Math Fun!!!

Obviously I did not attend college, and math was way down my list of electives in HS. Of course, there are some that would say they knew that by reading my other posts.

Order of operations was taught in HS. This was to ensure that when you get stuff like this:

2+4*4

Every student would arrive in the same answer: 18.

Otherwise, some students would also answer 24.

Oh shit, I just remembered! The multiplication and division operations are always done first before the addition and subtraction operations, correct? It has been so long since I have taken Alegebra but I used to be so good at it.

If the parenthesis are put into place then those rules wouldnt apply. Would have to do the operations in the parenthesis first regardless if they are division/multiplication or addition/subtraction.


Then, if that is the case, my answer was wrong.

If the parenthesis have been put in place at the begnining, then yes that would be correct but since they were not, the rule is to start from the left and work your way to the right until you get the answer. So, zero is the answer without the parenthesis.

I think that was very uncalled for but if you want to put people down, you just did a good job of it.

Well, I was never good at explaining how I solve math problems because I was never given the opportunity growing up because of shitty mainstreaming. So, blame it on the public school system for sweeping me under the rug so they wont have to deal with trying to understand my deaf speech. I just sat in class not being able to engage in the discussions on how to solve math problems.

No need to insult me. Insult the system of mainstreaming. Thank you.

You have four nines to use with + - * / to make 100.

9 9 9 9 = 100

fill in the above to make 100......

All simple basic math.

Have you guys ever seen those "proofs that prove" that 2=1? It goes something like this:

1. Let a and b be equal non-zero quantities (such as a = 4, and b = 2, but we will call them a and b for now)

a = b

4 = 4; Check.

2. Multiply through by a

a^2 = ab

4*4 = 4*4; Check.

3. Subtract b^2

a^2 - b^2 = ab - b^2

4*4 - 4*4 = 4*4 - 4*4; Check.

4. Factor out both sides

(a - b)(a + b) = b(a - b)

(4 - 4) * (4 + 4) = 4 * (4 - 4); Check

5. Divide out (a - b)

a + b = b

(4 - 4) * (4 + 4) / (4 - 4) = ... Wait, back up.
0 * 8 / 0 =... NOT CHECK. ERROR. ERROR.

Is this true? If not, where did it all go wrong?
