How are people dealing with the Heat WAVE!??

I agree with the idea to check on the elderly neighbors, that reminds me of what happened with that terrible Chicago heat wave some years ago-

That was terrible how many people dies from not having any a/c ! When I was a health aide I had client and she only weight 93 lbs. When I got to her apartment during a heat wave I found her almost passed out ! The health aide that took care of my client in the AM dressed her in a winter nightgown and buttoned up all the way up my client neck then had her sit in front the window!! No one had done her laundry during the week ,and she had no summer clothes to wear! If my client did not have a heath aide BID she would been dead from a heat stroke! I could not believe how dumb the first heath aide was to leave a 90 years old lady like that! The heat can be really dangerous to our elders and babies!

for Californians... anything below 75 deg is cold to them
for me - anything below 55 deg is cold to me.

I want my 70's! Fall, where are you? :mad2:

Nahh  anything below 50 is freezing... 51-60 is cold... 61-70 is chilly.

I am serious what is hell on Saskatchewan is very hot 31, oh worst to Saskatoon hot odd!

100+ today, and I worked 6am-11am, and just a few minutes ago for a bit. Not gonna work during the hot hours.

Will be interesting to experience summer in three different states this coming August.

To those who have pets. Good idea to put ice cubes in water bowl so it stays chilled.

Its hot in Kansas and expecting hoover 108 degree. I dont mind heat as long as it didnt rain. Hot and dry is not issue for me here. I works outside all day and drinks 128+ oz of water everyday. Back in 80's, I used to mow customer lawn when it was already 115 degree. I get paid more during heatwave plus free bottle of pop

Saw on the news that this heat wave will hit us at the end of this week. Oh boy!

Correct me if I am wrong, but the heat issues only just started to hit the country, right? Typically it starts in like May and gets worse until September. It's not the case this year, though. My theory is that the major volanic eruption in 2010 in Iceland probably disrupted the global climate by sending out ash into the sky, which then blocks the sun's rays from warming up areas coming out of their winter months. So, the climate in the US was cooler for longer than normal, then the heat started hitting hard.

It's been in the mid 80's- low 90's around here. I do not do well in the heat though. Even this is too hot for me. :( I have a ceiling fan and a fan by the window. I wish I had ac

Heatwave was not new to me. Back in 80's, Heatwave was worst than 2011. Here in KS, it did hoover 115 degree in 1983 thus breaking record. Some south state like Oklahoma, Texas, Arizona did reach 120 degree. So now 2011, It will be between 100 to 108 degree this week here in Kansas. It's aint bad as it were in 80's.

I've been in Utah before and when it reached 98 degree. I felt normal, no sweat. It have to do with dry air typically in Western states. They use Swamp Cooler instead of Air Conditioner. It works more efficiently than Kansas. Swamp Cooler won't work in Kansas because of humidy. I learned that from friend who repair swamp cooler on top of roof and it's a very simple mechanism. Bottom is a shallow tub with toilet valve & ballcock keep water at tub level, tall foam lining around to absorb water and in bottom middle of it have big hole with big force fan to draw air in. It suck hot air through foam lining turning it to cool moist air and blow down into house ceiling. It was nice and cool inside. I bet their electric bill are very cheap comparing those who use Air Condidtioner that draws in lot of amperage to operate, AC pump have heater built inside that heats Freon then pump it through copper piping to furnace condenser grid and blower in furnace blow cool air into duct to cool the house. Take alot of electricity and high bills$$$$ I have AC for my big house. Betcha bills :eek2:

Most important thing are that keep yourself cool and drink plenty of water. Don't drink pops or alcohol to cool you off. It won't cool down your body. Can cause heat stroke if you do.

We are keeping it pretty closed up. And our dogs act very reluctant to go out to our backyard. They hate this heat.

The power went out here in the night for three hours last week and it was really uncomfortable. It could be a disaster if it does in this heat.

Our house is insulated too, Google. All the walls and the attic. Very thorough job.

So it may have more to do with your location actually.

My basement is not insulated and my walls are not either , I am not sure if any part of building has insulation in it!!

just got back from dog class and had a nice time, brought extra water for her.
My classmate was telling us they have no central air, but one window air conditioner that's not working well. They also have a motor home so last night they took their dogs and slept in the mobile home!

right now it's cooler temperature-wise, in the high 80's with heat index about 100, excessive heat warning.

It all depend how deep basement are in ground. If basement are deep in ground, will be nice and cool even it may be a bit cold in there during very hot day. I slept in my brother's room in basement and I slept so well and it's dark and a bit cold while outside was hoovering 100's out.

My house basement is nice and cooler than 1st floor. I put insulation all around the basement and put sheetrocks in. Once I finished basement, I would be napping nice and cool on futon
