When I have to comfort one of the many Grammar Nazi's on here, I just softly say "There, Their, They're"

I'm a grammar nazi.

I'm usually picky about grammar and spelling. It makes me cringe from time to time whenever I see someone use the wrong grammar or spelling in something.

Even hearing people get these wrong... there, their, & they're... your & you're... it's & its... then & than... a lot (they say alot)... affect & effect... weird (they say wierd)... etc.

I see this all the time when I sign on Facebook.

I see those same ones all the time. For some of these words, it is a phonetic issue, I think. (In that they sound the same so some people don't take the time to understand their meanings and use them correctly.)

I have to be more diligent when typing at a computer that uses autofill. It makes some weird choices. :giggle:

oops then reading my posts must make you cringe

Hahaha... not really.

It usually makes me cringe if it's coming from a person or source that is expected to do it correctly.

If it's a person who acts superior and smarter, then I would roll my eyes whenever he messes up. For instance, a hearing guy talking about how he's better than deaf people and that deaf people can't do their grammar/spelling right... but then he says something with the wrong grammar/spelling.

If it's a source that's supposed to do look "good", then I would roll my eyes at them when they mess up. For instance, I go to the mall and see a poster advertising a business. On that poster, there's a spelling or grammar error. ;)

I still find myself looking for grammartical errors (is that spelled right?) ....(perhaps isn't even a word :giggle:)...so better ask Botti....since at times I was asked to proof read on my job.....

Honestly, other than Daredevil correcting me on some things, I don't see it so much on these forums. On this site, posters are much more understanding than on the hearing sites. And, on dating sites it can mean the difference between being flamed or having your message deleted.

Still, I do try to improve keep my writing skills, but I have to admit they could be a lot better. Online, your audience can't read your body language so you need to be as clear as possible.

There are times when I wonder why people even bother doing it worse than before when it comes to online comments.

I sometimes use online abreviations like BRB, LOL, WTF, etc because it's quicker and easier. When it comes to long comments and e-mails, then I type more seriously.

The ones I'm referring to are people who speak in a manner that involves more work to make your writing look worse than normal.

And no matter how many times someone has told me ...."the e before the i"...I still get it mixed-up...as in "their and thier".....

I before E, except after C, or when sounding like (long) "A" as in neighbor or weigh.

Ah, so that's the exceptions. I always said "except after C and other times." :giggle:

Doubt this old brain will remember that though...

You mean, "I before E, except after C"?

That's the rule I learned while watching a Charlie Brown movie.

It applies to a lot of words, but there are too many exception rules that goes along with it... that it becomes confusing. :(

That rule applies to chief, fierce, blieve, friend, etc.

Then it also applies to receive, deceive, receipt, ceiling, etc.

However, it doesn't apply to weird, foreign, seize... or science, species, etc.

I guess it's a good rule for those learning their spelling as little kids with limited vocabulary, but as their (See? Even "their" is an exception!) vocabulary expands... that rule begins to fade away.
