Last night, I was watering plants in my front yard. Suddenly, I saw a yucky tennis ball roll past my feet. I looked over my shoulder, and there was a happy, handsome black Lab. I picked the ball (it was nasty; pieces were missing, and it was covered in dog slobber). I said, "sit", and the dog sat. I threw the ball, and he brought it back. I said, "drop", and he dropped the ball. We did this several times. Finally, I said, "We need to find your family." So I walked across the street, and down a few houses to where some kids were playing outside. I asked if it was their dog, or if they knew who's it was. Nope, no one knew anything.
So, I put the dog in my backyard, made a big sign for out front, and started asking around the neighborhood. No one knew anything. I drove around further. Nothing. We called the local ASPCA and animal control to report that we found the dog, and to find out if anyone reported one missing. No reports.
This morning, I opened the hatch of my Jeep and said "up", and the dog hopped in. I told him, "sit", "stay", and he did. He rode in my car perfectly, just sat in the back, quietly looking out the window. (We brought his nasty ball with him, and WHEW!, does my car stink now.) I took him to the ASPCA to get scanned for a microchip. Nothing. So I filled out some paper work, and took him home. He didn't like the shelter, and I didn't want to leave him there. They have my phone number, so if someone is looking for him they can call me.
I have to go to the store soon and buy some dog food and a collar. I hope his family finds him soon. I love Labs (used to have a couple) but we can't keep a dog now. Besides, his family needs him. He is well-behaved, and obedience trained (expect he didn't obey the "don't roam" command, ha, ha).
This is the third animal in three weeks that has popped up in my yard for rescue. The critters must have some kind of "network" about us.
