School frustration

This is a bit of a rant...

I go to a mainstream school and have no supports aside from seating in the front of the class, and the use of an FM system. I have a profound loss and I wear hearing aids, I can perceive speech sounds with them but I need to speech read in order to communicate.

The other day I was at school and my teacher was talking to some new teacher interns that were coming into our class. He brought them over to me and said "this is our only disabled student." I said back to him that "I am not disabled, I am Deaf.". He argued that I did have a disability because I can't communicate effectivly without supports. I responded by saying that I can communicate perfectly effectivly with ASL/PSE. Bascially we argued for a while before he said "fine you don't have a disability. Then you don't need supports at school" That afternoon he made sure the front row was full, so I had to sit near the back of the class. He also refused to use my FM. I took off my hearing aids and read a book in the back of the room. I was mad.

Who was right in this situation?

I don't know what is going to happen tomorrow. Do I apologize? Ah!

No, you don't apologize. He was totally wrong for taking away the accommodations that had been provided for you, such as your preferential seating. This man is an insensitive oaf, and he was completely in the wrong. First of all, it is not his place to introduce you in that manner. That is a breach of confidentiality. You must self disclose that information.

This man has no place in a classroom, IMO. I agree with Chase and the others. Take this to the top. This man needs to be put in his place.

I never knew people who are allergic to peanut consider themselves as disabled and they need to be away from people who eat peanut butter and jelly sandwich. Everyone have their own unseen disablitiy.
What your teacher did to you is WRONG!!!!!!!!!!!!!! He needs to go back to training in sensitve area. grrrr.

We should write down and have u make copy and show them to your most idiot teacher to read about us.

WOW... your teadher actually made a harsh RUDE joke on you .. he or she tried to prove that you are disabled.. by doing this kind of rude joke on you...You have to do something against that teacher..At first I did chucked at your post until I re read your post... realized it was cruel joke on you... he or she was wrong for doing that to you...

i think he's hinting that he wants to have an affair. perhaps you should kick him in the balls.

My wife was brought up in the Mainstream school district and she had supports such as interpreters...note takers..and deaf class empowerment. If I was you, I would take my concerns directly to the Principal...if no joy at the Principal...then you would have to grow some balls (I'm not saying you don't have them but a lot of high schoolers stop at the Principal) and go to the Superintendent. If still no joy....then go to the Media such as Tv..newspapers..etc.

You'll see they change their attitude so fast they wont be able to say "Ah"

I agree! Jenny, you need to start standing up for yourself and call that teacher on what he said. What he said, if it was done here in the states, is NOT legal.

Perhaps you could have said after he said that and disagreed, "And the guy talking to you only has one testicle (or impotent). I know." Just to see what the others would say or react.

That is a very good point, jazzy! This man has a disability....it is his ignorance and insensitivity! And he uses it to try to disable others.

HUH?! Apologize?! For what?! NOOOOOO!!! The teacher needs to apologize to you. You have every right to correct them when they say ignorant statements.

I believe that what you teacher did is illegal! A break of the ADA law. Do you have an IEP where they write down your accommodations? If you were accommodated to be sat in front of the class and an FM, the teacher is required to use it. WTF is wrong with this teacher?

You need to speak up to someone about this incident. You might want to tell your parents to talk to this nasty teacher or a counselor to set this teacher straight.

What was the point to mention that you were the only student with a disability? What was important to say is that you are Deaf and need to read lips, period. That's what is the NORMAL thing to say. "This is our only disabled student." What kind of HELP is this statement for you and the intern? When people say, "she's deaf" or "she has a hearing loss" or "she has a disability," most people respond to you with a pity because they don't know what to do. Saying, you're disabled isn't helping anything. When they mention you read lips, it is helping them become aware of your needs.

Don't ever be sorry when someone says something so stupid and unhelpful. People simply should say that your'e deaf and needs to read lips, that is all.

Do speak up to show him you have equal rights as everyone else.

I laughed so hard.. i read your thread.... i mean no offense... that teacher was trying to prove that you are disable without any kind of supports...I dont know if you should apologize??? IMO.. he is right you are disabled without any supports.. you need to sit in the front row... you also need to use FM...Perhaps you can tell him that he is right.. you are disabled without any kinds of supports...

To be honest, the FM doesn't really do anything anyway. No FM isn't that huge of a deal. I still speech read 100% of the time no matter what. Front row - that is a big deal.

As far as an IEP is concerned, I don't have one. I had one when I was younger but I refused to use aids for a while so they took it away. When I started back with the aids I never bothered to get a new IEP set up. Most teachers never questioned my accomodation requests.

But having the IEP on file will support you in the case of another teacher deciding to behave as this one did. I would reccommend that you request it,simply to have written record of your hearing loss on file with the school system. Documentation is extremely important in the case of disputes.

Outrageous behavior by the so-called "professionals."

Jillio and Chase, good suggestions from the real professionals. :)

check me on this, but i don't believe students have the authority to fire teachers.

That would be correct hehehe

I spoke with a few people regarding the situation and hopefully I will have some answers next week.

There's no need to apologize. What the teacher did was wrong.

You were simply pointing out the proper way to label yourself. While "disabled" is too general, saying you're "deaf" is more appropriate so that everyone else knows what your disability is. Saying "disabled" will likely make people think that you are in a wheelchair or something.

Your teacher also has no right to say, "Oh, okay... fine. No FM system for you. Go sit in the back of the room!"

So, talk to your teacher's boss. :)

speaking of school frustration, i'm a tutor, but obviously many students have no idea what a tutor is. they think it's a synonym for personal and/or grief counselor. the other day a woman bitched to me for 45 minutes about how her faith is the only thing keeping her from killing herself. i'd just met her 20 minutes before she spewed her effing life story and all her problems on me. everything she did was accompanied with a self-deprecating remark like "i know you gonna think i'm dumb when i ask.." or "you prolly think i dumb, huh?" and nearly cried several times.

christ, save me from these people.

i know what a tutor is..haha at least..i think i do! haha person usually someone not in school anymore or a student tutor that gets paid to help students in [a] certain subject(s)

the key phrase being in certain subjects. therapy and psychiatry are not among these subjects.

I don't need to check on you. I do not think you understand what I mean. Thank you for your comment~
why, you're quite welcome. quite welcome indeed!
