NON-PROFIT GIVES FOSTER KIDS SOMETHING TO UNWRAP

Some kids ask for bath towels, slippers, pajamas, backpacks, jeans. Others want a stuffed animal, a book, a special toy. The sort of things most kids take for granted.

They are children in the foster care system and their situations vary. Some live in group homes or shelters, others with temporary families. Many have been abused or abandoned. What they share is that most of them are forgotten at the holidays.

Georgia Butterfield has made it her mission to see that at least some of these kids have something to unwrap on Christmas Day.

``There are 6,000 minors in the foster care system in Alameda County and our goal is to have gifts for at least 600 of them,'' said Butterfield, who sells real estate in the Fremont area when she's not cajoling donations for Adopt An Angel, the non-profit organization she has led for the last 10 years.

Alameda County Child Protective Services provides the names and sizes of the young people. A tag is made for each child with his or her first name, age, sex and -- most important -- the child's fondest holiday wish.

``I read through about 15 or 20 of these tags at a time and then I just have to get up and walk away for a while,'' said Butterfield. ``The things these kids want are just so basic.''

One year, a 17-year-old girl asked for pots and pans and dishes.

``She knew that when she turned 18, she'd be `aged out' of the foster care system and would have to try to make it on her own,'' said Butterfield. ``She needed stuff to help her get her life started. That situation just has to be very frightening.''

Another year, a little blind boy wanted a guitar.

``Somebody not only bought him an acoustic guitar, but offered to teach him,'' remembers Butterfield. ``Unfortunately, because of confidentiality rules, we could not put the two of them together. It broke my heart.''

But then there are the moments that lift Butterfield's heart.

``We've gotten short notes from some of the kids who say the gifts they got made it the best Christmas ever,'' she said.

Butterfield was looking ahead to her worst Christmas ever when she learned about Adopt An Angel. It was 1994, and her son had recently died from complications of a stroke.

``In my office, they were wrapping presents for Adopt An Angel, a program I had never heard of,'' said Butterfield, who was inspired to take up a roll of wrapping paper and pitch in.

``It helped me,'' she said. ``I really believe that when you give to the community, you give to yourself.''

In addition to holiday gifts, Butterfield and her volunteers try to provide basic clothing -- jackets, sweatpants, sweatshirts, shoes, socks, underwear -- to the evaluation center where children are awaiting placement in safe housing. Many of these young people arrive at the center with only the clothing on their backs.

The situations these children find themselves in can be tragic. Butterfield wants them to be able to forget just a little bit at the holidays.

``We want to give them the feeling that they're not abnormal,'' she said. ``That for that one moment they're just like everyone else.''

Wish Book readers can help. Each donation of $40 will pay for presents for one child. A gift of $50 will buy basics for one child. A $5 donation will provide wrapping paper and tape for about 15 presents.

My dear ^Angel^, you are indeed an ^Angel^.

This is a great way to contribute to a child's Christmas!

We do have the StL Post-Dispatch/United Way 100 Neediest Cases, Toys for Tots, and the Salvation Army - and many other charities that really come alive at Christmas.

It's a great way to contribute year-around, too, as that way, they will have a nice stockpile of gifts when the holidays roll around.

I myself do contribute to the Toys for Tots and Make-a-Wish Foundation, and you can find other charities that you can contribute too!

Smiles,
DD

Kids would be happy to get a toys , clothes and etc for on xmas day to make them feel happy than upset, or sad that who are donated for the kids :) just like a miracle :D

I went through this when I was a kid. When I was a foster kid, I would be taken to these special parties for foster kids. Such parties were "Halloween" and Christmas. For Halloween, foster kids could dress up and go to this haunted house where we got a bunch of free candy. For Christmas, foster kids would meet at this fancy hotel and get a free present from Santa. There was also games and free food as well.

Awww That's so sweet. I wish more people would have a heart and help out those poor children. :(

awww!! It was so nice.. I wish it have the address so I can send some presents for the kids. I grew up so poor. My mom and I were on welfare in our whole life till I got a job at age 17. I know how the kids go thru the situation. BUT glad they got something that they are wishing for.

Oh yeah it remind of me when I was young that my mom couldnt afford alots for me and my sisters when she was on welfare but suprised other school place gifts us my mom , me and my sisters lots of gifts then we make a card to said thanks for gifts us and we are happy got lots of gifts cause other ppl donated give to school for who ppl are poor cant afford same thing with thanksgiving foods.

That's so nice of them, because all children should get something for Christmas, It's the holiday where everyone gets together and share the holiday spirits. ;)

I've done my share of donations as well even through I'm a single mother myself but I do give some there and there as best as I can, because I know those children don't have parents like us, they need the love that we can give to them ;)

Keeping Christmas spirit ALIVE! :) it's nice to have xmas BACK! lol

It is nice when people donates a gift to the needy children. We have a 'Wishing tree' in a big shopping stores with the children's age/sex on a tagcard which is on the tree. We always buy one or two gift and place them under the 'Wishing tree'. I like to think the children are happy with their gift when they get it. :)

I was thinking and wish all adopoted kids go to big place somewhere that got LOTS OF gifts from other ppl who donated. adopted kids can open them the gifts and have fun playing around in the place like all day till night to have FUN!!! then goes back home and playing with the gifts of toys or etc to make them feel happy with smile faces :D
