I find the judge's action shown by this article and the video very offensive. Its like our decades of work educating the courthouses of our accommodation needs has gone out the window overnight.

To see the video of the judge shouting looks like he is making a mockery of our disability.

What an ignorant dumbf*ck.

That kind of crap is a HUGE no no for me.

I dont see any problem.

It is just a misdemeanor charge againist 55 years old man with simple hearing loss who is not deaf nor fluent in ASL.

Did he request ASL interpreter? Nope, he is not famililar with ADA.

His public lawyer is responsibity to take care of her client to ensure that he gets a fair process.

Why do the modern people are upset with the judge's behalf even though many judges shout/yell in the court in thousand of years without using any electronicial microwave and speakers......

Yes Richard LMM find this insult Deaf... The man did do wrong break law, But the Judge himself was insulting the Deaf.. LMM email Judge her writing... let's see if Judge can understand her writing..LOL Yes I did her with some English gloss.. So Judge gets her point!

Thank for report Richard.....

I'm not so much upset about the judge yelling...as he was trying to get the guy to hear him. The part that upsets me is that the judge said the guy was wasting the courts time and then through him in jail. He's already been in jail for 5 days. Not sure what its like where that is, but here a little pot will not get you 5 days...in fact, you usually won't get any time in jail.

Gosh, I hate it when people yell at those who bearly hear, it just turns me off...

I hope I never have that judge, cause IF I were to tell this judge I couldn't hear, then he may as well scream to see if I could actually hear him, just like the lady at kmart years ago when I made payments on a layway, she had to scream so loud after I told her I couldn't hear her because I'm deaf, but I didn't expect her to think that the only way I could hear is for them to scream louder

:dunno:

WTF!?

Some people are just so clueless what hearing Impaired or deaf really means, Can't hear shit! Why in the world do people scream thinking that a deaf or hearing impaired person can hear? He should have gotten a sign language interpreter period!

If he doesn't sign (and most people with a hearing loss don't), then what good would that do except waste public money (which could otherwise be spent on other things, *including* productive user of interpreters) and further aggravate the judge?

Hon, he's not deaf, he just have a hearing loss cause he's older, just like there are some old folks that may have a hearing loss as well too ...

But you're right, it doesn't make it OK for people to scream at those who has hearing loss, I don't scream at my grandmother even she can not hear well..

On the video it looks like the black man can sign at the begin, then he use his voice most of the time. Look at it carefully.

I didn't say he was deaf, I was making a point about why people think shouting and yelling does help those who are deaf, hard of hearing, hearing impaired to hear? That's my point.

Maybe he is HOH? Who knows?

I just emailed my dad the link and my opinion.. He is out of town til either sunday or monday, so I will wait and hear from him via e mail or if he will gonna talk about it at work then I will let you all what he thinks since he is court baliff.

Unfortunately after discussing this with people, that the ADA dont really apply to people who have been involved with illegal drugs.

However the presumption of innocence until proven guilty appears to become even more blurry especially in hicktown states that screw up the US elections and other people's rights. This is "Florida" the state that turns a lot of the progress we've made backwards.

Even though he exercised excessive ignorance with this particular case, I'm finding that the judge himself appears to be one of the most liberal of the judges in the area based on his soft stance on drug, DUI, and repeat offenders.

I don't think the defendant was signing. It looked like he gestured to his attorney. But he clearly spoke to the judge. If the defendant was late-deafened or HoH, and literate, perhaps he should use CART or a similar keyboard system for communication in court.

Rather than the judge stating that it was a "waste of time", he should have rescheduled the hearing, and ordered the attorney to arrange for a way to facilitate communication thru another means.

I agree with you about the CART. Dang it wouldnt be wasting time if they get the right equipment set up. Duhhhhhhhhhhh!!!

I wasn't aware that court system had a cart or a similar keyboard system for communication in court. What exactly does it do? Would a deaf person be typing everything while the judge has one too to read it?

Are you saying the attorney (and the defendant by association) needs to pay for it? I thought the court was supposed to do that?
