Her computer at work got hacked this morning.

what I meant is that the hacker was in process of "hacking" her computer and they were watching it happening. What they should have done is pull the ethernet cable to limit the breach. by pulling the power plug - you will erase the data needed for forensic purpose, thus making their job harder.

yea possibly WOL since according to OP - the computer was shut off.... unless it's just a "Log Off." For security reason - disable WOL in your BIOS setting and disable Remote Assistance feature... update the computer lol

IF NIC is onboard then yes you can disable WOL from BIOS. If network card then no way to disable.

Ohhh.. during hacker was in process of hacking. Yeah. Good idea but what's happen if laptop use wireless then removed battery off and unplug power.

most latest laptops have wifi button... but for older laptops with no wifi button... hmmm you're screwed! take the battery out as fast as you can! :laugh2:

Age do not matter for wifi button or not. I seen 5 years old laptop have Wifi button. My macbook don't have wifi button which it is only 1.5 years old.

My current laptop have wifi button, but sometimes people want a strong connection - pull the plug!

EPIC FAIL! but then..... apple OS is more secured.. i guess that's EPIC WIN! perhaps?

Looks like a registry hack via some viral intrusion since all kinds of unusual activity was being observed. Once the registry is modified, the pc is condemned unless someone with technical experience can undo the mess.

It's looks like backdoor trojans, in old time, they used Windows 95 backdoor called BackOfrice Netbus Trojan to control the computer as mouse moving and etc thru NetBios Port over the wireless.. Wardriver hackers can detecting wireless port and planted a trojan in the vicitim's computer.. I recommend TURN OFF the UPnP on the wireless routers.

Check it out, if your wireless router are secured or not, you can scan the ports on the website at,

Home of Gibson Research Corporation

Except DMZ for VPs. it's doesn't effects on your computers.

Use harder password (mix with nbr and letters) and "Hidden SSID" setting on your router, the wardriver hacker can't access to wireless routers.

Geez sorry to hear about your friend.

Good thing I disable WOL cuz I hate it. My wireless is secured and gotta stay that way. Of course change your password as often as you can.

How Hacker can turn her computer on??, Please explain more clearly!

Know what WOL is it is called WAKE ON LAN meaning whatever comes though Networking it wakes up the PC. It is safer to disable WOL and unplug the Ethernet.

Unplugged the Ethernet is really more of cut off the networking making it unable for hackers to gain entry.

I hope your friend has liability insurance. Compromising patient records is a serious problem. It involves identity theft, credit risk, and HIPAA offenses. All the patients should be notified, and your friend's business should provide free credit report monitoring for each patient.

If you wish a safer networking, get multiple routers, and have wireless networking on separate public IP address which "Physically" separate from your internal networking system.

I hate wireless but I gone ahead because my wife now has MVP, and I got a mini lappy which I used solely to surf the internet, nothing personal on this machine. I had it on its own public IP address, the rest of our computer networking is on other public IP address.

Wireless is not 100% fool proof and is 100% invisible and that is BAD! You can't see if anyone breached it. EVEN if you set up strong security, it can accidently disable without you even knowing it, scary!
