Am guessing there was a "Buy American" lecture in there somewhere. I am not a mechanic. American car in the 80's and 90's were mostly built in Mexico. Toyotas were built in Kentucky, I believe. The other issue I have is the pay scale for the top executives. American CEOs command a much larger salary in comparison to their Japanese counterpart. Because of this, American car makers cut more corners; forsaking quality in the name of profits; remember the Pinto? And Cowpuppy is right; when the American car builders were busy turning out the SUVs, with no concern about the effect it would have on oil prices, the Japanese stayed with what they knew would be their best bet; smaller cars. Another factor to consider: trucks and SUVs have much different safety requirements. Car makers have stricter safety guidelines. The SUVs were not required to meet the same specs. They get by because they win most of the contests with smaller vehicles. I suppose I should provide graphs and links, but screw it. Why bother? I am, despite my repeated MOR assertations, branded a Liberal idiot. I see no point in providing anything.
