Women who have been colouring their hair for over 25 years have a higher risk of developing non-Hodgkin lymphoma, US researchers reported.

They said their study of 1300 women could help explain a mysterious rise in the number of cases of the cancer, which affects the lymphatic system.

Writing in the American Journal of Epidemiology, researchers said women who began dying their hair before 1980 were one-third more likely to develop non-Hodgkin lymphoma (NHL), and those who had used the darkest dyes were twice as likely to develop the cancer.

"Women who used darker permanent hair colouring products for more than 25 years showed the highest increased risk," Tongzhang Zheng, associate professor of epidemiology and environmental health at Yale School of Medicine, said in a satement.

Cancer experts note that a person's absolute risk of developing lymphoma is very low, so doubling that risk still means a woman who dyes her hair is very unlikely to develop lymphoma.

Non-Hodgkin's lymphoma will affect about 54,000 Americans this year and kill 19,000, according to the American Cancer Society.

Each year about 3500 Australians are diagnosed with the disease.

In 2001, 969 Victorians were diagnosed with the disease, while 404 died from the condition.

The incidence of NHL had soubled since the mid-1970s and no-one knows why. Experts suspect exposure to chemicals can be a factor. The lymphatic system is part of the immune system, so people with immune weaknesses are at special risk - notably AIDS and organ transplant patients.

I've been dying my hair for the last 8 years. I probably won't stop any time soon, my natural hair is dull and lifeless.
I sure hope that they at least try to rectify the problem.

Is beauty worth the risk? I don't know.

What is your real hair color? Why don't you leave it alone for now just to see what happens?

Was it bleach that you used? When you have dark hair color and you use bleach to make it lighter, it will become blonde. However, if you leave the bleach in your hair for too short amount of time... it won't become blonde, just orange. I've had that happen to me once cuz I washed out the bleach too soon.

oh really? COOL~ [is thinking about bleaching her hair to get that orange color effect] WAIT, i have to have dark hair? ... HOW DARK? Because I have all colors in the spectrum between light blonde to light brunette.

Dyed my hair "Midnight Blue" more like very black 10 years ago. Oh my, cause my hair pretty damaged and fall down. Forced shaved it off for start over. Refuse dye dark color ever again.

About bleach and blond dye, I used sometime since I was 15 years old during my freshman year. Turned out no problem at all. Better stop doing for like more than 2 years now.

Wish I know my mother's secret for keep her hair stay healthy after dye blond for 34 years. She still doing. That's amaze.

Right now, I leave my natural color hair alone. Even included gray hair. Won't hurt me after get new gray hair daily. Because of part of family genes. Cannot help it. Not embarrass to having gray hair. Just think positive.

If you have light-colored hair like dirty blonde, bleaching it completely will make it very bright. If you have light brown hair, bleaching it a little makes it orange and a lot makes it blonde. If you have dark brown hair, bleaching it a bit makes it weird orange...

Black hair gets all weird when bleached. I can't exactly put it in words.

Orange, (I bought 2 shade lighter blonder), it turn out ORANGE!! I look like Fergie's flaming red hair! I bought brown dye hair to get it back, and boy it hurt my hair for too many washes!!

I once dyed it blond but it don't suit me! I dyed it brown to keep me young! (My daughters are giving me hard time if I have a grey hair!) :slap:

My real hair color is medium brown. I left it alone when I was pregnant with my girls.

To be honest I used to change my "look" quite often (every 6-9 months). I get bored easily. So far I think I've had every hair color in the book, bleached blond, strawberry blond, dirty blond, Auburn, dark brunette, black, multicolor highlights, etc. Along with the color, my hair style, clothes, and makeup changed. My husband doesn't seem to mind, plenty of variety.

That's better than most gals I know who end up shaving their hair too frequently. In fact, I think that shaving their hair has become an addiction. I've seen them say, "I've got a strong urge to shave it all off! Argh!"

Really? I don't know if I could ever shave my head. I have naturally curly hair, and if I shaved it, ohhh I could just imagine how awful it would look when it starts to grow back.

Whoa... don't shave it!

My hair is curly, but I've tamed it almost straight. I also have thick hair so I tend to get it cut really short. Now, it looks like it's straight and it grows forward to the front.

What is wrong with the shaven cueball?

I used to think about shaving my hair off and let it growing out to get that cute super-short hairdo (then I can clip on a cute retro bow- har har, super-short hair doesn't need any barettes!) but then I realized that if I shave my hair off, people would be blinded by my white scalp! Oh well.

:gives: If you think it is cool to shave your head off, kudos for ya. I know a gal who shaved her curly hair off just because a bird pooped in her hair  and she just permed her hair (to make it curly even MORE) the day before it so she couldn't wash it out... so she just decided to fuck it and shaved it off. She said that she finally realized how horrible her hairdo was after she finally grew it out for 2 years and she looked back. She thought it was SO cool of her. :smoking:

Dying

Shoot, Ive had to shave my hair three times...lolz. That dye job - we still dont know what happened...My hair is honey blonde and I was trying to go a little lighter for a play...and it just turned orange...jayzuz.

Oh well.

We'll see what happens next time. Maybe it will come out perfect, or I'll be shaving a 4th time!

Love,
