I dunno why are we getting all hot and angry over this. This piracy thing has been going on for thousand of years.... and will continue to even space age.

an interesting side note.... US Navy was originally created to combat against pirates.

I agree that we shouldnt let it happen. I think the moral of the lesson is...dont venture in waters that have been known for pirate activity.

Still, I dont feel anyone deserves to be killed for stupidy. Let's hope others not do the same stupid act.

exactly. we should not bomb nor destroy a country over this. All we can do is fend off pirates like what people have been doing for thousand of years.

700 hostages? hardly a justification to launch a military strike against a country.
 
Somali will eventually fall apart and go back to it's tribal-states days before colonization, but of course not before the Somalis nearly wipe each other out. Somali is like Afghanistan for Africa.

I have a friend that frequently goes to Africa - Kenya more specifically and she has been to Sudan. I asked her WTF was she doing in Sudan? She said they were near the border and decided to take a quick step into Sudan. I replied unless she wants to contribute to more international unrest as a hostage to the Sudanese she ought to stop taking these quick strolls to this area. It's not necessarily violent where she goes, but it is dangerous. If I were to go to the African continent, I would want to go to South Africa. I have other friends who are going later this summer.
 
Americans used to travel safely and freely all over the world. People in other countries were afraid to offend much less kidnap or kill Americans because they knew there would be hell to pay for their actions.

Now, Americans are an easy target for every two-bit pirate or land thug. Why? Because they have nothing to fear. They know they can get away with murder (literally).

Now, Americans have to flee countries every time there's unrest, and they have to avoid international waters that are controlled by itinerant lowlifes.

So the solution is to instil fear of the USA in all of the countries? This is exactly why the USA has a bad rep these days. I guess you got what you asked for.

By the way, that's not true. There were plenty of countries that wasn't safe for people (including Americans) to travel in.

Sudan's not that all bad. Only some part is awful. South Africa isn't any better either... especially Johannesburg

I've heard quite a few horror stories about South Africa. Canada has plenty of refugees from that country.

No, that's not why the USA has a bad rep. It's because the USA presents a weak front now. No one fears the USA anymore. The people of other countries laugh at the USA, and attack with impunity.

Because I'm an American. I can criticize the policies and practices of my country's leaders. Do you want me to criticize the leaders of your country? Do you feel left out if I don't?

I also wanted to add that Libya isn't that all bad either. My colleague has been there and said that it was very "third world" but not that bad.

We were told: "once you are in Sudan you will realize how advanced Egypt was". In the end, if Egypt is wealthier it seems much better to live in Sudan (well... outside of conflicts areas). People are happier, calmer and more pleaseant, they give the feeling of being good people in majority.

Aurel: People seem happier and more relaxed than in Egypt where people walk on each other all the time.
