GM bankrutcy today 6/1/2009...what you think?

Oh yes! The parts, generally cheap, plus won't have trouble finding for most years of Wranglers, even 50's til now you still can get parts. If you need a new frame for 1950 Jeep Willy? No problem! Whats more, there are plenty of Jeep groups out there than you realize.

I had to replace my brake caliper after serious off roading with mud bath, it got locked... I was shocked to find out that the caliper cost me only 20 dollars, so I had no problem replacing them.

Jeep is very good and easy to repair. I already take transmission and transfer case out from Jeep Wrangle. It's pretty easy and simple. Don't need to take wheels off.

Mostly FWD must take wheels off for remove the transmission.

Hmm that reminds me, I saw a really old green Jeep with no windshield and he was driving it on the highway without a windshield, isn't that illegal?

If that driver didn't have eye protection, then it is illegal. Yes Jeep CJ up to 2006 TJ has removable windshield. I am not sure about 2007 to present, they have removed the hinge from the body to the windshield.

The doors can be removed if owner desires

Hmmm interesting

That Chevy Cobalt I rented from Enterprise few years ago gets unimpressive mpg compared to my Honda Civic, it's sad. I guess it's goodbye to GM if they don't get their act up.

You means that Chevy Cobalt has less gas mpg than Honda Civic?

It would be true because Cobalt got 30-34 mpg since Civic got 35-40 mpg.

Civic doesn't make up to 40 mpg in highway enough anymore.

General Motors enters bankruptcy

American car giant General Motors on Monday filed for bankruptcy protection in a move that will see the US government take a 60 percent stake in the company and the likely loss of 20,000 US jobs.

Backed by the US government, the move marks the biggest industrial collapse in America and the bankruptcy filing is the third-largest in US history.

GM is now the second of the "Big Three" US carmakers to enter bankruptcy protection, following Chrysler's lead.

GM's bankruptcy is expected to be legally complicated, in particular because of the company's international reach, which includes German subsidiary Opel and the UK's Vauxhall brand.

Vauxhall and Opel are in the process of being sold off to Canadian-Austrian auto parts manufacturer Magna and a Russian partner, with the aid of the German government.

Only GM's US brands were included in Monday's bankruptcy filing.

The US government is expected to take a 60 percent stake in the carmaker which has struggled with years of heavy losses. Washington will also pump in an additional $30 billion (21 billion euros) to help restructure the 100-year-old automaker.

Canada's government will also contribute another $10 billion and take a 12-percent stake in GM

GM, which had already received $20 billion of emergency loans since the end of last year, said in its bankruptcy filing that its current debts total $173 billion.

"Tough but fair move"

US President Barack Obama said on Monday he was confident General Motors Corp would emerge quickly from bankruptcy, saying the government is in a reluctant position as a controlling shareholder and that he had no interest in running the company.

"I am absolutely confident that if well managed, a new GM will emerge that can ... out-compete automakers around the world and that can once again be an integral part of America's economic future," Obama said in remarks at the White House.

President Barack Obama described the move as "tough" but said it was "also fair" and added it would "give this iconic American company a chance to rise again."

The president also promised a hands-off approach, saying the carmaker -- and not his administration -- would be responsible for decisions on the day-to-day running of the company.

"A new chapter"

GM chief executive Fritz Henderson called it a "difficult but very important day" and appealed to customers to "give us another chance." He promised a speedy bankruptcy process that will allow the carmaker to take the necessary steps to reinvent itself.

"We'll do it right and we will do it once," Henderson said at a press conference. "This is not the end of General Motors but the start of a new chapter."

It is expected that GM may be able to exit bankruptcy protection in between 60 and 90 days.

On the same day that GM filed for bankruptcy, a bankruptcy judge approved the sale of Chrysler's best assets into a new company to be managed by Italian carmaker Fiat.

"A sacrifice for the next generation"

The restructuring is expected to produce a drastically leaner GM. Some 20,000 US workers are thought likely to lose their jobs as the firm streamlines its operations. It currently has 173,000 employees across the US, Canada and Mexico.

GM also plans to close three service and parts operations.

