Well, you have been closer to those people than I have. Yes, it is very difficult to get people to a reputable treatment center that will get them sober. Lot of people don't make it and repeat where they have left off. I've seen a few people don't get off drugs. The only way is to stop is they WANT help to stop, not the people at the treatment center, pretty much.

Wanting help is the first step. The second step is asking for that help from the people that can help you. An addict or a drug abuser needs treatment because if is doing what they think is the thing to do that got them into drug use to begin with. They have to learn a new way to handle problems and live their life. If they don't, they will die as active alcoholic and addicts. That is the hard, cruel truth.

Some rehabs are a total joke, waste of the taxpayer's money...Sequoias is right. The only way someone is to get off drugs is their determination and sole desire to stop....I've 3 relatives who were deeply involved in drugs and dealing them also...It took 10 years of prison time to get 1 off of them, even tho' he still did drugs in prison! and still it's a daily struggle for him...He had to leave the state. Same as for another relative, on drugs since a teen and now 41 years old...teeth ruined...can't get a job, convicted of welfare fraud/food stamp fraud, list goes on and on...now a homeless person....Another 1...knows how to "work the system"...still receives welfare/food stamps/aid to children...all the "bells & whistles" the State has to offer....She has been reported time and time and time again....still manages to "laugh" about how she can do drugs and get welfare aid....

Where I live, anyone with a felony record cannot live here....still there are those who know how to get around this....especially the druggies and dealers....time and time again, the police have been called...Even a 10pm curfew does not deter them from walking the streets here and trying to deal drugs....even my own boys have been offered drugs and asked if they can buy any....I even confronted 3 young men, who offered my son Pot....then I called Security....even one of my neighbors last year who smoked pot on his balcony/patio, along with several other young people...I called Security and they were evicted.....

I'm all for the drug testing here in Florida. I'm a Senior Citizen, and do not qualify for Welfare or Food Stamps....I've never received them. And I've no qualms for those who really need State Assistance, but I'll be damned if I agree for those who abuse the system by selling their Food Stamps for drugs and alcohol!...It burns me up.

The 3 people you have described to me haven't even come close to recovery. But they are a good example of why no one will get clean until they are ready to, and why treatment is necessary to teach them skills for living life a different way. An alcoholic or drug addict that does not make fundamental changes in their lives is just an aldoholic or addict without their substance in their system for a short period of time. They will eventually go back. This belief that "I can do it on my own" and "I just need to stop using and everything will be fine" are the two thoughts that are responsible for all the relapses that occur. In fact, believing that they don't need to make any changes other than using is why relaspse is considered a feature of the disease.

Drug and alcohol abuse and addiction is not a moral flaw. It is a disease. It cannot be cured. With the proper skills and changes, the individual can control that disease to the point that use is not necessary for them.

Don't get me started on 24 beer pack per day. :P

I remember reading that André the Giant drank 127 bottles of beer before passing out. I think it was at a hotel bar or something.

Well, start toughen up drug testing for everyone who applies for a job. I just don't like how politicians pick on poor people too much. Not all jobs require drug tests.

Yep!....Especially the young people...say 18, who have applied for food stamps and got them, (who have passed the "test") by either refraining from smoking dope in order to be able to pass it....or ingesting a substance to rid their system of any trace of the drug.....(and the young people know exactly how to do this!)....

Then here's what so many people do....once they get the food stamps....they also go to plasma centers and donate blood several times a week... $$ to be made there....and don't even bother to apply for a job, knowing they would fail the drug test.....so the cycle keeps repeating over and over....

A lot of 18 and over adults even "share an apartment"....and none of them have a job....An adult, age 18 and over, can get up to $300 a month on food stamps...plus they can get up to $75 a week donating plasma....

So why even "try to get a job"?....They can sleep all day...smoke dope all night and run the streets....

That's America for you!

He no doubt had a huge liver!:giggle:

Seriously...that is some kind of tolerance!

Well, I guess it's a good thing I'm Canadian.

True that. Vodka as well. People reach toxic levels of alcohol poisoning long before they feel the effects of with these two substances. Because there is a delay, they end up drinking more than they would if they felt the effects immediately, and they accidentally overdose.

Stay away from the progressive happy hours. If you participate in one, stop after a couple of places. Very dangerous.

On the whole, Canadians are more humane regarding their treatment of any individual that has a mental disorder than are Americans. Americans are so quick to label everything some form of moral decay in the individual. They can't seem to see the moral decay in the society, though, that creates so many of the situations that the individual is only reacting to.:dunno2: I'm not sure why that is.

Or in the legal system. Or the medical profession, or one of the other white color professions. It is a white collar drug of abuse. Crack is the cheap version of cocaine, and is considered to be the low income version. That is why penalties for possessing, using, and distributing crack are much more severe than those for powder cocaine. Even though it is the same drug. It is the social construction of our drug laws create more severe penalites for the poor than for the well to do.

The proposal to urine test anyone applying for assistance is just another indication of that stratification and is indicative of what is wrong in our society.

I wish they would drug test all the politicians and judges. Give them the hair test!

You cannot donate several times a week constantly, a fyi

and if you lie on your food stamp application (Single household for instance) that is called a fraud, and a felony.

You will get caught.

Right. Twice a week max. The first five times pay rather well. I checked out my local plasma center a few weeks ago and the payment schedule is as follows: !st time 40 2nd time 45 3rd time 40 4th time 45 5th time 50 then it is 25 ans 35 for the rest of the donations thereafter.

If they are going to enforce testing for others, then they need to be tested, as well. What is good for the goose is good for the gander.

I have noticed that a large number of Americans are largely misinformed about pretty much everything outside of the USA. For instance, there's a common disdain for Europe. I've came across quite a number of Americans who strongly disliked the French and I asked them why, they didn't have an answer. Jingoism is also one of the reasons, it somehow give them the illusion that the USA is a perfect society, which it isn't. In fact, there's no such thing.

Imperialism is also a growing problem. They are carrying their own interests into other countries. This is causing a large number of problems for the other countries. The self-righteousness is a real problem these days. I hear about it all of the times. The ironic part about the people being self-righteous is the fact that they are often hypocrites.

I agree with you completely.

I look to British models quite often for care of the seriously mentally ill. They are far more humane and receive far greater benefit than do so many of the models in the States. For instance, England outlawed the use of restraints for actively psychotic individuals in Victorian times. They realized that it just escalated the psychosis. The States are still using them.

I'm just telling it like it is...as for donating plasma...they can catch buses to different plasma centers...so yes, I do know of 2 that donate 2-3 times a week...and they both has holes in their arms from it...

As for Food Stamps...apply as "Homeless" and you automatically get them...BUT...you must have an "address" to do this...Usually, they will use a relative's address, but actually don't live there....The person will also get a "notice" in the mail at that address, needing to re-apply every 3-6 months...
so the relative knows what's going on.

Of course it's a Fraud & a Felony!....Ever wonder how many people get by with doing this?....It's very easy, and it's done, has been done for many, many years...and will continue to do so if something is not done about it.

Wait...how is it a fraud if the person is actually homeless? And many people who actually have a home but are underemployed as a result of the economy get foodstamps. You don't have to be destitute to get them.

Have you reported the people who are defrauding the government?
