Eustachian Tubes

My Doctor told me that he thinks my deafness could be caused by my Eustachian tubes collapsing, but he didnt send me for any scans or tests to see if they had collapsed. Can anyone tell me whether a MRI or Scan of some sort would show this? Are MRIs any use for identifying hearing problems caused by physical problems?

You have fluids in your ears causing the deafness?

Eustachian tubes are for draining the ears.
 
No, not fluied. The Dr says that the tubes may have collapsed, and that may be casuing the deafness. But he hasnt asked for any investigation to estgablish if that is the case, just given me a hearing aid that isnt doing much good. And my question is whether a scan would be able to show that.

Yes and no. I would ask people if they have had an experience with it in the past.

And don't we happen to have a couple medical people on board here?

We do have some "equips" here on board. :) (People with experience, and medical people as well)
 
Thanks, Posts from Hell. A reply from a medical person would be ideal, but as you say there are plenty of people on these boards with experience of their own who might know (and indeed I thought that one of the purposes of these boards was to share experiences).
 
So the drum part is damaged? I think there is a surgery for that. Go to your Ear Nose Throat who specialize Cochlear Implant. There is a another device for people who have Middle ear damage and not the cochlear.
 
It's good to share experiences, yes. But for an exact diagnosis of your specific problem, only a doctor can do that. Each person's medical situation is unique. What works for one person won't necessarily work for another.
 
I am hearing and I had a severe sinus infection in December that first, clogged then the swelling temporarily closed my Eustachian Tube of my right ear. Not only could I not hear in the ear, my balance was shot too. I can easily say that it can be really serious issue and you should go and have a second opinion with an ENT (Ear, Nose & Throat) specialist. If anything you will have more options.

It sounds like your doctor is a GP and if that is true, ask him to refer you to an ENT specialist within if there are any. The sooner the better.

I am not in an ITP as of yet. I should be getting into one in the fall of this year. But I have a much better appreciation now that I have gone through it. I can honestly say I was HOH for a short period of time.
