More than 3,000 people over the age of 65 commit suicide in Germany every year. The World Health Organization estimates that the number is about 1 million worldwide. Euthanasia is only legal in Belgium, the Netherlands, Luxembourg and Colombia. Assisted suicide (when the doctor doesn’t actively participate in the suicide but makes it available) is legal in Germany and some states in the U.S, including Oregon, Washington, Vermont, New Mexico and Montana.

Roger Kusch is chairman of the Sterbehilfe Deutschland (Help to Die Germany), or StHD. Johann Friedrich Spittler, 72, is a psychiatrist and neurologist who provides StHD with expert assessments of the mental and physical condition of people wishing to die. For 200 euros a year ($223), members of StHD can get suicide assistance, at their own request, after meeting the requirements. A one-time payment of 2,000 euros ($2,232) for a lifetime membership is also possible. For a onetime fee of 7,000 euros ($7,812) there’s the most exclusive “Membership S.” The association has around 600 members. Members must have reached the age of maturity, have the ability to understand suicide and consider the alternatives to it.

Even though assisted suicide is legal in Germany, both Kusch and Spittler were both charged with manslaughter in May 2014, mainly for being present and staying until their clients were dead. The court has not yet decided if the case will go to trial, but both men are careful now to leave the scene of death to avoid more legal troubles.

Ironically, many of the members of StHD are not terminally ill. Some are nearing an age when nursing homes are becoming an option, but they’d rather die.

In the event of an assisted suicide in Germany, cameras are set up to record everything that happens beforehand, especially with Kusch or Spittler repeatedly asking if the client really wants to die or wants to consider the options. When the client is certain, two beakers of a lethal liquid are brought to the client. Before drinking the first, the client is told there’s no going back once it’s ingested. After the client drinks both, the cameras come down and the men leave the client to die alone, to avoid legal trouble again.

In the U.S Brittany Maynard, a 29-year-old woman who had terminal brain cancer, went public with her decision to end her own life. Maynard is one of more than 750 people in Oregon who have ingested a lethal dose of prescription medication since the Death with Dignity Act went into effect in 1997. Unlike the law in Germany, in Oregon and most of the states that make assisted suicide legal, the patient must be terminally ill. In fact, two doctors must confirm a diagnosis of terminal illness with no more than six months to live.

Sick. Really.
They are making a beurocracy for the killing of people.
As always,
This will End bad for many.
Im not opposed to people offing themselves, but creating a beurocracy and filming it is so twisted..
Its disempowering. It takes power away from the person, and white coated docs hold the keys...
Why?
This is sick.

How is it ironic that many of these members are not terminally ill?where is the irony?
I dont get it.
Why only for the.terminally ill?
If people want to leave this world they should be alowed, it shouldnt just be for the last 6 months of ones life...
Nice membership s.7000 euros...dsmn..for whwt exctly?
Get.some herion and overdose...its done if you want it...or shoot yourself in the head, or hang your self what ever...what they hell do these guys need all the loot for really?
Why the industry and beurocracy developing around it?

With the non-terminally ill, I can sort of understand that. Imagine if you can't even work anymore nor can you even drive or take care of yourself. Would you be all excited to just sit around your room watching TV all day?

Sadly some people would not have a problem with it.... People should have a right to die with dignity... Having the other "options" as last resorts causes too many heartaches.... A loved one should not have to identify the remains of the determined.... Never should someone have to find a hanging body or have to scrub blood from the cracks of a house.... Going the direction of ODing may not kill the determined rather just create another drug addict....

For someone who knows about drugs okay and a done deal...no argument there....however if a person does not know about them...meaning they are truly ignorant...then they would not know the first place to go look, how to obtain it, and will end up killed (which will solve the issue) or in jail (which I guess would solve that issue as well)... Or they get it and do not know how to use it....any number of issues on this idea...
As for the filming...it is to protect and wiggle around legal loop holes that only make assisted suicides legal if you can prove that it was by request of a sane and competent person....
My whole issue with assisted suicide...isn't the economics or "entertainment" aspect... It is how long before it becomes policy and part of "healthcare" for the government to determine if you will live or die.... Already some can argue it is there....but still...

never I so against doing it like this....if person commits suicide at home then that up to them, but with good pain relief should not come to this as for just being old or mental ill that awful sending them to this clinic..i think it part of the clinic in Switzerland.they popping up all over the place that scary

Oding was just a suggestion, a bullet in the hesd is another or what ever...
Im pretty creeped out with idea of a beurocracy and industry being developed for your suicide.
I offered oding. Because thats around 60 dollors conpared to the s membership of over 7 thousand euroes. Really suicide can be had cheap.
again for me
i have no plm with people offing themselves. Its their life. its upbto them. I think allowing doctors the power to decide.who goes and who stays, is dangerous...

Agreed about doctors having a say...but what about people who have religious reasons for needing to have someone else do it?.... A bullet, oding, knives, and the like would not work...but then I still see it as suisse if you make the decision and put it into motion regardless of the method used to end the life....

Those religions such as catholic which view suicide as a sin and oppose euthanasia, view murder for hire (which is what assisted suicide is stripped of the word games, if money changes hands for the dead.) as a sin also and oppose it. So the idea one can hire someone to kil them and it will be acceoted as moral in that faith anyway for them doesnt hold...
Just as an example.

I can understand that... Curious though, you say they still view it as a sin... But in this who would be considered the sinner the person who wants to die, the person who hires the killer, or the killer....or is it viewed that all three would be the sinner?

All three would be sinners according to that faith. of different sins.
Murder is a sin
Suicide is a sin
Murder for hire is a sin
Paying for it also would be....
So the individuals involved would be sinning.
In that faith which matters to those who are members of it.

By chance would you know what loophole or word play faiths that view suicide or murder for hire as a sin would be using to attempt to legalize assisted death?

On the topic of sin when I was a kid going to catholic school I could never get a straight answer to this question: If heaven is such a wonderful place why don't I just kill myself and go straight there and avoid all the hate and suffering here?

I seem to run into the answer of "because suicide is a sin"... Thus heaven is closed to the sinner.... But then

The answer should be, "Because God has a work for you to do on earth, and you aren't done yet."

The straight catholic awnser woukd be founs in the catachism.but ntshell is suicide is a sin, a serious one at thst. So assuming you will get to heaven by commiting a serious sin doesnt add up woth the tenents of that faith for those who adhere to it.

Nutshell for thst faith. Its clear. In the catachism. Its speeled out.
But as an outsider it makes sense in consistancy anyway
If your fsith has and holds the idea of hesven and hell and sin. Then obviously sinning isnt the key to heaven.
