Kids: Boy Pulled Gun on School Bus

An 11-year-old New Haven boy is accused of pulling out a gun and starting to threaten at least one other student while on a Datco bus in Milford, Milford police said.

The bus was dropping off the New Haven children at an elementary school in Milford. Police won't say which one, but the bus usually drops off students at the Meadowside, Pumpkin Delight and Simon Lake schools.

"It's frightening because you're not there with your kid. You have to rely on another adult to supervise them and everything," said Stephanie DeCesare, who has a child at Simon Lake.

The alleged incident happened in March or April. The allegations came to light Wednesday when several students spoke up and the information reached their principal.

The students said they did not come forward earlier because "they were in fear of saying anything.”

When school officials became aware of it, they immediately told police, who started an investigation. Five students said they witnessed the alleged threat.

"Hopefully the kids are telling the truth. It's not just a hoax. You have to be concerned with something like that, so hopefully the police will investigate," said Frank Streeter, whose son goes to Meadowside.

Police searched the boy's New Haven home and found no firearms. So far no charges have been filed. Police say they are working with the school and bus company to figure out what happened.

This and other bus incidents is what burns me up about not having extra staff on the bus. These bus drivers are hauling kids, and has to focus on driving. How can children be properly supervised. Bus drivers has to handle the children and focus on driving.

It is insane!

You better believe it!...I stated before that the bus driver has to drive that huge bus with 30-50 kids on it, fight the traffic...and also "supervise" the kids. No monitors on the bus!

You could never pay me enuf to be a school bus driver!

And here in Fla., next week is the last week of school....and every year, there are more fights at school and on the bus....I told my boys if any fights started on the bus, then I would take them to and from school.

IMO....just "one" incident of bad behavior on the bus...the student should be banned from riding that bus! Let the parents figure out how to get the child back and forth to school. This may sound harsh....but some kids won't listen, start fights, won't sit down when told to. And who do I blame? THE PARENTS!

I would think twice before putting all the blame on parents...one of my brothers had problems growing up with fights, threats, pulling guns on people and so on but my dad and stepmom raised him and their other two sons to respect others, not to fight, and etc. My brother was born with serious mental health issues.

I agree, they should have at least one extra adult monitor to supervise the kids. It's so much safer that way.

Sorry to hear about ur brother. Ummm, you said "born" with serious mental health issues?

But for the safety of all the students on the bus, any disruptive child should be removed.

Yea, he was expelled from different schools and from riding on the buses. My dad and stepdad agreed to the decisions. However, they couldnt keep him at home for they would have gotten arrested for deliquency. The have sent him away to boarding school (costed $60K) only to have him run away. He has been in and out of jail. Yet, people label them as bad parents without really understanding the magnitude of their struggles to get him on the right track. Their 2 other boys are doing fine and one has graduated and is working.

Yea, I remember when I was a kid riding on the bus. Some boys kept throwing rocks at other kids and the poor bus driver was trying to control it when driving. Looking back, I wish I had helped but I didnt understand the implications of the situation.

I do apolige somewhat....some parents don't really care, but urs did...it's the "bad parents" that make the "good and trying parents" look bad. We've had so many incidents here where I live, so many bus drivers quitting, some just parking the bus and telling the kids "to find their own way home."

Many kids are "home schooled" because of these problems.

Having monitors on the bus is the only solution I can think of. Then again, if a kid pulls a gun....The best solution then would be for the driver to pull over and get the kids off the bus.

No problem and I agree about having a monitor on the bus would help. I wonder if the counties or districts are too strapped for cash to be able to pay for the costs of hiring a monitor on every bus or prefer to use the money on other things? At the Deaf school where I work at, all buses have monitors and it is amazing cuz these buses are not even half full!

Yeah probably, in my city they do have an adult monitor on every school buses. That really helps keep kids under control, so the bus driver doesn't have to take up that much of responsibilities.

Duval County, Jacksonville, Fla. is the biggest school district (correct me if I'm wrong) but feel sure it is. And no monitors on the school buses....The county is strapped for cash, and next year will even be forcing some kids to walk farther to school, eliminating certain school bus stops.

yeah and I never forgot when I was on yellow bus few boys wud be drooling over girls and do stuff that bus driver wud never bust us.. and one time i was crawling under bus bench and moving while bus was moving. lol never got busted but did that with my former friend she was bullying me when I was younger til I was about 17 so we stopped being friends after that day tho. I don't know why but oh well I don't regret being friends with her but I hated the most was letting her beating me down for no reason...

and don't forget shooting can occur on any buses or for kids too or public transportation too.. :P

The school board is responsible for insuring students safety.

Makes me wonder where is the Florida Lottery money is really going to. It is suppose to support education and schools. and tax payers money etc.

I am sure they can squeeze in an assistance on buses. Given at least assign a safety patrol(a student to do so.)
