Fifth-Grader Dies After Hit-And-Run Crash - Connecticut News Story - WFSB Hartford
NEW HAVEN, Conn. -- New Haven officials said an 11-year-old city girl has died after a hit-and-run crash.
Police said two cars may have been racing when the girl was hit Wednesday night on Whalley Avenue.
One witness described the crash as being the result of "drag racing."
The girl, identified as fifth-grader Gabrielle Lee, of New Haven, was transported to Yale-New Haven Hospital, where she died early Thursday morning, officials said.
Police said Gabrielle was en route to a Laundromat around 9:30 p.m. with her family when she was hit.
"Her brother was with her," said witness John Elliot. "She went up in the air and came down."
Gabrielle was a student at the Elm City Prep School. Grief counselors from the Yale Child Study Center were at the school on Thursday to assist students.
Police said the front grill of a car was recovered at the scene, allowing investigators to narrow the vehicle involved to a 1999 - 2005 dark Volkswagen Jetta.
Anyone with information regarding the investigation is urged to contact the New Haven Police Department by dialing 203-946-8584 or 203-946-6304
