Left with Nothing

This more than sad, it's disgusting! We give billions of $$$ to other countries
and the guy fought for his country and the government can't give him hardship financial for $134 .00!

Dementia seems to have contributed to this outcome. Pity he had no family assisting him to keep up with his finances.

Or had the bank help him . This it really disgusting knowing the poor guy has dementia. You would think his doctor tried to find someone to help him.

WTF? I never knew that it could happen like that. Even though the mortgage has been paid off, an investor who pays property tax automatically owns the house that he/she didn't buy. Is that even legal? Where's Pres Obama?

that awful but as x service man could he get help from them....where is he now

I have always believed in the goodness of people, even tho' many friends/family have said to me...."They don't Care"!....It's more prominent these days, and brings a sadness to my mind....seems people are always out for the Buck, no matter who they step on to get it, even who they cheat.....Compassion and empathy?....Hard to find.

How would a bank help him? He didn't have a mortgage because the house was paid off. He owed taxes, not a mortgage payment.

The poor man has dementia. It's possible he didn't even know what was happening, so he didn't know he had to request help. Sadly, elderly people with problems but no family members or close friends to help are stuck in the quagmire of confusing laws and paper work. There are predators out there circling around, ready to take advantage of vulnerable adults.

The predators who take advantage of people are obvious evils.

Less obvious are the confused elders without advocates to help them thru this legal mess.

Also not obvious, until it hits, are these sneaky laws that make such trickery possible.

I believe there probably are people willing to help but they aren't aware of what's going on. Sadly, the unethical people keep up with the laws better than the advocating people.

Also, there are many elderly people living alone either by choice or circumstance. When they can't keep up with stuff, who knows about it?

I have a MIL who has touches of dementia but she totally refuses help (except for specific things she wants, when she wants them), and would never, ever share any of her financial situations with family members. She lives alone and doesn't want people "snooping around." What can we do? :dunno:

It might be a good idea to know the laws of your county and state.

Delinquent Tax Sale Frequently Asked Questions

In our area, the homeowner has up to one year to redeem back the property even after it's been sold at auction.

In our county, there is totally exempt from property tax for people who are 65 years old or over, or disability that receive SS money, or disabled veterans.

The situation with man in first article made me think that buy a house in Alabama is better because of low property tax but I don't like their environment.

Are you saying that there's no law protecting elderly homeowners with health/mental problems?

Are you saying that there's no law protecting elderly homeowners with health/mental problems?

In DC, no, they don't have law to protect the elderly homeowners with health/mental problem.

It is depending on state, county if you don't pay property tax.

The bank could had help the guy set up an account with the city , I would think there had to had been at least one teller in the bank that had some compassion for he guy and helped him. I know some banks will look after their older customers . And I know it was his taxes NOT his mortgage.
My mother got extra help when she the bank , a teller would let my mom go into an office and sit in a comfortable chair while the teller made the deposit for her. Mom could not stand up very long so a teller took compassion on her and when the extra mile for mom. At one banks did treat their customers as people but now it more about how much $$$ you have in their money.
