I hope this makes sense....

I don't know how much TV you folks watch, but NBC is having a special tonight to raise money for the tsunami victims. I called and was going to give a certain amount. The more I was remained on hold, I decided that I could squeeze a little more and double the amount I was donating.

The more I think about it though, it depresses me because I wish I could give more. I know the money will be put to good use, and that money will do those victims more good than it would for me.
My problem is it hurts to not be able to give more. I look at my paycheck and then think of how much those people have lost. I wish I could afford to skip rent this month and donate an entire paycheck....

Anyhow, when you folks donate to various things, do you walk away feeling satisfied or do you feel kind of disappointed? Tonight I walked away feeling bad.....does that make sense?

I am in same boat as you are in. I am frustrated about that.. I wish I can donate much more but I can't due to bills and other things.

I have been thinking about them (Tsunami victims) time to time ever since the news popped up about that incident. I wish I have Bill Gates' money and I will spend as much as I can to help them out but unfortunately that I am not Bill Gates :/

I do understand what you are trying to say here,Taylor

Too bad that not more folks out there are caring and big hearted like you!

We all can do our best whether it is 1.00 or 100 or 1,000 dollars. It is the action itself that shows our gesture :)

Meanwhile we are spending 177 million dollars a day for the "war."
We do not seem all that concerned.
THAT is depressing.

You're depressing.

Awww Taylor

I know how you feel, I feel the same way too, in facts that I have two children and a single mother and it is tough spending more than what others would offered, I cannot do the same for people who make more than I make. But, My dad told me that donation is no limit amount, if you give what you can afford, It shows you care. I know it is depressing that we cannot offer enough, But we did our part of giving. You should be grateful that you gave. Tsunami victims will be thankful and bless to have warm heart people all over the world that cares, doesn't matter what's the cost. :P

Aww!! ::pitpats:: It's okay!!! Breathe deep, in and out...

As for my post to this thread, I think it is necessary to help however we could, but I don't think we have to be guilted into paying more than we have to. Just my 2 cents!

yea i am in the same boat too.. but i dont even have the money to donate due to bills like loans, etc :ugh: .. (sigh) it is a shame that well-off people dont even care or have a big heart like us to help out in any way we can .. (sigh) but at least the thought counts which does make a difference!! ;)

I don't donate the money on web or anything. I always like to meet people and donate them with things or serives. never with money. Honestly, money don't help them. Sending people over there do help and it is much far better than sending money to donate them.

We have to remember this, giving money to other people always make them to spend on other than what they should spend. It is better if we buy what they want and give it them instead throwing the money on them. Why not you give out $100 dollar to homeless which they never had a home for long time? While disaster people scream for money and they just lost their house for a day.

We need to give objects or services to anyone in world. That is my best advice to anyone.

But it does cost money to send the people over there. It is not a free trip.

It is important to check out the organization. There are many that are good organizations. Just be careful and you will be fine.

It is better if we buy what they want and give it them instead throwing the money on them.
That can work when you help local people but that doesn't work for overseas disasters. It is cheaper to buy the supplies in a country close to the disaster area. The organization can save a lot of money for shipping and transportation that way.

The people in the tsunami disaster lost their houses forever, not just one day.

I know how you feel Taylor, I am in the same boat here, We hardly have alot of money to donate since bills keep coming in and it been really tough, but any amount of money is worth it no matter how much!..I still feel good about myself even tho I don't have alot of money at this time of the month, but I did what I had to do with whatever money I had left...Be proud that you did your share in this, that all it matters to them! ;)

Those were my best advice that I gave to anyone.

I do not support to send money to any org. and they do whatever with the money. I'll consider that way as lazy way. I prefer to work little more than that way. How? I find the place which they need for something and then I buy at local store as their wishlist. I made letter, picture of myself, pack it, stamp it and then ship it them. It will make them puzzled where does that come from, so they can see my name and my picture with a letter. It will thrills them much better than Christmas gift. Also I want them to say oh that comes from someone at USA, than they will mumbles that the Government sent anything to them (Politican reason).

