    ASL: A Paradigm Shift

I go to college in an area where there are a lot of D/deaf people. I was talking with two of my friends today (both hearing, one knows ASL and the other is interested in learning) and we decided that at least in that area everyone should know at least basic ASL, whether they are hearing, D/deaf...

You have to be Deaf to understand

These poems are excellent! I am hearing so even though I have my own problems, I still can't say I know what it really means to be deaf. But I think these kinds of poems along with books being written and all that can help the hearing world realize what it's like. Absolutely! I never want to...

    How would you define ... ? :D

I put "hearing" and "other" because technically I am hearing. I don't need hearing aids or anything for oral conversations. But I do turn the volume on the phone most of the way up (my mom HATES that), and I have random short times (longer than a moment, not always the same amount of time) of...

    deafness due to psychotropic drugs??

Thanks for your input. I am currently in the search for an audiologist in my area. Unfortunately, I'll have to wait until Monday to call in. (Grr for early closing on Fridays....) Anyways, I am planning on seeing a doctor, I just had decided to put this up here in case any of you could offer me...

    deafness due to psychotropic drugs??

First, I would like to ask that no one comes in here spreading all their eastern medicine stuff. **coughcough** I'm not looking for a change in my treatment. So here's the deal.... I am on medications for Bipolar Disorder. They are Lamictal (since late 2003) and Paxil (since fall of 2002, with...

    Who has the right?

That is a very good idea. Unless the TV is all the way up, it usually can't be heard across the street. Even when it's close to all the way up, unless it's in the front room with the door and all the windows up, it's not always heard, even by hearing people. Usually it's the music with lots...

Hold a Grudge is a Mental Illness?

That is not true! Just because you had a bad experience, doesn't mean that there is no such thing as actual mental illnesses. Besides, your experience was with something completely different! Yours was a medical problem. I know about this stuff. I have Bipolar Disorder, so does my mom, my...

    mental illness?

It just sounds to me that something this serious is gonna need medication. I'd just think seeing a psychiatrist as the first stop might not be the worst idea. But then, I've been surrounded by this kinda stuff all my life, so that's my opinion as a "crazy" person.

    Do I Understand?

Oops. I ment to add under the first quote that it shows that she was saying, "Stop teasing me, I can hear you!" Not that she wasn't Deaf.

    Do I Understand?

I really hate to ruin the argument (not to mention, I feel bad that I cannot contribute to the actual topic of this discussion) but I have to point a few things out. Jillio, I don't know you very well but it seems like you are doing a great thing. However, everyone needs to get their facts...

    mental illness?

Sounds like it could be a number of things. Here's my list of possibilities: - Bipolar disorder - Schizophrenia - Paranoid schizophrenia (not sure if they're different or not) - Plain old paranoia It's really sad when you see people go through this stuff. My mom and I have...

Reason why being Deaf is great!

Are you kidding! I think vibrations from music are profoundly amazing! There are so many other ways to make music accessible and just as awesome (maybe moreso). After all, Beethoven was an awesome composer who actually became more talented as he lost his hearing. Just an off-topic thought.
