Who lips can or can't you read on t.v? I can understand Nancy Grace but I don't have a clue what Larry King is saying.

Just about everyone as it's very hard to lip-read on TV as I used to have a small sized TV but have just bought a larger TV screen, it's still difficult to lip-read ... thank goodness for captioning! :) The only person I can think of who speaks well is Oprah.

If they were in front of you in person, then I'll probably be able to lip-read depending on who it is. Everyone has different mouth movements ... they either mumble, speak well or over-enunciate.

Yes, that's right Ozzie.

I can read German and English lips sometimes due their mouth movement. Depend their mouth movement, I can read or not.

I wish I can use CC it would be better for me. ( my family is all hearing and they complain about it.) Larry King looks like he mumbles and he always looking down and not looking at the camera.

I think lip reading is just like fingerprints, They are no two people that talk the same way.But it does depend on mouth movement.

Sorry to hear that your family is not being understanding regarding CC for you.

That sucks!

Wow I can't lip read anyone off TV except maybe a few words here and there. I always use the captions unless its a sports show (baseball, soccer, hockey etc) I dont need to see what they are saying.

I cant do that cuz the camera doesnt always stay on the person face.. or the person had overgrown mustache. Or have their mouth cover with hands or clothes or other.

Yeah, I know what you mean. The person has to be looking at the camera for me to try to understand what it is that they are saying.

I can lipread almost anyone except...

- those who have thick beards/mustaches
- those who speak with accents or foreign accents
- those who speak too fast

Pepsi,

I agree with SecretBlend about people who don't keep closed captions on whenever you're around.

Last year I bought a huge (for me) 43-inch plasma TV and I can read lots more lips, but I still need closed captions to enjoy the fast flow of most movies.

I was at my girlfriend's daughter's house. She and her husband always turn closed captions on whenever we visit. One day a teen grandson complained about "them stupid words" and the parents were all over him like a cheap suit. He was sent to his room for a half-hour time out for disrespect to a guest. I expected him to come downstairs sullen, but instead he gave me a note of apology saying he spoke without thinking and begged my pardon.

Good kid, good parents.

That's great that they got onto him about that.. some parents wouldn't have done that..

I find that I can lip read people with an English (as in not American) accent. I don't know why. But in reality most of the shows don't let you read lips...they do a lot of moving around and stuff. Camera doesn't always stay on the person's face. I also find that I can lipread a lot better with soap opera shows...perhaps because I already know the dialogue. If there's a wedding - someone's going to get kidnapped, poisoned, or die. If there's a funeral, someone will come alive. LOL. Knowing the context helps with speechreading.

Personally, I agree with Secretblend to see how your family feel about not be able to hear the programs and you can not lipread very well. You need the close captioned very badly along with open captioned(subtitle shows) so that you can get the full story of what they are saying on the T.V. Your family is rude to not understanding what your hearing loss is or what deafness is. They expect you to lipread all the time and don't need caption on it. Shame on them. You have a right to have close captioned. So go for it and don't get soft on them and say okay, no close captioned for me and you all hearing people can watch without close captioned when I am around. Be firm with them and say I need close captioned, period. Good luck! :) ;)

Pepsi Lover,

Your family is being very disrespectful and thinking of themselves first isntead of you. You are not the only one with a family like that. It makes me sick to my stomach when I read situations like that.

Anyways, back to the question...

I do not even bother to lipread the actors/actresses. I am tired of lipreading so if the show doesnt have captioning, then I wont watch it. I aint working that hard for TV shows. Ugh!

I know that I need to stand up for myself better than I do and I need to start with my family. Thanks everyone. :)
