Have anyone here work overnight?

I'll do that possibly tomorrow, but more likely on saturday late am or afternoon until sunday 7am because the rumor that the legislature will be adjourining on sunday @ 7:00 AM. My boss and I will have backup person for overnight so three of us will have to take turns to keep the store open. My boss have contract with the state, it says that we have to be open during legislative session (it means House of Representatives and Senate floor session), can't close early even if we want to go home..... I noticed that old owner/boss close the store early too often, so that's why he moved to other building (he's nearly blind). Hopefully we don't go into special session like last summer that caused the state government to be shut down for 8 days. Soon as we adjourn sine die, we will go out and celebate "end of session". On sunday I will catch up on sleep since I'll have to be up all night. Well, that's life...

I thought they are closed on Saturdays and Sundays and are only open Monday through Friday. I can understand where some government places have to be open 24 hours but the legislative and senate chambers should be closed on Saturdays and Sundays unless there is an emergency at the state or the national level. It seems from what you are saying you run the gift shop or a store open and why would a boss enter into a contract that you gotta be there on Saturdays and Sundays when the politicans are home with their families ? It should be just the guards and military personnel guarding the building. The gift shop would obivously be closed on Saturday and Sundays.

Advice : If you have to stay up all night then do not eat a big meal all at once. This will make you want to go to sleep. Break your meals into small portions over the space of your working hours to keep your enegry levels running smoothly even when you are awake. Drink water, that will keep you awake better than coffee.

I've done that a couple of times for inventory when I worked at Blockbuster Video.

Heath, state lawmakers, media staff, state police staff, lobbyists and some people will be needing some snack and beverages that they are working on special bills. That goes to Congress on Capital Hill, too. You never know but the snack vendors are making more profits. I am sure that good ADer will also obtain a bonus and free Red Bull....

Mookie is right... Heath, it is not gift shop, its snack shop... I have posted about my job somewhere few months ago. Mookie got right answers about who are customers. As for State Police, we call them State Patrol, State Troopers. One of my best friend/dad is Legislative Security Officer (LSO, it is retired troopers who take care of security when legislature is in session in addtion to few troopers).

If we close, those people will get so cranky!!!!!

This is regular legislative session not special session, so they work only on regular session bills. We hope we don't have special session.

My boss work for a vending company that have contract with a state agency under Business Enterprise Program (BEP).

I've worked 3rd shift before and I do love working graveyards. But I've been doing 2nd shift (afternoon to night) for the past 10 years since I first joined the company Im now working for.

Day shift aint my cup of tea though ....

I have done it before many, many moons ago. It isn't too bad but it does play havoc with your sleep cycle. Would I do it again...not if I can help it and it won't given what I do.

my fiance worked the graveyard shifts.. i can tell it wreck havoc with his sleep cycles as he is forgetting many things.. on weekend when he have kids over to sleep the weekends with him .. especially on sat.. he hve to stay up till 8 pm or so.. then finally sleep.. now he have high blood pressure? its not good for his health.. i told him its better to change shifts so will not wreck havoc with his lifestyles if he keep up with this. jeez.

That is why I said I am never taking a 3rd shift job ever again, not if I can help it.

Heath,

If you're going to become a police officer like you said, guess who's at the bottom of the totem pole in seniority? You are! That means you get all the crummy shifts, rotating shifts and odd hours. You won't have a choice. As for holidays and Sundays, count on working them, crime doesn't take time off because the police are in church or it's a holiday. If you're hoping for a Monday through Friday work, forget about it. Graveyard shift . . . count on many, many of them through the years, not to mention being called in the middle of deep sleep to get on duty due to an emergency. Just like a doctor . . . any and all shifts available, you will work them.

Racheleggert,

I think the word, "cranky," is an understatement! Wait until a special session is called. If I may say, so many of our legislators are long overdue to be replaced with fresh blood, which is why I encourage you to run for office.

For the others, you people should have seen the behavior of these "public servants" when Jesse Ventura was governor. He did an outstanding job, but these jerks at the capitol couldn't do their job even if their lives depended on it.

Yes, I know and I have not decided what I want to study in college yet. That one is certainly an option but I am looking at all the options for a job. If I was doing it for better pay and not like for $5.00 an hour on 3rd shift then I would not mind so much.

That is because Jesse Ventura maintained a high state of physical fitness even after he got out of the U.S. Navy Seals then out of WWF so he was in much , much better physical shape than these guys who were starting to gray and live in their old age on the job which is fine but yes some physical fitness is also needed to be able to stay awake all night, your body really wheter you are in superb physical fitness or you are overweight or very thin, your body still needs sleep at night time during normal sleeping hours no matter what age you may be. By the way, I did not always agree with Jesse Ventura and there were some things that he embarrassed himself on that I went huh ? I think he could have made a good governor if he was more focused on the job. I am not sure if he was Republican or a Democract though. That was a long time ago. I don't think he is the governor there anymore. I think a new governor was voted and sworn in during election year a couple years ago ?

I found out I'll be working 2pm tomorrow....

As for jesse ventura, he isn't governor anymore, and he is an indepdent. Now we have tim pawlenty as governor, a republican.
