How do you feel if your newborn baby is deaf?

How do you feel if you newborn baby is deaf? What will you do ? How will you feel? I have been born deaf and my hearing parents accepted me and loved me no matters who I was. Here I am today I will be 50 yrs old. My life just have been fine and my wonderful families I have and we all do signs. I am the only deaf person . I also have 2 adults children .. they signs as well. I thank God for them in my life. I also have wonderful hearing husband for 28 years. I am just a happy person and accepted who I am because God created me of who I am .Any person who are deaf He created them to. Be glad of who you are.:)
 
I felt confused when I found out my baby was deaf. He was 6 months old when we first knew. I didn't know anything about deafness, and the things the doctors and audis were telling me just didn't make a whole lot of sense. So I went to the Deaf Community and asked them to tell me what it was like to be a deaf child, and what they needed as children. As a result, I learned ASL, and exposed him to other Deaf people.
 
Doctor today screen new borns baby for hearing test now and also again at 6 months old so that how I know my baby born hearing. I can also tell she reponse to noise and her name.
 
I'll be so happy!! :D If I have a hearing baby, that's all right, I will have to accpet my baby. That's means I must look for speech thaery (sp) and find a something that my baby may need it.

Well, being parent is not for me. ;)
 
For me, it wouldnt matter. I wouldnt be upset cuz I know that deaf people can lead successful lives.
 
I have 2 deaf sons and I am fine with it. If I were to have hearing children, I would still accept and love them unconditionally. The most important thing is - to have a healthy baby. That's what counts the most.

I agree but there are actually people out there that view deafness as an unhealthy condition, if u can believe that? :ugh3:

Actually, I can believe it. I remember when I took my youngest son to the audiologist for his hearing test at 6 weeks old. The audiologist and I striked up a conversation related to CI, etc. She was telling me about a previous incident just right before my son's appointment. I was appalled at what she was telling me.

She said a couple brought their baby who was like at least 6 weeks old in for a hearing test and the baby turned out to be deaf. The parents were really upset due to it's deafness, so and on. As part of her job, she was recommending some options ie; Hearing Aid, CI, ASL, Speech Therapy, etc. The parents were morbidly desperate and wanted the CI right on the spot! The audiologist office is in the hospital. Imagine that? :eek: I was like "Whoa, Wait a minute, They actually wanted the CI at that exact moment?" She was like "Yes!" I mean, I just couldn't believe it. She had to explain the parents that it takes time and process to ensure the welfare of the infant. She also even recommended them to learn ASL. Sadly enough, the parents shunned out the option for them to learn ASL.
 
what! jo they are in hosp! rme! oh boy that explain why more ci people today than in age! rme! *thug* no wonder i couldnt find a good girl for me! ha! oh well!
 
of course I would be happy if my baby is deaf.. but my son TJ is hearing.. thats ok.. as long as he is healthy thats all i care about... funny he have sensory processing disorder and development delay plus I still think he have Asperger's syndrome. we will have him evaluated again by specialist hopefully soon.

His father and I talked about it few days ago and we both agreed TJ is still having problems. He still cant ride bike as he is SO clumsy?? he still have non-verbal communication skills like.. he only speak about dinsoaurs, transformers, power rangers, snakes and turtles. not broader subjects like kids would talk about? he still spoke in loud voice like Elmo? He still cant make friends and doesnt understand how to make friends? He is still having problems. He have WONDERFUL visual memory. drawing pictures without looking at something? he drew dragonS. wow! unbelivable!

TJ's school said he may still be austitic in some ways. they told me better to have him evaluated again. The last time he was evaluated when he was 2 yrs old so its long overdue.

too bad he is not deaf but thats ok... we both are lot alike... we both have disablity. mother and son.. bond strong forever.. :)

Nothing new...and then who becomes delayed in language development? The child. That's really sad.

wow the parents should go to deaf community and ask questions around and see what the Deaf culture is like and learning sign language. Thats too bad they are ignorant! sigh.
 
If I had a deaf baby.. I would consider it natural just like hearing babies
 
It doesnt matter if I had a deaf or hearing baby as long as they are healthy. My son is hearing and he is learning to sign more Yay!!!

If, I had a new born baby who is deaf ...then, I will have a BIG party to celebrate to welcome this newborn deaf child to this world!!

I would invite friends to share this good news as well. :wiggle:
 
in a way I would be sad knowing that my deaf baby will never fully be able to communicate with my family (other than myself and her sisters) since they never bothered to learn sign language. I also would panic because I know there are very few quality programs available for deaf infants and children. I would have to relocate to find a good early childhood intervention program specifically designed for deaf children.
 
I found out my kids were deaf when they were 1 and 2 years old. and honestly, it didnt phase me at all. I figured that that is just how they are, and we would just learn sign language and love them just the same as if they were hearing. it was never a big deal for us. we were just glad that it was their hearing, not their heart or their brains that werent working the same as ours.
~like i have said before, my kids were born perfect, and being deaf is just how they are.~
If anyone in my family (which sadly is MOST of my family) dosent want to learn ASL to communicate with the boys, well then its really THEIR loss. the boys know who IS and who ISNT going to go that extra mile for them in the long run. so those of us who have gone that distance for them will reap the reward of being closest to them in the end.
 
IF i have children somedays no matter for me whatsoevers which will become deaf or hearing on my children.

IF Doctors or nurse will look on baby's ears after born if real deaf or not they will let parents know.

when im become deaf when i was 10 month old and i never know and my mom took me to doctor's office for check-up but my parents knew it and my parents never hears at me till im become deaf.
 
I'll be upset if the baby is deaf becuz I do not want to get involved with deaf ppl at residential school.
