6 figures to be "middle class" in NYC!

You guys in the homes @ bay area have nice views, esp the ones near the bay..
I like the loft homes, they look fancy and modern age to me...

I hate the parking though. It is a horror trying to park with a manual.
I'm from Socal, sarasf!

I am an expert parker, but can not handle a clutch on the hills around here. My first two cars here were stick and I would be so nervous on the hills rolling back and tearing out the clutch. From the top floor of my house you can see a little of the ocean and the Marin Headlands.

:laugh2: I bet! I can imagine.

Mmm, I grew up in the bay area...so I know what you're talking about. :)

My dad's Nissan truck with stick shift had hard time struggling going up hill in SF's VERY steep street...it's like 40 percent angle or something. I remember when dad was trying to get it moving...and finally moved up hill since it won't move at all.

He He... I was trying to go up a hill in Pacific Heights in a junky stick Subaru and just couldn't make it. I put in neutral, backed down the hill and took a longer route through the Presidio to avoid the hill.

Where did you grow up Sequoias?

Hehe...that must have sucked...but worse case...if you tried to get up hill on a dead end street...u're screwed. That's what happened to my dad, he's very lucky he made it.

I grew up in Santa Rosa area and also in Oakland, those are the areas I grew up for the longest period of time.

Yes, my first time thru downtown was hell, I still remember it.. Those hills freaked the hell out of me because I felt like I had no immediate control over the car. Then the people behind me are honking at me to hurry the hell up or they cut me off in the other lane.. giving me dirty looks as they did

Oh that would be scary! How about going down the hills? Sometimes it's so steep you can't see below you when starting down. The car hangs there for a few seconds.

Yes, that happened too...It is scary and feels like we're gonna fall off the cliff!

WOW! A 2 car garage in the city of SF?! I'd figure that the space would've been occupied with all those people.

QUOTE]

The house is built on top of the garage so there is room in the garage for 2 cars and an in-law apartment if you could get a permit. There are two floors above the garage and the house is attached to the houses on either side. I could rent a parking space for $300 a month but don't want anyone to have access to the house.

:jaw: That's a rip-off!

It's hard to drive in downtown SF because of all the one way streets and no left turns. I just got a GPS so I will have an easier time now.

It doesn't help when people are honking behind you. I get really nervous. Very rude!

I wonder how a 16 year old would pass a driving test on those hills in San Francisco?

It won't be much of a problem with an automatic...but with a manual, good luck! I've been there and done that in SF with a manual transmission of course with a drivers license. I get nervous because I don't want to end up rolling and hitting a car behind.

I know people who take their test in south city because there aren't as many hills and it's supposed to be easier. I don't think that they would take you on the really steep hills for your test.

Dale City area, I take it?

Seattle do have some very steep streets, and SF isn't alone after all. :)

Too bad NY is so expensive and Manahattan Island is basically flat filled with tons of skyscrapers, there's nothing there but skyscrapers and a Central Park which is a "view". Sometimes, I don't get why they charge so much for those while you can get someplace at a way better deal with lot less traffic and peace.

Hey everyone would y'all mind steering this off topic discussion about hills and parking back to the original topic about how expensive it is to live in NYC?

If you want to discuss this offtopic subject on parking a car in the hills of SF, please create another thread...

Haha, I steered back to topic one minute earlier that you posted. :)

Oh okay, I see. I have never been to San Francisco so I have no idea, really.
