deaf woman claims she was denied service from Steak & Shake

Never heard of that restaurant.

I don't like the word "misunderstanding" they used. It's not misunderstanding if they chose to react in this way. It's ignorance, not "misunderstanding."

i don't have problem with steak N shake i prefer walk in shrugs

that is drive thru always a problem

Never heard of the restaurant, either.

You're right it was ignorance, no question about it!

I hope they won't sweep it under the rug. I reckon deaf people in that state should go there and test them and then take them to task if they don't accommodate them.

I believe that is one of the american restuatants, but never heard of that either. But I am disapopinted on how they mistreat the deaf people. Unlike, my former workplace, which was the McDonald's Pty Ltd -- I worked there for 3 years. Since I resigned, there was a lot of changes taking shape, including the drive through. Are they trying to dump deaf people for not using the drive thru, they should know that they CAN NOT use the speaker due to their hearing loss/deafness. They should accept on what customers want. For that employee... it is definitely a shocking rudeness to them. They should understand the law of the discrimiation act or whatever. Why aare they doing that. The employee should just say, "Oh, I'm sorry... How can I get for you today? " < --- How is that really SIMPLE???

I usually go to Steak N' Shake quite a bit, but this does kind of bother me. I don't know if I'd stop going there simply because of one incident though. Companies in general don't do well financially through intentionally bad customer service so I don't think Steak N' Shake will let something like this slide.

I had similar experience when I use drive thru at Wendy. They told me to go inside and I refused to move my car. Manager came to me and told me to go inside (writing notes to me). I said hell no because I told them that I expect to be treated like other customer which I shld recieve the same service. Manager threatened me by saying he ll call cops. I said ' go ahead and do it'. Manager stared me with the evil eyes and he finally give in my demand. In the end, they gave me free meal LOL.

My point is that do not give up just if they deny you. It is illegal for any public to discriminate you period. If you dont believe me, then you need to know about Civil right Acts.

Ah, that resturant... it is not known in the midwest to my knowledge and the north. It's more of south part of the states that has Steak n' Shake. I have not yet experienced being denied service thru drive thru at fast food places. Mc Donalds in my area has gotten to know me and became friendly enough to ensure that I get my order thru drive thru. At a taco bell, a cashier who couldn't read (but why a cashier, I don't know) had to ask other person to read my order at the window! The same person panicked when I showed up at the drive thru again and zoomed to find someone to take my order! Pfft. Although, for that woman and several other who had experienced being denied service because they couldn't use the speaker is purely igorance. If that happened to me, I would just not go to that local... just the other local, same fast food place. Same applies to how they serve to walk ins. It depends on a specific location on how they handle their customers because they should go by "the customers are always right!" :) Just a penny for my thoughts....

I've visited Steak and Shake with no problems in the east. Although we don't have that here in the west. They're not so bad place to eat.

As for the drive thru, I haven't had problem with discrimination, and I usual have a note ready to hand to the cashier what I want to order and pay with cash. I explain that I can't hear speaker and they understood. So far I have no trouble going thru "Drive Thru" But I've heard some people discriminate on deaf customers by refuse service. As for me, if the line is long and heavy, I'd go inside to order to save time and convenient for them and people behind me.

Just my thoughts.

yep, i do the same

I had problem with McDonald's once and I did called customer service..guess what? I got NOTHING! What a bitch!!! So next time I'll go inside and talk to the manager...it does waste my fucking time that I wanted something to EAT! GRR!

I had no problem at any others drive thru. All I said I can't hear the speaker and hand her/him my note that I wrote down what I wanted to order.

I had a problem with Wendy's last week. When we used the drive-thru and we ordered what we wanted and she refused to do it. My roommate wrote down "accept deaf rights!" and gave it to her. She shut up and filled out the order and we paid for it and parked the car at the parking lot and got the order and drove away.

I like to eat at Steak & Shakes. We don't have one here but when we travel upstate to Columbia there's one, and when we travel to Indiana and Michigan we go to the ones there.

I don't think we got the whole story yet. It said that the headquarters hasn't issued the final decision about training or punishment for that employee. At least the woman got a response from them. That's a start.

Also, Steak & Shake is a franchise business, and even though each franchisee is supposed follow the corporate rules, it doesn't always happen. What happens at one Steak & Shake doesn't necessarily hold for the others.

I'm not so surprised, it happened around here before when we were denied for service at the drive through window. I love Steak and Shake, didn't have a problem with that restuatant but I did had several problems in the past with Burger King and McDonalds. but so far they're doing a lot better now..

I had been ordered the meal via drive thru at Steak & Shake, no problem with employees but I guess it's depends on location, some are good or bad service.

I had situation with Taco Bell in last 2 weeks, one lady looks so depressed and refused my order then I wrote the note about would talk to her boss if she still refuse the service then she was scared and rushed to make meal then paid it, ugh at her.

We have that restaurant here... great place. I've never used their drive-thru service though. That restaurant is more of a place for eating in. :)

As for the woman, saying that she will never return is pretty harsh. It would be a good idea for them to meet with the woman to get a better understanding of what happened. :)

gee i cant believe that.. sometime happen to me.. i went piss off and refuse leave til they get me food! i dont care! my hubby know me i am dare person..

Towards the end of the news article it says that Steak-n-Shake would like to sit down with her to discuss the situation....

I've heard of Steak-n-Shake...great shakes.

Luckily where I live, we have no fast food restaurants! Afterall who wants to have their arteries clogged with all that grease?
