A lawsuit in California that was filed last month by angry parents who object to a gay-friendly curriculum they say is being foisted on kindergartners could well become a test case for schools around the country.

Parents in the Alameda Unified School District were refused the right to excuse their kids from classes that would teach all kids in the district's elementary schools about gay, lesbian, bisexual and transgender alternative families.

The parents say they are concerned about "indoctrination" in the schools, but administrators say the course is needed to protect against sexual discrimination — and that the lessons are protected by laws in California and 10 other states.

Those states, which stretch from Washington to Maine, will now be eyeing the court results in California in a case that warring sides say pits parents' rights against a schools' responsibilities.

To learn more about controversial teachings in school tune in to a FOX News Reporting special, "Do You Know What Textbooks Your Children Are Really Reading?" which premieres Friday, Sept. 4 at 9 p.m. EDT. Click here for a preview.

The contested California curriculum includes an annual 45-minute LGBT lesson taught to kids from kindergarten through the fifth grade. The kindergartners will focus on the harms of teasing, while the fifth graders will study sexual orientation stereotypes.

The move toward the new classes began two years ago, when teachers noticed that even kindergarten students were using derogatory words about sexuality, such as "fag."

The FOX News Reporting unit was present at a debate in the school district in May when angry parents pushed back against the controversial lessons, capturing over 10 hours of heated dispute, which saw parents shouting back and forth across the aisle.

Some parents like Carrie Brash said the curriculum is necessary to combat bigotry that was already rearing its head among even young children, who were bullying her daughter in school.

Brash said her daughter had to endure taunting chants of "Lesbian, lesbian, your mom's a lesbian," from kids in school.

But other parents said the new curriculum ignores other kids who have been targeted for abuse.

"My child has been the product of bullying because she's black," said Dion Evans, who noted that students have "never viewed a single video in the classroom" that deals with racism.

But Evans said he wasn't expecting the district to take care of what he called a parent's duties in educating his daughter, as the school is "already (too) strapped for cash to incorporate these changes."

"I know how to successfully parent, educate, and instill value and self-worth in my child," he said.

I think children need to learn about the different kinds of families so people wont get bullied or worse, killed!

Yup, agreed.

I don't think that court will going be care.

I dont think people who dont work at schools really understand the seriousness of bullying and harrassment and what it can do to children. I didnt until I got into the teaching field.

One parent said that it was his duty to educate his daughter about these things which is fine and understandable but what about those parents who actually teach their children bigotry, hatred, and violence against the GLBT community? Or even parents who dont bother to teach their children about anything?

Good for them.

It's wrongful to discriminate on GLBT because it wasn't their choice to change the sex orientation, especially me, I have accept my bisexual because totally impossible to be straight, also it wasn't my choice either.

CA does have anti-bully law that protect GLBT children so children would face serious punishment if they did.

Then put under a bullying course instead that teaches the finer points on why kids shouldn't bully and tease other kids rather than to try and make this into an agenda specific politically correct mandatory course.

It is indoctrination under that scenario.

We have tried that...a bullying course. Didnt work.

Children need to learn about diversity.

kokonut, I know you want discriminate on GLBT, including me so it's very big wrong for you to do, man.

Bullying at children because of GLBT isn't right, it could cause child suicide in anytime because school isn't responsible so enough to cover the bullying situation.

I think it's great that they are trying to teach younger children about GLBT and to open their minds and be more accepting.

But why stop at just GLBT? Like that one woman in the article said, they don't teach about diversity towards other cultures and races. They should consider teaching acceptance towards everyone, including the GLBT community. There would be more kindness and respect in the world if they did.

not teaching a gay friendly classes is not discriminatory towards glbt.

hatered towards glbt taught by parents at home becomes fodder for discriminatory behaivor.

School curriculums forcing beliefs and opinion on children and families that do not wish their child to be exposed to those beliefs is also a form of discrimination....

I never knew about your orientation!! Fer cryin out loud!!! Holy moly mother of god!! Will you stop this nonsense of yours! I certainly do not know everybody's orientation here in AD!! Nor do I care.....!!

Back to my regular programming....

Put under a neutral course called "Anti-bullying" that will cover all bases. Anything other than that it gets into the grey area called "indoctrination."

I know, it's better way to keep child out of trouble for bullying.

Is it discriminate if child is forced to attend in AIDS/HIV classes at public school?

Edit, I'm sorry if you think so way like that, however if anyone don't support anti-bullying to cover race, religion, sex orientation, gender, disability, etc so it make me to think about it's okay to discriminate them if school is unable to protect.

no it's not. teaching children about not being a bully and dealing with bullies is the route to go. not forcing opiinions and beliefs on others

if you talking about health and sex ed courses taught by schools, it can be discriminatory if the course is forced on the children of families that don't believe it should be taught to their children. our school district gives the parents the option for heath and hygene only, for the young kids. I have yet to see any family take that option. most of the families that are against the school polocies home school their kids anyway... or they go to a private school

Your comment doesn't make sense, man.
yes it does look at you post #11 on this thread
