mistake when he shot the suspect who's bipolar. thats IMO. safety first before shooting anyone. thats the point of this.

Bummer... I do think the marshal could have done something differently such as shooting in the leg or disarm the guy in a different manner.

Suppose the man and woman were real terrorists. Suddenly, the man feels guilty about bombing the plane. So, he decides to warn everyone. However, the woman doesn't want the bombing plan to be ruined... so she says he's her husband and has a mental problem. What are the air marshals going to do? Hestitate? I guess they will...

BOOM!

Too late! Everyone's dead. :(

VamPyroX You got a good point there , again like I said Do not play around with the B word at all ( B word = Bomb ) or the H word for that matter at all. ( H word = Hijack airplane ). I also agree with not using our voices to talk because we may be misunderstood because we have Deaf voices which are not the same and as clear like hearing people's voices. Best to use ASL and when talking in ASL make sure your signs do not look like anything that could be misunderstood to be the B word or the H word also especially watch your body language and facial expressions when you are at the airport or flying on the airplane because hearing people are fascinated with American Sign Language ( ASL ) then all of a sudden they think you just said the B word and panic spreads through the plane then you are wondering what is wrong and the US Marshals get up and angrily point the business end of their guns to you and you are obivously stunned , innocent and mad, angry hurt with a wounded-like shock that somebody is pointing a gun in front of you and messing with your life for basically nothing :squint: but the US Marshals has gotta respond to any threat like the scream of a woman or something anyhow so you can see how an innocent situation can easily turn very dangerous all because of a misunderstanding so shut off our Deaf voices and check our body language and facial expressions when going to the airport or on a plane flying.... Please have a happy flying for Merry Christmas. I also think this is a very timely and appropriate posting considering we are close to Merry Christmas and many Deaf people travel and fly ( or take another means of transportation like Amtrak don't say the B word or the H word, check your body language and facial expressions before you go to the train station too ) Merry Christmas and God Bless.... please have a safe travelling and enjoy being with your families !!!!

The guy said he had a BOMB.
He then failed to follow instructions.

What the hell do you think they should do in those situations?

I'm with Vampy on this one, a bomb threat is very serious and it cannot be delayed on weather he is carrying a bomb or not. Can't take threats like this lightly, Making a bomb threat is against the law. Remember what happen on Sept. 11th? It doesn't matter who said it, They have to act right away to the situation, weather or not found any evidence of a bomb. They have to think about all the people on the plane the safely of those people. They cannot take risk on delaying to find out if he had a bomb in his bag or not. I'm sorry that this guy died in the result of his health reason. but never say the word "bomb" on planes or anywhere all that matters, because, it's gets you no where but in deep trouble. It's a lesson to learn for everyone. It's important to talk to your love ones, and your children about bomb threats, and to not say it anywhere at anytime. ;)

:rl: US Marshals have to shoot to kill, even if the bomb threat turns out to be false. They gotta shoot to kill. There is no another way. Shoot to kill period.:rifle:

U have a very good point here, I think we have to be careful what we say , otherwise, we might end up getting shot at....

 right!

I think they were right in their actions. He said he had a bomb and he was reaching in his bag. Are the air marshalls really going to ask "Do you really have a bomb in there?"...KABOOOM. I guess he did. Too late. It is a tragedy that he was killed, but this also shows the terrorist out there that we mean business and don't F*&# with us!.

You don't read careful. The man FAILED follow the INSTRUCTIONS by US Marshals.

It's like..."Freeze! or I will shot you!", have you heard that one before, hmm?

Hi, I did a search on Google video clips and most were graphic and too disgusting to show but I found two clean ones that will not bother your mind and make you numb for days on end and then you will wish you never saw these video clips to even begin with so here you go with two clean ones okay ? Let me explain briefly what these video clips are that I found then the video clip links are there....

It is supposed to be a Volkswagen t.v. commerical spoof.

I am of German-American descent I have reason to believe Volkswagen headquarters officially would not make a joke.

I think this is likely a video of a dark comedy spoof somebody maybe a smart teenager with good computer skills made this as comic relief in these days and times we are now living in but it does make you think and debate. This is also eye opening and it probably will give you a better understanding of why the US Marshals shot the mentally ill guy wheter he had a bomb or not. Here is the video. It is a clean video clip.

The next one is some kids were playing with fireworks and I think this an excellent example of why you do not want a suicide bomber near you. Nobody in their right mind would. The kids set up 2 boys toy action guys and one was full of firecrackers on the toy action's body. Of course, in real life it would be much more violent with body parts flying or vaporized people and just a mist of blood and splattered guts and nothing else there. Scary to think about ....This is a clean video clip.
