Conservatives Pick Soft Target: A Cartoon Sponge
By DAVID D. KIRKPATRICK

WASHINGTON, Jan. 19 - On the heels of electoral victories barring same-sex marriage, some influential conservative Christian groups are turning their attention to a new target: the cartoon character SpongeBob SquarePants.

"Does anybody here know SpongeBob?" Dr. James C. Dobson, the founder of Focus on the Family, asked the guests Tuesday night at a black-tie dinner for members of Congress and political allies to celebrate the election results.

SpongeBob needed no introduction. In addition to his popularity among children, who watch his cartoon show, he has become a well-known camp figure among adult gay men, perhaps because he holds hands with his animated sidekick Patrick and likes to watch the imaginary television show "The Adventures of Mermaid Man and Barnacle Boy."

Now, Dr. Dobson said, SpongeBob's creators had enlisted him in a "pro-homosexual video," in which he appeared alongside children's television colleagues like Barney and Jimmy Neutron, among many others. The makers of the video, he said, planned to mail it to thousands of elementary schools to promote a "tolerance pledge" that includes tolerance for differences of "sexual identity."

The video's creator, Nile Rodgers, who wrote the disco hit "We Are Family," said Mr. Dobson's objection stemmed from a misunderstanding. Mr. Rodgers said he founded the We Are Family Foundation after the Sept. 11 attacks to create a music video to teach children about multiculturalism. The video has appeared on television networks, and nothing in it or its accompanying materials refers to sexual identity. The pledge, borrowed from the Southern Poverty Law Center, is not mentioned on the video and is available only on the group's Web site.

Mr. Rodgers suggested that Dr. Dobson and the American Family Association, the conservative Christian group that first sounded the alarm, might have been confused because of an unrelated Web site belonging to another group called "We Are Family," which supports gay youth.

"The fact that some people may be upset with each other peoples' lifestyles, that is O.K.," Mr. Rodgers said. "We are just talking about respect."

Mark Barondess, the foundation's lawyer, said the critics "need medication."

On Wednesday however, Paul Batura, assistant to Mr. Dobson at Focus on the Family, said the group stood by its accusation.

"We see the video as an insidious means by which the organization is manipulating and potentially brainwashing kids," he said. "It is a classic bait and switch."

Boy, these religious fanatics will do anything to prove things wrong.

This reminds me of a time when I worked at Blockbuster Video. There was this one customer who came in screaming at me and demanding that I remove a movie from the shelf. This movie was Hocus Pocus. She said that it teaches children witchcraft and should not even be in the store in the first place. Just to shut her up, I put it behind the counter and waved at her as she left. After she left, I put it back out on the shelf. ;)

WTG Vampy!!!

Sometimes, you just gotta do whatcha gotta do. To each his own, but I have no patience for this sort of thing, myself.

:pissed: at this sort of thing!!!

Oh boy, and they said that Shark Tales promoted homosexuality because a shark in it was a vegetarian who was afraid to come out of the closet to his father because all of the sharks eat meat, ya know.

Well, I can see where they'll get that idea. But still...

The same thing applies to Finding Nemo when the two fishes found a group of sharks. Heh!

Well, Jordan loves SpongeBob, and I don't care what those people say about it.

It's just a kiddie show. In no way do my kids question homosexuality after watching an episode of SpongeBob. I personally don't like him, or the Teletubbies either, but that's because I'm not a kid. LOL.

Kids don't have these kind of ideas at that age. It isn't until they go to school that they end up with all sorts of fucked-up images of what's
"right" or "wrong." In my opinion, that is where curiosity begins. From their friends, not kiddie shows.

Captain: Are you ready kids?
Kids: Aye-aye Captain.
Captain: I can't hear you...
Kids: Aye-Aye Captain!!
Captain: Oh! Who lives in a pineapple under the sea?
Kids: SpongeBob SquarePants!
Captain: Absorbent and yellow and porous is he!
Kids: SpongeBob SquarePants!
Captain: If nautical nonsense be something you wish...
Kids: SpongeBob SquarePants!
Captain: Then drop on the deck and flop like a fish!
Kids: SpongeBob SquarePants!
Captain: Ready?
EveryBody: SpongeBob SquarePants! SpongeBob SquarePants! SpongeBob SquarePants!
Captain: SpongeBob.... SquarePants! Haha.

Yep. But again, religious fanatics tend to end up make themselves more fool than they already are.

I've seen some who take traditions too far. I once had a couple of friends who were forced to stay home on Halloween. Their mom didn't believe in Halloween so she felt it was pointless and against her religion for her kids to go out trick-or-treating...

It’s a homo conspiracy, folks! We’ve got to do something about this right now, before it’s too late! Thank the sweet Lord that that we have sensible, right thinking, conservative Americans like James Dobson and George W. Bush to shine that guiding beacon of wisdom into the dark abyss of our own ignorance! We have to remove all of these homosexual icons from our television airwaves immediately!!! First the Teletubbies, and then we need to get rid of Bert and Ernie. After that, Batman and Robin, SpongeBob, and those goddamn lesbian Olsen twins! Not to mention Mr. Rogers and Captain Kangaroo! How could we have been so BLIND as to not see the obvious homoeroticism portrayed by these two effeminate, swishy girly men? We have to act now before it’s too late. The day will come when your son starts skipping to school and trying out for the cheerleading squad, and your daughter starts putting up posters of Gloria Allred and Chastity Bono above her bed. And when that day comes, you will KNOW that it is TOO LATE to do anything about it—the wheels are already in motion and the downfall of western civilization is at hand! But we can act right now, folks! Call your Congressman, write to your state Senator, and above all GET OUT YOUR SHOTGUNS!!! We will not be defeated by the homo alliance!!! God is on our side, and victory over the dark forces of homosexuality shall be ours!!!

Be honest—do you REALLY want these two men to be playing with your children?

The scary thing is that about 10% of the people who read my post are not going to recognize it as satire, and will respond with :werd: or :gpost: or something equally idiotic.

Well, I’m sure there are a LOT of guys out there who would give their left arm for a 3-way with the Olsen sisters. Hmmm…damn…if I wasn’t old enough to be their father…

I think Mayflower would have something to say about that, Mr. Chimp.

Not to mention, I don't think I'd want to see Mary-Kate without her clothes on. At least, not until she got some meat on 'dem bones. She's so thin that it's disgusting.

Ocean, how can you say such a thing? I’m deeply hurt by your insinuation. :( I adore Mayflower, and I would never do anything which would make her feel left out or neglected. She’s more than welcome to hold the camcorder...
