Hello there
My name is Laura. I'm in my fifth Semester studying " special education"(specialising in deaf/ hard of hearing) in Hamburg/ Germany.
Like probably a few of you here I have some problems with my hearing. I'm deaf on my left hear and I have a high hearing loss on my right ear. I decided to become a teacher for deaf and hearing impaired children mostly because of my own experiences and my two internships in schools.

I plan to study abroad for one Semester and I don't know where to study. Which University is quite good in deaf/ hearing impaired education?I already looked up some interesting universities ( University of Kansas, University of Northern Colorado). I'm not from the States, and I unfortunately don't know anyone who studied in this area , so I don't know of the Reputation of the universities etc.
Even if you can't help me choosing a university. Maybe you know a good school for hearing impaired children? I also plan to do an internship there:)
Would be great to hear back from some of you :)
Laura

Since she's deaf herself, why do think she doesn't know it already?

Regardless..

I always went to a regular school and all members of my family are hearing so I never really thought about learning signing earlier :(
Still not sure wheter is was good or bad that I went to a regular school.
I started to learn the german sign language one year ago. So I'm not really fluent in it ( I hope I will be soon tho)
Gallaudet sounds like a great university but with my lack of Asl knowledge it's probably not a good match for me.
Where are you all from? It don't have to be the States for studying abroad but I assume that the USA is quite good in this area of education.

watched bbc media programme some years back and sign not encouraged in Germany hope it changed in last ten years

Hi laura.
Germany was a wicked place by the way, crazy anarchists in berlin gave me the time of my life...that said...while i am an earthling....im also a canadian duel italian citizen
Awsome your learning sign
Sign is our language girl....
it will set you free...

Look into Gallaudet anyway.. they have a large pool of international students who don't know ASL but either pick it up as they go along or attend NSP (New Signers Program)- I can't remember if we had anyone from other countries except for Canada (there were at least 2 or 3 Canadians in my year...).

Don't let the fact that you don't know ASL stop you- It's a good learning experience at Gallaudet.

Yes, Germany has always been VERY oral. Remember oralism came from Germany orgionally?

Canada is international, but they also use the same Sign we do, except for Quebec where they use LSQ......And there's always a huge pool of kids who were educated orally and or mainstreamed who end up going to Gally.

Jep I know but you have to keep in mind that the german sign language only had been recognise as a "real" language in 2002 ( way to late) Thats why Germany has to catch up a lot ..It already changed a bit tho. They use more subtitles in tv and the schools for hard of hearing/deaf kids don't focus on oral education so much anymore. I've done an internship in a school and even the oral speaking class used sign language in class :) So I guess we are on a good way.

WOW! To both...... I had no idea that German Sign was only reconized as a real language so recently!!!!
And YAY that they're using Sign in the deaf classes....now the next stop is to nudge more kids to those schools or to the dhh classes

You want to be immersed in environment with lots of other Deaf people... So Galladuet, California State University, Northridge (CSUN) or Rochester Institute of Technology RIT. National Technical Institute for the Deaf (NTID) is on that campus. You will learn more ASL outside of class than in it if you have a lot of other Deaf students around.

I completely understand where you are coming from, but you need to keep in mind the costs of attending those universities. If she was to attend University of Northern Colorado (UNC), the cost of attending this university would be significantly lower than if she were to attend, let's say, Gallaudet. Also, if she was to attend UNC, there's a pretty good sized community of ASL users now that the university has expanded it's program for Deaf Education and ASL studies.
