Shot By Cop

*shrug* it fits and it makes sense. you can believe otherwise and that's fine with me. he had plenty of time while a girl ran out to a bank and he did not harm them....
The only things I believe right now are that:
1. We don't have all the facts.
2. We don't know the mind of the criminal in this situation.
3. It's too easy to Monday-morning quarterback an event where we have no skin in the game.

I agree. My speculations are only to show that there are alternatives to the officer being negligent as some have said. It could turn out that he was but without that evidence I think he needs to be considered innocent.

As for what the suspect was thinking we will never know. We can only judge him by his actions. As of right now that looks like a man willing to kill to get away.

So guy kills cop then girl and leaves. Now there is a dead cop and girl and a suspect on the run.

a tragedy.

and he's a dead man on the run with hundreds of cops hunting for him.

you know me enough to now that I know that but right now - regardless of facts... it's just plain dang wrong to shoot with a hostage in front of you. just wrong.

the officer said he got scared. seriously? scared enough to start spraying around with a hostage of front of him? mein gott...... mein gott..... a former NYPD cop and a Nassau Cop... of course.... (it's just something that only locals know and they're not very well-regarded).

you and I both know he's gonna lose the badge.

the investigation is looking into officer's action and IA is most likely treating him as a suspect who made a series of bad decisions to establish a negligence - if there is one... which I believe there is.

they're going to look at his shooting record as well and his files to see if he has any complaints filed against him. everything will pretty much depend on whether or not if the girl was killed from first shot.

So if the officer though she was going to die if he did nothing but there was a chance if he took a risky shot you think he shouldn't take the shot?

IA looks into all police shootings. Good ones and bad.

if you're trained for it, do it with the best of your ability. the questions right now are "whether the officer should have opened fire given the likelihood of hitting the hostage" (quoted from NY Times) and whether or not if he followed the police protocol which police department has refused to commented on it.

We don't know what his training was.

he's a street cop. bare minimum training. Nassau County is an easy job. firing 8x is just ridiculous. that should tell you the quality of his training.

Street cops often attend more advanced classes.

I still don't think his level of training changes my point. Do you believe it's morally superior to allow her to die instead of taking the chance to save her life? I'm only painting alternatives. We do not know and may never know exactly what was going though the officers mind.

only at their own expense.

an advanced course doesn't teach you to spray 8x.

Sure, lots do. And compete and train hard. We don't know what he did.
sure we do. he sucked at shooting. when an officer competes and trains hard... he knows not to spray 8x.

No they train you to shoot until the treat is neutralized no matter how many rounds that is.
never heard of that.

but this is not Vietnam War or Afghanistan... this is a nice quiet suburb area. that kind of mindset is what will determine whether or not you'll go to jail for negligence when an innocent person gets killed.

How many rounds would you suggest? Shooting until the threat is neutralized means no more and no less than is necessary to eliminate the immediate threat of death to you and or the people you are defending. As in till he stops point the gun at people.

3 max.

the more you shoot, the more newbie you are.

Maybe you should buy a lottery ticket if you can predict the future :P Many people survive multiple center of mass hits and even head shots. Especially long enough to return fire. Assuming he was trying to avoid hitting the girl he wouldn't have been givin a very good target. Bullets can deflect off the skull and hits to places other than the central nervous system may not immediately stop the threat.

a cop made a split decision to shoot even with a hostage in front of an intruder. what kind of person does that? a coward.
Then how did the intruder get 7 bullets in his body if he was behind his hostage?

We dont yet know when she was shot. Could have been the first or the last or anyone in between. We also dont know how much of the intruder was exposed.
