A Major Rant..

What exactly are Goth spiritual beliefs? Is there one set of beliefs for all Goths, or are spiritual belifs irrelevant to "Gothism"?
Goth is NOT a religion. It's a subculture. Therefore, their religious beliefs (most often Christian or Jewish) dictate their spiritual beliefs.

Why do Goths wear dark clothing and makeup? Why do they wear heavy clothing and boots even in hot weather?
Because we like it. :P
Reba said:
I thought Goths don't like being labeled?
:ugh: So what? Some do, some don't. You can't make sweeping generalizations like that.
Reba said:
What does that mean? What is "official" Goth?
Well, dressing like one and labeling myself, pretty much. I have been told that I am already at heart, but I don't always dress that way. Occasionally I do, but not always.

I'm very curious. I don't personally know any Goths, although I have seen some on campus. In my youth I experienced the beatniks and hippies (been there, done that), so I'm wondering if this too, is just another counter-culture phase of youth.
It is so obvious that you haven't because you obviously have no clue what it's about. Goths are very kind people despite their interests in the paranormal.

I read the article but it didn't really explain the Goth philosophy.
The goth philosophy is to cherish being different. Goths are often very different from each other in the way they express themselves.

I know there are goths in high schools but wonder if there are subculture of goths after high school like in college and real world??

Actually, yes. Look at me. I'm 25.

I have known goths and punks who are much older than me. :)

They come from all walks of life...

... I had few friends who are devil worshippers... but they were REAL nice people i ever met... It is their beliefs... i have nothing against any religions... I am sort of agnostic...

People should respect others and their beliefs..

That's the part I'm trying to understand. What is Goth "at heart"? Is it deeper than just clothing and makeup?

What is their interest in the paranormal? Why are they so fascinated with death? Is it because they are disappointed with life?

Much of this seems very similar to people and interests that I knew during the 1960's and early 70's. I guess the subculture has always been present but under different names.

Goths are often very different from each other in the way they express themselves.
How so? It seems that they are very cookie-cutter similar to each other in appearance. There seems to be a lot of conformity amongst Goths.

Yep, I've seen that movie and it was good. I don't think it is fair to accuse/blame on that girl when she first didn't take that " witchcraft " book from the shelf at the library. It was her male friend who did it and shared it with her while he was readin' it. She seems to be interested in learnin' about witchcraft and what people use it for. That book is in public that was open to everyone who ever looks for it. I know about " witchcraft " is not good for some Christians like me, but knowin' that it is about people's " choice " and that's their business. It's their life what they make it.

I know that girl who got confused about school's policies, because of violatin' her rights. Her Bill of Rights and all. I don't support " Zero Tolerance ". I think that Zero Tolerance is really ridiculous and nonsense, it caused them to feel that their freedom of speech, freedom of choices and all were takin' away. Gee -- what happened to this country, our Homeland America ?

Goth is fashion that what people wear style for clothes, also it's their culture like punk.

I think its important that people disassociate truth goth from the goth fashion. Too many subcultures have become prone to marketing from corporate influences. Punk has been bastardized into a fashion, as the same with emo. These are 2 subcultures that have their own set of values and meanings, and they've been turned into nothing more than a fashion, which is the anti-thesis of their purpose.

Being goth is more than just dressing up in dark clothes and pale makeup

Not all of them are fascinated with death, and it's certainly not because they are disappointed with life. If they wanted to die so badly, wouldn't they all be dead by now?

Perhaps, but it was influenced in the 80's by gothic music.

Hmmm.... Maybe that's how you look at it, but it certainly isn't what most people are like.

Well-put. I have noticed that even though we're supposed to be the Free Country and all that, if you don't conform to the mainstream, you get treated like you're bad, stupid, and/or insane.

That's what I'm asking. What is the essence of Goth?

... If they wanted to die so badly, wouldn't they all be dead by now?
Not necessarily. One can be fascinated with death philosophically and thematically, and yet fear its application at the same time.

Hmmm.... Maybe that's how you look at it, but it certainly isn't what most people are like.
So, if someone held the same Goth philosophy but wore pastel prep clothing, the other Goths would still accept that person, right? That is, it is the philosophy that is important, not the outer appearance, right?

There aren't any "spiritual" beliefs for Goth. It's just a style that expresses the dark moods such as depression, sadness, quietness, etc. Now, it's just a style and doesn't necessarily mean you're depressed, sad, or anything.

Why do Pentacostal women wear only dresses? Why do Amish men not shave (except before marriage)? Oh wait, Goth isn't a religion. Yet, the concept is still the same.

There's no "real" or "official" philosphy for Goths. It's just a depressing and sad culture. ;)

It's like the culture of punk, hippies, rednecks, etc. It becomes popular, then it fades away... but remains alive through people who still follow it or find it facinating.

OK, thank you. :)

This country was derived from Christianity; as well as our Constitution of the United States.
Hmmmm..... It might be more accurate to say that this country was derived from Native Americans whom I don't belive were christians. And to say derived from them is putting it mildly. People tend to forget that we were not the first ones here. There were American Indians here way before the white man. And what did we do to them? Slaughtered them and stole there land. Not a very christian thing to do in my opinion.

I think he's referring to the founding of the United States of America and its government, not the general geographical area of North America. The Native Americans/Indians that were indigenous to the Americas didn't have a national government at the time the 13 colonies sought their independence from Great Britain. Our country's system of government wasn't derived from the Native Americans.