For example, if you went to war and you want something. You will prefer someone sent it you than the government or the org. sent you something.
-----
You always can fly for free, how? Ask government for free flight because you want to support the disaster events. The government would let you fly and reduce your tax to support you. You will work under red cross org.
-----
Your last comment, tsumani lost their home forever. That is right and homeless people have same problem, too.

In other point, I don't understand why our world take serious action toward to any disaster events. We tend to support them provides anything than many homeless people. We thinks that our homeless people are nothing. Really it is serious problem with our homeless people and we need to takecare of it. We also need to treat them such like what we done to the disaster events.

For example, two homeless came at our house out of blue. They said, they want fly to Europe to return their family. My mom said sure and they took them to Europe on the weekend that they came to our house. They flew and returned to their family. They are very happy and they have $. That action from my mom had really impacted me hardly enough and understood how and what we are treating with our world.

I thought that the kid I babysit was really sweet in the way he tried to help. He is nine, and both him and his mom made cookies to sell for relief efforts. He sold some to my parents and then he had me go around our neighborhood with him to sell the cookies. We only made about forty dollars, but every bit counts no matter how small, and that little bit that John collected would help. I also thought it was really sweet of him to do that. :)

It is not always a lazy way. Sometimes it is the only way. One of the organizations I donated to is Water Missions International. They are a Christian group that provides water treatment systems to devasted places. I can't do that myself. Only that organization can do that.

I do other volunteer work locally, hands on, but that doesn't help people overseas.

I prefer to work little more than that way. How? I find the place which they need for something and then I buy at local store as their wishlist.
We send things to our missionaries overseas, and to servicemen overseas. The shipping costs are very expensive. Also, when we ship packages to our missionaries, the foreign country requires the missionary to pay expensive duty taxes on each item that they receive. That is why it is not always the best way to send something.

I made letter, picture of myself, pack it, stamp it and then ship it them. It will make them puzzled where does that come from, so they can see my name and my picture with a letter. It will thrills them much better than Christmas gift.
That is nice if you actually have the name of an individual to whom you can send it.

You always can fly for free, how? Ask government for free flight because you want to support the disaster events.
No, you can't. The "government" does not give free flights to individual volunteers.

The government would let you fly and reduce your tax to support you. You will work under red cross org.
If you work for the Red Cross organization, they make the arrangements for transportation. It requires money. They don't get free flights. They might get reduced price tickets, or military hops into certain areas that don't have commercial flights, but they generally do not get free flights.

Your last comment, tsumani lost their home forever. That is right and homeless people have same problem, too.
"Homeless" people in the U.S. have more opportunities and agencies here to help them. The Asian countries affected by the tsunami don't have an intact infrastructure to help them (even their roads, bridges, hospitals, utilities, etc., were damaged).

Your mom bought plane tickets for two homeless strangers to fly to Europe? How did she know they were telling a true story?

I agree and you do have a good point!

That somewhat true, that's another thing we can do....

You have a very good advice there ;)

Reba,

My mother came from Czech Republic, and they happened to have right person to talk with my mom about flying back to their family at Czech Republic. So I guess my mom had short quiz on them about Czech. And I know that they spoke Czech Republic very good as their natural laguange. I remember that two homless smelled soooo horrible and they look very damn dirty. I had to spare my clothes to them to help them. THey stayed at our house for few days. It is a wonderful experiences.
---------------
You can fly for free from Government. The government will give you free ticket and it will be called stand-by ticket. It means if a plane isn't full then you can hop on for free. If it is full then you gotta wait for next plane to hop on if it is not full. I do that all time with traveling around the world because my mom worked at the airline company, ATA. From that experience and it makes sense with me comments.

Oh yeah with water treatment, It is always best to buy water at their location. Yeah we can't just send our water to them. We gotta throw money at any org. or government for water treaty.

You can go over there and build anything. Government always play their game with politican on their country's org. It all because of TAX. I know USA can be dirty but oh well.
