Autistic Boy and Mom Kicked Off Plane

Mother Says Flight Crew Should Have Been More Understanding

Read this long 2 pages article.

ABC News: Autistic Boy and Mom Kicked Off Plane

I feel bad for mother but I need Airliner's side first before I can say something. There're alway have 2 sides but this article written only one side.

What do you think of this?

Maybe mother didn't bring the proof that her son is autistic?

Yet, flight is probably only option to go on travel by country to country. Hmm... Maybe there need to have new specs seat select for child out-of-control. :Shurg* Like baby non-stop crying.

Ohh now I understand why my grandpa was paranoid about telling the airport staffs that he have alot of health issues and mental issues when we went on a flight to Greece.

TJ used to be austitic when he was young.. he DISLIKED being touched by something like belt or even jeans, etc.. he would CRYYYYYYYYYY when i put him in carseat. he HATE it.

i understand why the toddler didnt want to be put in seat with belt on. TJ was like that. I have been there before.. sighs..

The parent should have gotten a relaxer and give to the toddler. just like when tj had to go thru mri.. he WOULDNT STAY still so they had to give him a relaxer and he fell asleep. so they were able to do mri on TJ's brain.

if they had given something to the child.. they wuld have gone to their destination. thats what i think... hmm...

Relaxer i dont think so. It is the parent responsiblity to get the child under control. As for the flight crew and they should have some basic training for a special needed situation.

I know one person who is autistic boy and he is so cute and he doing well.

I am not an expert on this but have seen it. Maybe Jolie77 can answer to this cuz she know more about it.

I have worked with a few autistic children and I have noticed when they were in a strange environment with sensory/stimuli overload, it was difficult to get them under control. However, my experience is limited so I cant really form an opinion. Like Liebling, I would need more testominials from more people especially from nuetral parties.

The airliner's side (it was on the news last night):

Mom uncooperative. Refused to stow the bag in overhead bin as per FAA regulations on top of the esclating(sp?) child situation. Unfortunately, Mom could not control her own emotions, thus worsening the emotions of the child. It was a bad day for both, but still a disruptive situation to the entire aircraft so the crew did the correct thing. They would do this for anyone who's disruptive, even ppl who drank too much, etc.

Relaxer? do you mean Risperidone? I thought Risperidone is not approved by the FDA yet. :dunno:

thats bullshit. If it was stated what the kids condition was, there should be some sort of understanding.

"And, even though Farrell said she explained Jarret's autism to the flight crew, they only made the situation worse by reprimanding and yelling at the toddler. "

obviously the flight attendents only made it worse by being douchebags.

In addition to dead money's statements, I must add that a 2-year old toddler is not a threat to an entire flight.

I find it overwhelmingly incredible that a pilot of a passenger jet would find a 2-year old toddler (forewarned to be autistic) a threat to a flight.

If it was only the kid, more understanding on the crew's part would probably be forthcoming. BUT Mom also created problems by refusing to comply with the flight's FAA regulations and not staying calm. The crew at that point apparently didn't see any further use in cooperating with a Mom that refused a basic request in the first place. Kids have their moments. Autism or not.

I agree. For kids with problems like that should have special medication for situations like these.

Yes, the airlines are liable for what happens to passengers if they are not secured properly. If they airline decided to leave the seatbelt loose for the kid, he eventually got out, and got hurt... then the airline would be responsible.

It's like those rides at amusement parks. Those ride attendants have to ensure that passengers are secure in their seats before they can start the ride.

it could have been avoided somehow. The flight crew obviously had no sympathy for the problem at hand. Theres ways to cool down an autistic child. And its all over a stupid bag on the ground. WTF? And a "must be tight" seat belt. Yeah just throw fuel on the fire, you dumb cunts (flight attendents)
But whatever. I hope she sues and gets a nice consolation package.

That's the thing... You know, with an autistic child - the task alone of getting an autistic child in a strange surrounding or a new, unfamiliar environment is a difficult task. With a normal child, it is somewhat easier to get the picture across because they are able to understand where they are going or being in a new atmosphere. With an autistic child, it is a daunting task because they are already accustomed to be in a familiar or much less, of a comfort zone. I can tell you from experience, when they have a meltdown - it isn't a pretty picture.

According to the article - It states that the mother did cooperate with the flight attendant by letting the bag to be in the overhead bin. And with that, it was in compliance with the federal regulation. In all this mass hysteria - the autistic child was naturally overloaded with his sensory/stimulus. The mother was prepared to cool him down.

Also, the thing is, I know that familiar items can help a child feel safe and secure. This mother should have brought the child's carseat on board. Actually ALL children under 5 should have a carseat on board, but that is another issue. If he had been restrained and comfortable in his carseat, this would not have even been an issue. There would have been no seatbelt to tighten, no way for him to get out and roll on the floor.
