I have come across a decent 2000 Full sized chevy 4x4, The drive train is excellent, very low mileage.... just has some body damage.... I can deal with the body damage as long as the vehicle is dependable.
Well, the story on this truck breaks my heart, Here goes:
I responded to the ad I was interested in the truck, the gentleman responds that If I am serious and have the cash ( which I am and do ) he will show it and sell it cheap. The truck was pristine, well taken care of and barely driven. Until he had a stroke behind the wheel. He wasn't going fast but dented the front fender slightly and bashed the side of the bed in pretty good... the bed I can replace cheaply off craigslist, the fender I might be able to pop out ( I still need to look at it ) but new tires and everything in excellent shape except the body damage. The gentleman was mis-diagnosed and went into a coma after the accident, and after recovering was given 3 months to live due to a medical condition he now has... I was left speechless, and all I could really say is Im sorry... I will be meeting this stranger tomorrow as well as his wife to buy the truck if its in as good of shape as he says, Ive only seen pictures of it so far. But I feel so sad for a man who has a ticking clock on his life and for his wife who will soon lose someone she so dearly loves. I hope to just stay focused on the truck but I know some people like to talk about their lives and I sometimes feel so awkwards trying to find something to say...
Im sorry to hear that, God Bless You... and yet be so thanksful for a gift ( he is selling cheap to help someone out as he told me ) the truck is values at a lot more but due to the damage he doesn't want to fix the body as we all can understand due to his situation. It just seems so hard to know you don't have much longer in the world and just waiting for your time, it has to be hard on someone emotionally? Yet, I do want him to know how thanksful I am for his kindness.

Give him a firm handshake and look at him right in the eyes and say thank you and wish him the best ... if you feel the need ask his wife if you can contact them and keep in touch ... if he talks about his circumstances he may just need someone to listen to him ... so maybe your kindness toward him and a lending ear may help him with his situation ... sometimes all a person needs is someone to talk to ... death is a very scary and personal thing to face having to come to terms with your own mortality and realize its all about to end ... pardon my french but its scary as hell to be faced with death and can do nothing to stop it ... believe me I know what it's like ... words that keep going through a persons mind is "I don't want to die" ... it can bring a grown man to tears ...

After all, time limits on life span is always just a guess. It's not a definite answer, it's a hypothesis made by a M.D. Maybe he has longer than he thinks. :) Stay positive!

I am meeting him at his shop, he owns a business, not sure what the business is yet but he said once all the crew is there and they get busy he would like to talk to me. He kept asking what kind of work I do for a living, I told him Im disabled but would like to work again if only my pain didn't interfere so much, I gave him bits of what I used to do and that I held supervisor positions in several fields. Im sure his wife is keeping whatever business they have going as she works there as well. So, Im wondering if he is trying to offer me a position/job in a round about way? or just feeling me out to see what kind of person I am ? Anyways, getting closer to time to go meet and look at the truck.

I bet he is wondering why you would want a crushed up truck. Maybe he wants to know you on a friendly level if he is going to give you a bargain. I often give good deals to "friends" that I have in bike business. I can see the same thing here bonding.

If it was me I would have the truck put on a lift to see how it look underneath . If something is too good to be true I am would be careful.

Be careful of what you hear from strangers. I learned that the hard way. I got a story from a son who said his father died suddenly. Felt bad for him and bought him several items and later learned it was all made up.

If it were me, I would just go in and focus on the truck and not the story.

Yeah . I feel the same way. I knew of a woman that dated a guy and he said he cancer and was dying. The woman felt sorry him and she wanted to break up with him but she stay with the guy. Then one day the woman spoke to the guy mother and said something about him having cancer and the mother said her son does NOT cancer. I agree forget about the sad story it could be distraction so the OP will feel so sorry for the seller they'll not borrow to have the truck checked out . After all how could a sweet person like that give you a bum deal???

Well Thanks everyone on your inputs/thoughts and advice. The gentleman called me this morning and said he was feeling too ill to travel so his wife would be there as he said. I got there and looked the truck over well, damage isn't as bad as it really looks as its basically cosmetics ( front fender/headlight/bumper area) and the side of the bed. Nothing to fail inspection except the headlight is busted and windshield has a crack but may not interfere with inspection if Im lucky since the crack is low.
He wanted $1000, I KBB'd the truck and it turns up over $4500 in bad condition. I offered $800 and his wife and I ( with him on the phone ) bartered... we settled on $900. The truck runs so smooth and quiet you think it died when stopping, it has a K&N cold air intake so it rumbles on take-offs... sounds mean as hell from what I can hear of it. I drove it over 30 minutes on the highway at 80mph to get home, no shakes/pulls...nothing, it just runs like a beast it is. It really looks like a new truck and was in an accident, it has been taken well care of, no leaks of any kinds on the underside at all, 4 wheel disc brakes, the whole 9 yards...Im happy with it. Now to fix the minor things and get it leagal, worry about cosmetics later. Brand new tires and diamond plate stainless truck box included.... wow!

I did walk at first, trying to get it down, but I came back and someone else was looking at it.... The lady came to me and asked if I still want it I said yes, she handed me the title and I went to check the VIN#.... the guy looking got pissed and got in his truck and peeled out acting like an ass...cop across the street nailed him....LMAO. Anyways before that the lady told him I was just there, but he didn't want to hear it.... I almost lucked out on a good truck.

Good thing you took it for a long spin. I agree with everyone, even a sweet old lady can be a two timing scammer, luckily in your case, you got what was advertised! :P You know the saying, If any thing's going to happen, it will happen out there.

Looks like a good deal. :)

Only one question; why are there chew marks on the steering wheel? :giggle:

Now you can use a sob story when trying to get deals on replacement parts.:laugh2:

Looks like the tires are worth at least what you paid for the truck.
