What is it about this forum?
I've seen it in other forums, but the extremes the intolerance reaches around here is of a rare quality I've seen in very few forums over my years on the Internet. I suppose part of it is the fact that this site attracts people from SO many walks of life, unlike some of the more specialized sites I'm used to--but that still doesn't mean it ought to be a community norm.
It's been very saddening to watch the bickering around here, between the various groups of people for causes ranging all the way from a person's language preferences to being on opposite sides of the aisle politically. And one of the most mindblowing ones has been watching the arguments among Christians around here--some of whom really aren't that far apart from each other and are really splitting hairs more than anything. In some ways that aspect is particularly ugly because Christians are supposed to be like siblings to each other...and few fights are worse than family feuds.
I don't know what can be done about this other than bringing the problem to light WITHOUT placing blame on anybody. I don't know enough about what's gone on before I got here and even if I did, I think the problem looks more widespread, more systemic than that. I want only to suggest that each of us look at ourselves to try to figure out what we are each doing that could be making it worse, and think what we could do to make it better. I'm not letting myself off the hook either...I will make an effort not to stir things up too much if I can avoid it.
