Breast Cancer

It is interesting that ladies go to hospitals or docs just to keep up-to-date.
Men will go only when something is wrong.

Sorry Meg about your friends :( Also Sorry to hear about your friend's sister too Beowulf :(

I would have to disagree with that, because my aunt Jenny had breast cancer too and she was a stay-home mom and also did breastfeed both of her daughters, So I doubt it has something to do with reducing of breastfeeding. ;)

Thanks Cheri.

There are many factors. I did not say this is the only factor. Breast feeding reduces chances, it is not a cure. There is no 100 percent prevention but each factor will reduce chances. Some could do everything just RIGHT yet get breast cancer and some could do NOTHING and lead an unhealthy lifestyle yet never get breast cancer.

It is all about rolling the dice, so to speak.

It hurts, Mag.
Maybe this is one of the reasons guys do not like going into hospitals, you see a lot of negatvie stuff and don't want o experience it again.
A wussy attitude I know, but gee whiz.
I have no doubt I am about to catch HELL from those whom I love, lol. It is just so difficult being healthy, ya know? Heh.
I know beyond a shadow of my being that I will wear out some day. I know that. But for now I am still in denial. Peter Pan stuff. What a ferkin idiocy.

This is another topic but please do check yourself for prostrate cancer. Ive done a thread on that but very few posted there. :squint: Go figures :)

Life is too short not to take care of ourselves. Denial shortens our lives.

It applies to relationships too. LOL. Most men dont sit around and talk about prevention approaches to saving relationships or just talk about it. They wait until very last minute to try to fix it.

Ironic huh? :)

Oh, I know that, Meg, hugsss. That is the way the cookie crumbles I guess.
It is not right, I know, but goodness gracious, let's not toss civilization into the ocean. As long as there is communication there is hope.

Meg, I am very sorry to hear that you lost your friends. :(

Women, PLEASE do monthly breast exams and get mammograms yearly!

Yes, I get the annual doctor exam and mammogram.

In the past 2 weeks, I have lost two wonderful friends to breast cancer struggle. Both were in early 40's. One left behind 4 beautiful young children and another one left her heart broken family/friends. It has been devastating for me.

Women, PLEASE do monthly breast exams and get mammograms yearly! Please do not put it off...it is so important to catch it in very early stage, thus increasing chances of beating it.

My heart is heavy with my losses. Please educate yourself on monthly breast exams and talk to your doctor about mammograms.

we already talked via aim.. so ill just SAY HUGS here.. :)

I dont know about that, Mag...but I deeply believe it all has to do with environment and either reducing breastfeeding time or not doing breast feeding at all due to more and more mothers working and opting for not breastfeeding or limited breast feeding time. Also I also believe it has to do with age of having first birth. More and more women are postponing birth of their first child. That also increase the risk. In addition, you see doctors giving HRT at earlier age.

i am not too sure about that?? look at what happened to amy!!! sheesh...

she had her first child at the age of 23 (which is very young)... and she was diagnosed with b.c in '96 after she had both of her boys.. she breastfed them for over a year each... then celine came along in '98 known as the miracle baby!?!? so how do you explain this!?!? and whats more... she had no history of b.c in her family either!

That is why I said there is no such thing as having 100 percent prevention. Life is funny and unfair. What happened to Amy was a totally freaky thing :(

That is why MAMMOGRAMS, SELF CHECK EXAMS and CLINICAL BREAST EXAMS ARE VERY VERY IMPORTANT! THE EARLIER YOU CATCH, THE BETTER YOUR CHANCES WOULD BE IN BEATING THIS! Sorry to be shouting but want to make sure you all hear it! :)

In 1993, when I was only 23 years old, I had a breast lump....it turned out to be non-cancerous after I had it removed in an outpatient surgery at the hospital. It was called a "fibroadenoma". I am blessed that it wasn't cancer.
I never had done breast self-exams or had an exam by a doctor until I found out I had a large lump that year, and now I am more careful about finding anymore lumps in the future. That's why self-exams are important.
Also, I had a distant cousin that I knew who died of breast cancer around 1993. She was a very sweet lady....she lived in Alaska most of her life and so did her kids (all still live in Alaska). We all still miss her.

Aww..I understand your frustration.

Again we must be responsible and educated about our health issues so we would not get intimidated by doctors and feel comfortable to demand second opinion if not feel comfortable with first opinion. Most of us unfortunately dont do this :( Doctors are not gods! LOL

FeistyChick, that's why some medical professors recommended all of us to have second or third opinions from different doctors to make sure that everything is in order. One of my friends had to check in five different doctors to get the result. Five.

For me it took over 50 different doctors to get opinion that I felt comfortable with. It took me 4 damn years but I refused to get intimidated by drs. Finally I got proper diagnosis and accepted that opinion. Unfortunately I had to pay out of my pocket to pay for many unauthorized visits without approval by my insurance company but I didnt care. My health comes first and Im not going to let a lousy doctor tell me what is right or wrong.

my uncle rich.. you know about him... he always encourages his patients to go for 2nd opinions.. unfortunately one patient who had female problems (i don't remember the whole story as it is vaque cuz it happened like 20 yrs ago) got so upset and felt he was "rejecting her"... she tried to sue him for malpractice!!! poor uncle rich went through hell for a few years with her/the courts, etc.. thank god he won... (sigh)

i always go for 2nd opinion if feel the need to... but so far.. i have been very lucky with all of my doctors! "whew!"

I am so sorry for your friends who died due to breast cancer. on good note, my aunt went to see her dr last friday because she had breast cancer, dr said she is cancer free for 5 yrs last friday. she is thrilled.

breast cancer does run in my mom's family, several relatives did die from it. I just talked to my Ob Gyn about mammogram...he said who is the youngest in family to get breast cancer, my aunt was around 40 when she found out she had breast cancer.

Dr said minus 5 yrs off your age. meaning I have to go at 35. instead of regular 40 yrs old which is common. It was interesting. I am about to make a dr appt for early mammogram since so highly for breast cancer in my family, my hubby is worried, because we have two very small boys. I don't blame him at all.
