Explain this thought process, please.

It really annoys me when people assume republicans = conservatives and democrats = liberals.

It is SO telling whenever someone makes that reference.

Kinda like how someone says communism = socialism.

Because it seems to me if people don't have sworn die-hard party loyalty, politicians could jump ships without anyone noticing.

Absolutely. And it isn't even so much party loyalty, as it is the categorization they use to identify the party (short cut to thinking; hueristic). See Republican, think Conservative. See Democrat, think Liberal. For some conservation = bad and for some liberal = bad. Therefore, they discount a political position or policy based on that heuristic. E.G Repub = conservative = bad = I am against it. Very dangerous way to make political decisions. Generally, you are not even certain whether what you are voting against actually is in agreement with your goals.

It's not really that...

It seems to me from an outsider's perspective, both parties are relatively the same. Yes, we can argue about the finer points, but come on, if you are going to lower yourself to that sort of bickering, obviously you're not stepping back and looking at the bigger picture.

Most of the elections are based on the emotion-gripping issues, not the actual policy. It seems to me Obama could be anti-gay and Bush could easy be pro-gay and it wouldn't make a difference other than who is more likely to be voted in based on the "hot issues."

Am I the only one who doesn't consider Republicans as conservatives, nor Democrats as liberals?

Some Conservative leaning Democrats won too :) I made no such association

Well, many conservative democrats, known as blue dog lost to republicans in recent election last week.

Jillo, you should read this article:

"Political scientist Dr David Runciman gives his view on why there is often such deep opposition to reforms that appear to be of obvious benefit to voters.

Last year, in a series of "town-hall meetings" across the country, Americans got the chance to debate President Obama's proposed healthcare reforms.

What happened was an explosion of rage and barely suppressed violence.

Polling evidence suggests that the numbers who think the reforms go too far are nearly matched by those who think they do not go far enough.

But it is striking that the people who most dislike the whole idea of healthcare reform - the ones who think it is socialist, godless, a step on the road to a police state - are often the ones it seems designed to help.

In Texas, where barely two-thirds of the population have full health insurance and over a fifth of all children have no cover at all, opposition to the legislation is currently running at 87%."

BBC News - Why do people vote against their own interests?

Remember, they are NOT capable of reasoning and understanding facts. They're more persuaded by personal stories, not facts.

And they're only persuaded by stories that confirm their bias.

Yeah. I know a few liberal Republicans and conservative democrats. I even can name some libertarian leaning Democrats though they're not as common as the Republican kind.

Nobody seems to mind our bloated military budget which takes over half our money. Cut that in half and we will be fine.

and discontinue the drug war. and increase more tariffs.

I'm all for cutting out the waste, fraud, and abuse that goes on in the military. I'm not for depriving our military of things that they need.

well...
It isn't a matter of money. It isn't a matter on the part of the army of desire. It's a matter of production and capability of doing it. As you know, ah, you go to war with the army you have, not the army you might want or wish to have at a later time. You can have all the armor in the world on a tank and it can (still) be blown up.

Better tracking of inventories, cutting out bureaucratic layers, more care in handing out contracts, hammering those who commit fraud with harsher penalties, for starters. Tighter enlistment requirements would cut down on time and money wasted on people who will never make it to the field.

The end effects would be less taxpayer money wasted and more efficiency.

Thank you.:ty: I think you see what I am talking about when I started this thread. People really don't understand what would suit their goals and what wouldn't because they base their vote decision on the surface appearance.

kinda funny that what I just said there was a conversation stopper :giggle:

No, it's not. Obamacare is about taking away choice from consumers.

Waste, fraud, and abuse in health care can be addressed without implementing Obamacare.

Please explain to me exactly how Obamacare takes away choice. Choice for what?
