Correct me if I'm wrong, but am I correct in saying that people used to try all sorts of stupid things in an attempt to cure deafness? (Do they still?) I mean, self-evidently stupid folk remedies. Like trepanation or something.

If so, I'd be interested in hearing examples. (Tell me if I make you feel like a self-narrating zoo exhibit, okay? I tend not to realize when I'm doing that.)

Oh yeah. They used to. I don't know if it is still used for now these days. I wouldn't be surprised if it still occurs. I've heard plenty of stories that has been circulated among the deaf community. For instance, I've known of one - They would take the deaf child to a tribal medicine man to do some kind of ritual on the child.

Another thing is - (Well, it's not a remedy of any sort) One would take the child to a priest/preacher believing that deafness is corrupted by having a demonic possession to perform an exorcism. The priest would lay his hand on the child's head and do some kind of tongue prayer believing that the deafness would be cured.

Don't worry about looking dumb by asking questions. That's what we're here for.

:giggle:....oh yeah...several of some Church members "laid hands" on me while watching Oral Roberts on TV....sadly.....:giggle:...I wasn't healed.....then a co-worker who has highly religious told me that the good Lord didn't make me deaf....that the Devil did....so I've been running from the Devil ever since.....

Deafness isn't a disease on its own. It's a side effect of something else that caused it.

Regular diseases can be cured (unless it's currently incurable and they're still looking for a cure).

With deafness, it could be from a number of reasons and those other reasons are what need to be fixed in order to possibly "fix" the deafness.

Some people go deaf because of a pinched nerve. One guy had his back popped by a chiropractor and that un-pinched a nerve allowing him to hear again.

Some people go deaf because of lack of growth in their ears. Maybe, the cochlear didn't develop properly. Maybe, the cochlear didn't grow hairs like it should. Maybe, it didn't connect to the nerves properly.

Some people get sick from something and a side effect of that is loss of hearing. Could be allergic reaction causing the ears to close up. I have a friend who had fluid problems in one ear causing him to go deaf until he went to the doctor to drain the fluid and go on antibiotics.

Or... it could be genes, but the "deaf" gene varies by individuals.

Cool, thank you! Have they all been religious, or have people made other kinds of stupid cure attempts? I read somewhere that cinnamon is supposed to reverse hearing loss; have you guys gotten a lot of cinnamon from well-meaning idiots?

No, I've come across a lot of well-meaning people, but not anyone who thinks there's a cure for deafness or that we should be seasoning our daughter.

Attempts to cure deafness?

Yes, they are.

It is no surprise, really. They are still going to figure how to end disabilities and diseases, that includes deafness.

How do you ever come up with such a clever come back at the time you can actually use it?

Didn't you know? Cinnamon cures EVERYTHING! Deafness, diabetes, cancer, even autism! It especially helps if you take it with honey so it's easier to stick to the deafness/sugar/cancer cells/vaccine toxins!!!! [/sarcasm]

(Some of the inspiration for this post was taken from Special Kids : A Complete Guide to Autism, a veritable treasure trove of stupid.)

Hearing people have been trying to cure our disabilities like blindness, deafness, handicapped (wheelchair bound), Down Syndrome and even mental illness. Most hearing people don't understand and refused to listen to us when we tried to tell them that we are okay just being who we are. We had to fight them for our rights to be who we are, not be like them. We don't really care about getting cured at all, only some of the hard of hearing and late deafened people. I don't know but we really don't give a damn about getting cured, period. **sarcasm**

Oh, you mean the cinnamon challenge?

I do care. Really, I do. I want my hearing back, even though I lost it somehow in the first year. I even tried to tell Mom that I had lost my hearing by pointing at the head in Gray's Anatomy book on the cellophane pages between the ages of 3 and 5. Mom said that after I had been doing it in front of her for a while, I would angrily cry myself to sleep on top of the book. I had given up after 2 years of it. I didn't get hearing aids until I was 7 and a half. I was the example of a child who started learning my first word when I was 2 months old. I had 4 words by the end of the first year (it was in the baby book). I do what I have to do to live my life regardless, but I want this fixed. If I don't live to see it happen, oh well. Such is life. What we have today didn't exist for the entirety of human existence. This is just an anomalous blip in the timeline of humans (sorry, Facebook has infected me with its latest crap).

If you look at the Volta Voices from back in the '70's they were promoting chiropratic treatments as a cure for hearing loss.

Also Chinese acupuncture claims a cure for deafness. My Chinese wife's relative is an acupuncturist and asked me if I'd be interested, I turned it down because it's full of shit.

GrendelQ, part of me wants to be disappointed that you don't have any ridiculous stories to share. Another part of me wants to feel happy for you not having run into that. Both parts agree that's a silly comeback.

Bebonang, wait, which part was sarcasm? I'm confused now.

Thank you both, purplewowies and CrazyPaul. Your posts are awesome. Just acupuncture or Qi Gong too?

I don't give a damn about getting cured, period. I give the facial expression as sarcasm. You are way out of line, thinking that you know everything about deafness. You are asking questions which you don't listen at all. Stop it.

I'm sorry, Bebonang. I'm glad you told me; clearly I'm more clueless than I thought I was. I want to fix whatever I've done wrong, or listen to what it is that you're trying to tell me; I thought I was listening, but obviously if I wasn't I don't know what I missed. Should I just read for a while without posting anything? Or am I still way off base?

Well you sure have a lot of "talking points"... Perhaps reading for a while might be useful for you? Only you can make that determination...