President Obama made an appeal to workers who are set to lose their jobs.

"I know you've already seen more than your fair share of hard times," he said. "I want you to know that what you're doing is making a sacrifice for the next generation -- a sacrifice you may not have chosen to make, but a sacrifice that you are nevertheless called to make so that your children and all of our children can grow up in an America that still makes things."

As part of its restructuring, GM would establish the Voluntary Employee Benefits Association (VEBA), a trust that would provide health care benefits for retired workers of United Auto Workers union. In return the VEBA trust would receive 17.5 percent of the restructured GM's equity and will have the right to buy a further two and a half percent.

You means that Chevy Cobalt has less gas mpg than Honda Civic?

It would be true because Cobalt got 30-34 mpg since Civic got 35-40 mpg.

The mpg computer on the Chevy Cobalt said about 27 mpg and my Honda Civic gets about at least 30-31 mpg average. The gas guage goes down a little faster than my Civic, too.

Soon, we will be seeing Hummer vehicles stamped with "Made in China!"!

Doubts Over GM's Hummer Sale To China - Forbes.com

Yeah I heard about that Hummer being sold to the Chinese. Ouch. Arnold Schwarzenegger's not gonna like that, I guarantee. The Chinese got pieces of MG and Rover when Rover went bankrupt in England. BMW just only kept Mini and sold Range Rover to Ford (and Ford sold BOTH Jaguar and Range Rover to Tata of India)

I'm feeling that Koenigsegg (builders of the CC8S that held the top speed record before the Bugatti Veyron broke it) is gonna buy Saab. Saturn I better hope some American company got the both $ AND the balls to buy the Saturn brand.

The GM of today is just badly managed that made GM's founder, William Crapo "Billy" Durant look like a saint even though he lost control of GM TWICE!

ROFL I dont trust the MPG computer. What I do is every time I gas up my SUV, I divide the gallons of gas I pumped into it by the mileage that is on the trip A odometer in the SUV. and I can even tell I did oftentimes exceed the EPA mpg measurments by about 2 or 3 miles. Funny is my mixed mileage on the ZX2 Escort was 40 mpg that exceeded the EPA 31 mpg highway measurement rofl.

I always reset my trip odometer every time I put gas in any car I had. Plus doing the math gives me a rough estimate of the mpg my truck can do in the REAL world.

Yea, Im concern about the fate of Jeep, hopefully Chrysler keeps it, otherwise I would be fine if sold to American investor/company because Jeep has legency and history with America... Don't you know Jeep had help won WWII. It would be insult to Americans if ever Jeep sold overseas. I don't care about Hummers

LMAO the Cobalt XFE edition can get 37 mpg than the regular Cobalt....

That is if u order a 2.2 litre with a 5 speed manual tranny. Automatic LS-1LS and LT-1LT's Cobalts get 33 mpg though.

2009 Chevy Cobalt | Two-Door Coupe | Chevrolet

Even Chevy sells Tahoe XFE editions with better fuel economy too. Both the Tahoe Hybrids and XFE with its 5.3 litre V8-6-4 motor will beat the Toyota Sequoia and Ford Expedition when it comes to saving gas.

American innovation aint dead yet! I'd gladly trade both my Ford and Isuzu for any Chevy XFE editions esp if they can drink E85 alcohol (and I know the mpg is shit with E85 ethanol anyways) or even better if they got stickshifts :)

The GM bankruptcy concerns me about my MIL. She is an elderly disabled widow, and she lives on the retirement pension of her late husband, a GM employee. That is her main source of income and medical benefits. If she loses those, she will be in a world of hurt.

I'm sure there are many other retirees in the same boat. They thought they had a secure retirement, and then....

It seems like Chevy don't make any speed that same as advertised.

Or you maybe drive so too fast, just messing.

I'm really doubt that American SUV will get manual transmission since it stopped in 2000's because of heavy stuff, I believe so.

Only crossover could have manual or not.

I'm not manual transmission user.

Jeep survived AMC sale to Chrysler, so it should survive this latest debacle.

BTW, my '95 Cherokee was built in Mexico. Not sure where Hubby's Commander was built.
