Cops: Mom throws sons, self off freeway; all live

27-year-old mother, boys survive 22-foot fall; she may face felonies

DALLAS - A woman threw her two struggling young children from a freeway overpass during Wednesday's morning rush before leaping off herself, police said, but all three survived the 22-foot fall into traffic.

Khandi Busby, 27, and her sons, ages 8 and 6, were hospitalized in stable condition, said police Sr. Cpl. Kevin Janse. They are well enough to speak with investigators, police said.

All three landed on concrete in the far left lane of westbound Interstate 30 at about 6:30 a.m.

"It was really miraculous that we didn't have some fatalities with this incident," said police Sgt. Gil Cerda. "At this particular time, there is very heavy traffic and it is fast moving."

Police believe Busby and the 8-year-old were struck by cars. There were no car accidents on the interstate below, Cerda said.

Busby could face two charges of attempted capital murder, Cerda said.

Janse said Busby and her sons were in a car with her father, heading to a friend's house. When they stopped for gas, she took the boys to the overpass while her father was paying for the fuel, Janse said.

"She was not fleeing for her safety," Cerda said. "She just threw them over and decided to throw herself over."

Her father had to make a U-turn to follow her in the car and by the time he reached the scene Busby "had picked up the kids and thrown herself over," Cerda said.

"The why remains a mystery to us," police Lt. C.L. Williams said. "If you try to apply logic to these incidents, they totally defy any logical explanation."

Child Protective Services had intervened with Busby at least twice but for incidents that "were relatively minor in nature," Williams said.

Busby has a criminal record, including convictions for assault and criminal trespass of a habitation.

She admitted she wanted to throw her kids off... twice? Where does it say that?

Geez, the post-stress trauma the kids are gonna have to go through is going to be extremely tough. I just hope they can get the help they need to work this out and live happy llives.

Only 22 feet down? No way will be die at that depth, but injury pain in the ass

Yes, death can happen, especially if you went head down first. You can break neck that way and it can be fatal.

There's something wrong with their mother. Maybe she is suffering some kind of mental illness?

I wonder what they meant by "relatively minor". What did she do before?

i dont know but that could be like leaving kids alone at home or something like that? so not sure??

I felt bad for the kids.. :( now i am sure they wont let the mother have the custody of kids ever again not after what she did to them.. jeez..

new update.. cps want custody of the boys!

DALLAS - Child Protective Services on Friday filed for custody of two boys whose mother is accused of throwing them off a freeway overpass into rush-hour traffic before jumping herself. The younger of the boys, a 6-year-old, was placed in a foster home after his release from a Dallas hospital late Thursday, said Marissa Gonzales, a CPS spokeswoman.
The 8-year-old remains hospitalized in critical but stable condition, Gonzales said. She said the agency chose foster care over several family members who were considered.
Both were thrown onto Interstate 30 near downtown before dawn Wednesday.

The boys' mother, 27-year-old Khandi Busby, remained in custody at a hospital and is facing a charge of attempted murder and injury to a child, police said.
A court date for the first hearing on this case has not been set.

Liebling, I did heard about that. REALLY STUPID!!!!... and another bad story, too

the Mom throw 2 kids down on the traffic. She just drove with the same time throwing their kids out of window car, why? Because, she want their kids live in the US, so she lives in Mexico. *rollingeyes*....(naja) their kids are alive and stay in US. I don't like this. I wish, their kids should be back to Mexico, because here have too many mexican People.

Well if I were the medics I would have scooped the boys up but have left the mother there to pick herself up without getting run over. Stupid woman doesnt deserve to live after that stunt.

What's wrong with Mexican people? I take offense with that comment cuz my ex hubby was born in Mexico and he is the father of my daughter who is half Mexican. Most of them are hard working people who just want a better life like any of us.

Yup, got agree with you.

Every people can commit crime, don't matters about immigrant or citizen.

That's really sad. I can't imagine how a mother can do such thing like this to her own children. Indeed, the world has gone mad to a point.

In overall, It's good to know that the children are able to survive this ordeal but yet, they have a long way to go to recover from this, emotionally and mentally.

I work with Hispanics or 'Mexicans' in your terms. They all have their different personalities. Some are lazy, some are good workers, and others are workaholics. (There is a handful of them at my job that work a full shift from 5:30am-2:00pm there then go to either Wayne Farms or Tyson and work from 4:30pm-11:30pm. EVERYDAY) They are taking advantage of the fact that they can go to work here and send part of their money back home to their families where they can afford things like cars, decent housing, and stuff we take for granted like a washing machine.

Yes some are going to be criminals, but its not right to stereotype them altogether as lazy and delinquent. (This post however does not mean that I am OK for illegal immigration, Im not, but Im not going to dive into that issue).

Yet anothe example of failures in protecting chidren..

I know and I hate it with passionately. They have the power and authority to save those kids when they're in a dangerous situation, but they don't take actions seriously.
