Different brand of tires

On my 2001 Isuzu Rodeo is a set of Kumho tires. They really lasted longer than the goodyear eagles that was on my zx2 escort when it was new.

Last old tires from my wife's Ford Explorer, were BF Goodrich Radial Long Trail T/A, had about 2/32 inch tread depth left and very level treads no sign of worn corners, had been rotating regular as same time as oil/filter changes. They were about 3 years old sound good? No, my wife drove it about 8 k miles a year. I told her that they would last about 6 months but she want fresh tires and bug on me. I gave up and end up with fresh set of Cooper tires. In few weeks later, she was right about the recently heavy rain in SoCal.

3/32 inch tread depth or less is very dangerous for snow,ice, and wet road. You try kill her? :shock: Just kidding. I think she was scary about tires blow up due Ford Explorer was famous rollover with Firestone tires. I don't believe Explorer had 13-million recall! That's beat Toyota's recall for ETC issue.


My wife pretty drove a lot for business travel and she made almost 3-4k miles a month. Thanks god, VW Rabbit's oil life last 5k. Thanks to 5W-40.

In SoCal, they still drive with bald tires or 1/32 " or less left tread wear during drought weather days. On rainy day, we sell a lot wiper blades and some tires.
Firestone tires on Explorers were awful. My wife's Explorer is not having a rollover issue cuz she can sense the vehicle handling if strange handling she will call me to check out it for her.

You says Rabbit use 5W-40? Oh no, it is too thick oil. You know that any thick oil can reduce engine life and increase emission. Older german vehicles still use thick oil for hot weather season.

Really? Then why VW recommend to use 5W-40 and it last 5k miles for oil life?

In the 1980s, to improve fuel economy and engine performance 5W-30 oil was introduced which was then used for a duration of 3,000 miles. Gotcha, you are right about the VWs use 5W-40 according to Kendall 2005-08
Crankcase Oil Capacity Chart. All VWs include diesel. Audis, Porsches and MBZs use 5W-40. BMWs include Minis and Volvos use 5W-30.
Alldata says 5W-40 for VWs,can be alter 5W-30 if 5W-40 is not available.
At a gas station, I use 5W-30 oil for all VWs cuz of one 55 gallon drum of 5W-20 and other large 120 gallon bulk of 5W-30, still have 5W-40 (cases) but they are for mini mart store.
I've not see any VW comeback for mechanical breakdown since oil change. My opinion is 5W-30 oil for VWs are better for winter time cuz the thin oil helps the engine warm up faster and heat up cat converter quick, reduce emission. dst

(sorry for the much delayed response...)

To be honest, I don't know. He's hearing but since that post, he's allowed his ASE certification lapse. Now he's an electrical engineer and claims that the ASE certification was for his car enthusiast days and to make money to pay for schooling. If he ever gets that itch to build modified cars for a living, then maybe he'll re-certify. Until then, I don't think he'll be touching cars too much other than necessary maintenance.

What kind truck are you put new tires?

We need know truck info before we say anthing about tires.
