should parents lose custody of fat kids?

My only kid is an Army Ranger and a military doctor (hold the applause Reba) and I would put him up against your juvenile delinquent any day of the week.

Whoa! Just had to label an innocent person like that? Label Jillio but leave her son out of it.

But are you saying that people who haven't taken the parenting classes shouldn't be allowed to bear and rear children?

Oh gee! What makes you think that? We all have to take algebra but many of us don't apply it afterwards. We should mandate that kids be taught about parenting, home economics, etc. in public schools.

Regardless of the motivation for these politicians, whether it be the glory of not being the fattest country in the world or making ties with liberals, it is objective and true to say that being overweight is unhealthy, but unlike a lot of health problems, it is typically VERY preventable.

See, this is a very heated debate not only because it can be see as a persecution against one's appearance, but also because it directly effects budgets for health care, and the meat and corn industries.

At first glance is very apparent why one would get defensive about the government taking their child due to an appearance, that would make any parent feel powerless and defensive, thus the fear of being out of control sets in. Despite these fears that can very well be justified and understood, I still strongly believe that the only way to solve the draining crisises that are happening around us is to be radical.

I am speaking from the perspective of an organic only vegetarian, so my passion is rooted in a different place than many people and parents who find it to be an attack, but whenever something elicits such a strong response, we must ask ourselves "Why?" Upon doing so I hope many realize, you are not the enemy. You are victims of a culture where food is produced with far more fat and far less nutrients. However, victims shouldn't lay down and die. This case is far less about making this something that happens every day. It is exemplifying the seriousness of obesity.

Outrageous or not, I think people SHOULD be in an uproar. And then ask themselves "Why?" And in doing so, I hope they too let their defenses down and let the facts speak for themselves.

There are COUNTLESS studies that prove the best medicine is vitamins. Your body and health are your most valuable resource, and it makes me truly sad to see people be apathetic to this. Just as it isn't fair to a child to have them raise them as racists or audists, it isn't just to have a child be raised with values not only lacking emphasis a trait that will let them lead a healthy life, but also inhibiting the possibility of wellness.

*steps off soapbox*

How would you enforce that? Hospitals don't want to keep healthy infants in their facilities, and I imagine social services would be overwhelmed.

Social services are overwhelmed because no one enforces this concept. Being proactive rather than reactive has its benefits. I'd rather social services hold healthy babies now than later when they have been neglected, abuse, or even worse.

I do hope that you have documented proof that my son is a juvenile delinquent, because if you don't, you have just committed slander, and I am not opposed to filing a civil lawsuit. So, I would suggest you either retract your slanderous statement, or get to proving it right here right now. Post has also been reported.

If you think you can call my kid a "mess" and get away with it, even with your "likers", you got another thought coming. I certainly will not back down to your threat, so you can go ahead and report yourself.

that's pretty offensive, rolling7. I know a few who were in that situation and they're doing it to prevent unplanned pregnancy... and they already have kids.

And I hope it's public information.

Did you even read the offensive post jillio said about me FIRST?

He is blatantly trolling you. He gets you banned, and you go poof. He gets a day or a week. I would call that a major victory for those that are like-minded as he is. Relax and put him on ignore. We need you much more than we need him. There are a lot more like him out there than there are of you. Trust me.

I don't like the idea of having social services or someone take the child or children away from the parents. I feel that it is up to the doctors to find out the cause of the child's obesity. I remembered about John Candy, the actor and comedian, who had a very bad case of eating disorder. He was not a child but there was no way for him to stop eating soo much food. He died of the eating disorder.

Any child growing up fat has a medical problem and I don't think it is not the parent's fault nor the child's fault. I am sure many parents are alarm and not know what to do with the child's medical problem.

As for rolling7, you should not tell us how to run our life like that. Whether the parents had made the decision to have a baby by accident or wanting to have a baby on their own decision. Raising the child or children is a hard task and we all have to go through with them. If you don't want to have a child, then that is your business and your choice. Never tell any adult what to do.

I remembered vividly about a white woman telling me how to raise my son thinking because I was deaf (still am today, lol). She felt that I should not have a child like my son. I was pretty upset with her and told her that my son is my business and not hers to tell me what to do with my life raising my son. I never wanted to see her or talked to her at all. If my son wanted to play with one of her children, I could not tell my son not to play with one of her children. This was his choice. Everyone have choices including you, Rolling7. So get a life and move on.

R7 has been on my ignore list for quite awhile and I plan to keep it that way. He likes to get under people's skin just for kicks and grins.

But like you pointed out, there's an agenda here with some of these folks. It's best to just ignore, ignore, ignore.

Whoa. Wow.....well, I understand about this because it is very, very sticky situation. I didn't give it a much thought about letting their own children being fat is considered as a child abuse. It may be, yes. It's every parents' responsible to give the children the proper nutrition and healthy food. That is why I've always wished McDonalds and other fast food companies and sodas never existed in the first place. It is not just that but also these children needs the old-fashioned ways by playing outside more and exercising activities rather than staying in their bedrooms playing game videos, watching tv, or computer most of the day daily. I do remember reading Caroline Kennedy's autobiography book about her life growing up after JFK's assassination, that her mother Jackie Onassis used to criticize Caroline's weight and belittled her, telling her that no men would ever marry her because she was too fat. It lowered so much of her self-esteem while she was growing up into young lady. She suffered anoxeria or bulmanic throughout her teens.

Wow, I guess Richard Simmons failed him. :(

I think I've read all the posts here but I may have missed something.

Excuse me but this goes back to a favorite harp of mine that I don't see mentioned at all.

In school kids are required to sit all day. If they have trouble sitting still for hours at a time the system wants to put them on medication and brand them ADD or ADHD or Hyperactive or something else. This was true 60 years ago -- It is true today.

The schools physical education programs were lousy when I was a kid, they were lousy when my children were kids, and with the cutbacks it is worse today.

You cannot keep a child from school or from the stores on the way to and from school.

You cannot punish a child for disobeying you while you were not present to control their actions.

The parents may or may not be the problem in any individual case, but the schools are doing nothing to mitigate the situation.

I have to consider the source on that one.:cool2: You take care of yourself and those babies. I am counting the days with you!

I guess I'm going to have to break down and open a FB account finally!

You'll be sorrrrrrry. :P

You need to understand that you are crossing a line I have never crossed. Your child was not referenced in any post I made. You, however, specifically made a statement and identified my son as the source of your statement. You have legally comitted defamation of character and slander, both of which are prosecutable offenses. Don't get so cocky that you actually believe in the anonymity of the internet. You can be traced and held liable for your hateful and dishonest rantings.
