I would like to know if anyone here has either donated or received bone marrow for transplant. I realize that there are privacy issues involved, so I will accept whatever you feel comfortable revealing. For the same reason, I can't give you many details about the situation.

I'm especially interested to know from recipients if you got your marrow from a stranger or from a close relative (no names please), and what is your ethnicity and/or race.

I'm sorry if these questions seem nosy or too personal. I'm not asking for just "curiousity" reasons. This is a serious request.

I didn't donate or anything, but I do experience the bone replacement on my finger on the left from the motorcycle accident when I was 4 years old. The bone that replace my finger comes from my hip bone. I wasn't happy at all, my finger on my left still does not look normal and have visible scar on my finger, also I can feel the broken bone on my hip, and it makes me feel funny when putting my hand on it.

If you want to know more about the accident, then ask me, I would type whole the story :) Even I don't mind to post the pictures!

Yes, I had bone marrow that was drawn from my hip bone then inserted into my neck cervical vertebra during my surgery last October. It worked very well.

Very interesting. I'm glad that it worked well for you.

Since it was your own marrow, I guess rejection was not a problem?

Correct! It was my own marrow and that was not a problem. It was new to me at that time.

I don't (and never will) qualify to donate marrow, although I strongly wanted to. For those of you that aren't on the registry, I'd really support you making that choice. 2 days of you feeling a little hip pain can mean the difference between life and death for someone else.

My bone in my finger at left hand is from my hip bone too and it do works, I agree with you.

I'm never to donate or receive the bone marrow.

No. I tried to donate blood once but they weren't interested. Maybe because I was on tegretol at the time. I don't take it any more. Only liquid thyroxine. So I'm wondering about trying again.

What is the criteria as to wether your blood/or bone marrow is accepted or not?

I wouldn't mind to donate my bone marrow if match. I like to help and see someone get better. Even for my own kid too. *knock on the wood*

I never donate any yet. I don't know if I know anyone done it.

Donate Your Baby's Umbilical Cord Blood

Your baby's umbilical cord blood could give hope to a patient with leukemia, aplastic anemia or other blood diseases. The blood-forming cells found in cord blood are being studied under research protocols as a new method for treating patients in need.

* Each year thousands of patients are diagnosed with life-threatening diseases that can be treated by rebuilding the patient's hematopoietic (blood cell producing) system with blood-forming cells. Umbilical cord blood is being studied as one of the sources of blood cells.
* Donating cord blood is medically safe. The cord blood is collected from the umbilical cord after your baby is born.
* Donation does not change the birth process.
* The umbilical cord and placenta are usually thrown away after a baby is born.
* Donating cord blood is free to you and completely confidential.

Did you donate to a family member, or to a stranger? Was it for leukemia?
