District tells hearing-impaired girl to stop using sign language on bus

Hmmmm, who in the heck was this student signing to, then? But I agree with the parents that this is absurd IF it is the whole story.

That's weird.......Wasn't there another case like this a few years ago?
On the upside.....it's AWESOME that the girl is postlingally dhh, but still is learning ASL! I really do think that more posties and hoh kids should learn sign.....Like they might not need to go to a school for the Deaf, or have a 'terp in class, but they could take classes or do social group dhh things....sort of like the way Christian kids take CCD, even if they don't go to a Christian school.

Uhh... how the hell does signing cause disturbance on a school bus!?

Signing doesn't even cause a disturbance in the Force! ;)

There has to be more to this story or these people are just plainly dumb.

I believe this is the same case. I noticed the date on this story is April 19, 2001.

*d'oh......they said I was mildly affected! ....So why has this been brought up again and reposted?

 Oh this has to be one of the most absurd stories I have ever heard!!! But, it's ok for hearing students to be screaming and yelling on the bus, and that isn't a major distraction for the bus driver? But, a 12 year old girl who is deaf and her only source of communication is sign language, gets a warning that she will be suspended if she doesn't stop signing? How can signing be a distraction, that is a silent, cultural language. But, like Banjo said, there has to be more to this story.

You're right... this is the same case from a few years ago. If you check the date, it's from April of 2001.

Being a reporter, I sent the source of the article an email to check its authenticity and am waiting for a reply. I will keep you posted.

I agree CODAchild, :applause: I don't see why or how can signing on a school bus can be distraction?....

I don't believe there's more to this story, I think the school is making a big deal out of it....Signs is never loud or noisy, so I don't think it's right for the school to tell a 12 years old not to sign on the bus ( this reminds me of Mayfield HS ), but if she was a bus driver then that would be different issue! heh....
