9-1-1 is not required to answer calls

What happen if heart attack?

You can't ignore the 911 call.
Apparently the law does not require 9-1-1 calls to be answered.

Of course, until the operator/dispatcher answers the phone, no one knows what the emergency is on the other end of the line. That means, the operator could be wasting time with a non-emergency while a real emergency doesn't get picked up.

a solution for this problem - learn how to deal with it yourself.

robber? get a gun.
bleeding? get a first aids kit
choking? get a CPR training
fire? get a fire extinguisher

enough of this "gimme gimme gimme" attitude.

but building fire? serious injury? shot fired? call 911.

How do you give yourself CPR ?

I think part of the problem is that there are people that will 911 for the most stupidest thing. I heard of someone calling 911 because they did not get enough french-fries in their order.

CPR is givin to people who are not breathing. If you're by yourself and you need CPR you're screwed cause you're not going to be able to call 911. I think his point was to know CPR so you could use it to help others.

I think the biggest problem, as Jiro was getting at, is that people are not properly prepared for common problems. Instead the rely on someone else who may or may not be available. There are only so many first responders and at times they can all be busy or to far away.

Most of our first responders are attached to the fire departments. The follow-up ambulances and EMT's are from ambulance companies scattered throughout the area. Some companies have their own ambulances and EMT's. When my son-in-law had his accident at work, the company EMT tended to him, and he was driven to the hospital in the company ambulance. His work place is out in the country, and it would take too much time for an ambulance to be dispatched from town, so they maintain their own ambulance and EMT on site.

Our hospitals also have helicopter ambulances that they use quite often at accident scenes.

Hospital ambulances aren't used for hospice.

I wasn't talking about hospital ambulances

That is what 911 is for.

good. just making sure you're not confused....

Don't forget about car accidents that may require rescues. Anyway, I believe that there are many ambulance services all over. They don't work for the hospitals (independent agencies).

but I was talking about the ambulances that don't work for town/city/hospitals. these kind of ambulances are for hospice purpose.

yep. exactly. I'm not gonna bother with quibbling over little details.

the point is - don't be useless especially for yourself and to others.

To make sure, there are ambulance services that take elderly people to nursing homes? I have never heard of it.

My mistake. You were referring to private company ambulances.

In our area, those are equipped for emergency assignments, and staffed by EMT's. They are provided by private companies but they aren't for hospice transport.

They do have patient transport vehicles that look like ambulances but they are marked "Patient Transport." Those are not for emergency calls. They can be used for hospice or for transporting to nursing homes or other hospitals.

Both kinds can be supplied by private companies.

They do that here but only if they're transferring from a hospital to a nursing or rehabilitation facility. That's only if they really, really, need it. They don't pick them up from private residences, and they're a rough ride.

Maybe in your area. Not in my area. They do both kinds of services.

yea it pretty much depends on budget and stuff. in here - we pretty much have everything. I was amazed at how many different kinds of FDNY ambulances we have. These are designed for "mass emergency" - not sure what's the proper term for situations like 9/11, airplane crash, etc.

At JFK Airport, the Homeland Security training drill put out a highest level emergency broadcast and pretty much a whole squadron of FDNY, NYPD, Port Authority, FBI, CDC, etc. came. They never knew anything about it in advance. It was a surprise test. They were told that an airplane had crashed and hundreds of people were injured.

they did triage and for those with non-life threatening injuries... they line up at mobile hospital which is a bus. it's a quick touch and go. people enter from rear and exit from front. felt like a factory line. and dozens of ambulances lined up to deal with critical cases to take them to hospitals.

We also did a scenario where an airplane had to be quarantined because of an infectious agent. There was couple of other scenarios that were highly classified and only limited to armed emergency rapid response teams. When the whole training drill was over, we hopped on the buses to head back to terminal and we passed by it. There were a few overturned cars and it looks like a small warzone. I guess they were training for something elaborate like a bank robbery from Heat movie. I was told that it was also a training drill for firemen to deal with car bombs at airport.
