Again, it's not all about you. You need to do some soul searching about your role in the Deaf community.

No, she is n the process of defining herself, making sense of who she is and how she is like others, how she is different. She's not an adult, so no, I'm not claiming she's doing it at the level of an adult.

But again, it's not for you to determine whether or not she is culturally Deaf or whether or not she sees herself as Deaf.

No, she isn't. Defining oneself is a task of adolescence and early adulthood, not early childhood.

You are contradicting yourself. First you say she can't comprehend it as an adult, and then you say she sees herself as Deaf. The two are diamentrically opposed.

You are right. When she comes to an age where she is capable of defining herself, she will do so. It is not for me to define her. Nor is it for you to define her. That is her responsibility, and she will take that responsibility on when she is much much older than 5. At 5 she simply cannot do it.

The are also different stages of moral development. A person cannot fully understand her role in a community until her moral development is complete.

True, that. Just read a little Kohlberg. At the age of 5, she hasn't even grasped the concept of conservation yet, much less her role and responsibility to a community.

So. Incredibly. Predictable.

Wah, wah, wah. Stop playing the victim card Grendel!! We see right through it. LOL.

I love how some posters have appointed themselves the Almighty to speak with- not for (no- of course not) the Deaf. The Almighty has the last say and is the only one who really knows and understands what it is to be d/Deaf. I'm so sorry you don't get that
Grendel!

What's the phrase? "nanny, nanny, boo, boo!!"

OMG, here comes another one.

You are so clueless that you don't even grasp the fact that I have not appointed myself to speak with the Deaf. The Deaf themselves have granted me that privilege. One I am sure you will never be offered, and I suspect that truly bothers you.

The Deaf are the ones that understand what it is to be Deaf. They have taught me what it means. What a shame you are incapable of coming down off your hearing throne long enough to learn a bit yourself.

Just in case my sarcasm was lost in text- Grendel- you are great. Responding to false accusations and absurdity is not playing the victim.

Totally.

I am up all night, wringing my hands in contemplation of the fact that I haven't been "granted that privilege." I must recount my ways and beg forgiveness.

Your sarcasm was not lost; it was simply ineffective and childish ranting. True sarcasm requires a level of maturity you evidently have not managed to achieve.

Twist and turn, twist and turn. You are earning no points by playing your victim card, either.

Right.

The childish comments add so much to this meaningful conversation.

I 'm off to read some Percy Jackson. I highly recommend it. Share it with a kid in your life. :)

Recount?

If it is not an issue for you, why are you here? You have made all sorts of attempts, manipulative ones at that, to gain the acceptance you so strongly desire. All there in black and white.:laugh2:

You remind me of the child that covers their eyes, and then says "You can't see me!"

I believe I will sign off and enjoy some Upton Sinclair.

My daughter sees herself as Deaf. She gets it at some level and it's important to her. She has a strong basis for feeling this way.

We've been all through this before when PFH defined his child as Deaf, some people said they affiliated early, some later; you've explained your position. I disagree with you. I don't know why you feel some need to hammer away at this. I don't know why you feel you need to proclaim who can be considered Deaf, and who can't. It's not for you to say.

Your daughter is not capable of understanding what Deaf entails. She is a 5 year old. She understands things as a 5 year old understands them.

Fine. Disagree with all of the well known facts of child development. That is just one more topic on which you are deluding yourself.

Nor is it for you to say, yet you consistently attempt to define your daughter as Deaf.

Tell me, when will she be publishing her theories on cultural identification? The age of 6?

You are hearing. I'd tone down the defensiveness.

Why am I here?
I want to be.

Why are you here?

And just FYI- I'm accepted by those that matter. I'm also respected within my community at large for what I do. The voice I give to individual needs, the main one being deafness.

So, I'm quite satisfied with where I'm at. I've never made a habit of basing my self esteem on a handful of those who just want to fight and hate on others for making a different choice. My world is filled with linear thinking, pragmatic people. I try not to assosciate with people who have nothing but negativity and venom to spew. Unfortunately, some of those people just can't be avoided.
