I just wait till someone walks by or if nobody does in a min or two.. I push button and as soon as I hear someone talk.. (but don't understand ) I say send someone out to take my order please.

Works for me.
 
That's usually what I do except I don't say anything after the button. Awkward, though. Darn those good slushes at Happy Hour prices. Lol

When I wore HAs, I couldn't tell the difference between the sound of rain pelting the brick street in Richmond Va (Monument Ave in the Fan section of Richmond) and the crackling of fire in the fire place.

When I first got my CI, I couldn't hear the difference between a downpour and running water in the apt so I was quite concerned that I was flooding my apt as a result.

Yeah, I was looking at d/hh carbon monoxide/smoke detectors and the prices where just through the roof. All I need is the strobe light to get my attention. Is there a way I could rig a standard one to also flash a strobe as well??

Also those CapTel phones look expensive - the site just says pricing varies by state.

However the SonicBoom alarms are well within my price range. I may order one this week as I've found myself sleeping through my alarms this week.

I'm not officially on my own yet. I may have to wait until I get moved into the apartment before I can do any of this as I will have to prove that I am on my own and that I am the only adult in the house with a dependent child.

Is there a 'handicap access' button on those darn sonic signs? If not, there should be!

I feel a bit ridiculous flagging down a carhop.

I just prefer to go to a place where I can go in and order a to go meal and be done with it. It won't kill me to walk a few extra steps.

I will wait until after I have moved into my apartment before I apply as I will probably have to show what my income is versus my expenses. Will they require a copy of an audiogram within the previous 12 months?

In SC, income doesn't matter. All Deaf/HoH residents are eligible for free VRS, TTY, CapTel, etc. You just have to prove that you need one (fill out the paperwork), and have the connections in place. By connections, I mean you have to have your own electricity, high-speed internet (for VRS), or land line phone service (for TTY, CapTel).

The tty is in the web address because of other companies etc. that have a address that starts with ITAC. The Illinois agency offers much more than TTY's. But, because none of the cell phone companies pay anything into the program they offer no cell phone equipment.

What are the Eligibility Requirements?

* You must be a legal resident of the State of Illinois
* You must have working land line telephone service at the address you show on your application form.
* You must be certified as Deaf, Hard-of-Hearing, Speech-Disabled or Deaf-Blind by:
o Licensed Physician,
o Speech-Language Pathologist,
o Audiologist,
o or designated DHS/DRS Counselor.

* There are no age or income restrictions to qualify for the programs

An idea for Halloween. One year I bought a roll of bubble wrap and laid in on the short sidewalk from the driveway to the porch (using large tape to somewhat secure it), then covered it with straw. My husband said that the teenagers would react to it...if he was in the house looking out the window, but not if he was at the open door.

That reminds me when I was 5/6 asking Dad if he gone mad, something wrong with his head and telling him sign thing is not person. Dad laughed and I didn't understand what so funny.

It's like it goes past your ears and right into your spine. Certain scraping sounds will give me goose bumps.
 
My pleasure! The world is a noisy place, but you tune a lot of noises out that you get used to. It's like seeing things without really looking at them. If a blind person were to get sight, they would get visually over-stimmed very quickly. Same with sounds.

BTW, cats purring is one of my favorite sounds. Some cats purr louder than others, and if they're doing the mashy dance on a blanket - the purr is on!!!
