Does AD need an Audism policy?

I remember deaflore but i didn't know why it shutted down.

Yes it is quite amazing when you think about it. I was thinking the same as I read through this thread last night. When I first came here I had so much to learn and so much I wanted to know. I have never been one to fight or argue for the sake of things. I read and read and I see the points of views. I could name who likes who here and who doesnt like who on this site. lol Someone who got in trouble the other day said to me "How would you know, you are never here." OH OH, just because I don't post a ton doesn't mean I am not here. I like to be behind the scenes. Plus, I dont think everyone realizes when they fight and push "report" it goes right to our emails which comes right to my phone!
BUT I love this place, I have learned so much in a few years. Its nice when new people can see THE GOOD that comes from here and not all the bad.

And who knows? Maybe the newbies will soon get on board and join in the fight against audism! New recruits. Yay!

We should count our blessings. Does anyone remember Deaflore? It was a Deaf Forum and the owner shut it down suddenly. Just saying.

I remember that forum, I used to post there back in the ol' days.

I think I'm a more aware person for being on this forum. I also found a new side of me and have"met" people I enjoy learning from. Everyone teaches me something.
:ty:

You are one of the ones I was thinking of when I mentioned new members that have positive things to say about their experience here. And you have taught this old veteran a few things too.:P

I undestand PFH perfectly. Nasty, twisted and superior posts are unappealing. At the same time, it's an advantage to have audists here; both old and new members can learn from them and witness audism live, and not only from a dictionary.

Perhaps mods could delete some posts instead of closing threads?

It's strange how CI/audism is allowed, while religion is banned. Perhaps it's just the secular european inside me that don't understand how sensitive religion is in the states?

Could be fun with a thread about wether the Gawd is against CI or not, and who is most deafhood of Yeshua Christos or Moshe...

I operate from a secular perspective...I have never understood why people get so emotional when questioned regarding their views. I have always assumed it is because they have nothing solid on which to place their beliefs.

I don't remember Deaflore at all, that was before I even knew of online communities for the Deaf. If it shut down unexpectedly out of the blue then it is likely that he did not pay his annual domain dues or allowed the domain name to expire. The hosting site would immediately shut the site down for non-payment/non-renewal.

Aw green427, it's a waste of time to engage with those rude people, that's why I usually ignore them. I can just pretend their comment doesn't exist and enjoy what I am doing. :)

Here's my 2 cents..... The site is called alldeaf.....not allasl. There are many deaf people out there that are considered audist by other deafs. Seems like their opinion is just as valid. :dunno:

Count me in as against censorship as well.

Hear, hear! I seconded that. What else happened while I was away?

*whoooooooooooosh!* - disappears again.

Oh, kokonut, you don't want to discuss or debate anymore. We know your kind all too well. We wish you to come back again so don't disappear. I am wondering how are you doing hopefully now that you are in state of Washington or Washington, D.C. instead of New Mexico. Is that right? I am getting a little bit confused on where you moved last time. Serve me right for not remembering. Glad that you are alive and kicking as well. :)

I can agree, to a certain extent, that there should be a policy against audism on a deaf/hoh related website. However, it has been from my own personal experience, that people who are themselves audist, are unintentionally this way.

I know there is a difference between an unintentional audist and a flagrant avowed audist. I guess I just made those terms up - but I am just trying to make a point. The majority of hearing people have never been exposed to deaf culture. That is why each State has advocacy centers to promote cultural and technological awareness (in my State, it is GACHI).

I certainly haven't done any thorough research to come up with any statistics, but it would be my best guess that 9 out of 10 times, a hearing person whom has been exposed to deaf culture for the first time is going to automatically hold audist views, whether intentional or not.

The paternal audists are the worst ones (i.e. those that view the deaf as childlike and helpless). They show sympathy when none is needed. They bar deaf from activities because they believe the deaf can't do it, its too dangerous, etc. So yes, audism is very damaging in all of its forms.

I am not sure if an official policy will make it go away (it won't), as much as I would like it to. Maybe the site admin could write some basic forum rules regarding that topic? Its about the only thing I can think of.

 I...agree...with...him.

If you have an audist policy, then you have to figure out exactly what that means and expand upon what the moderator noted. It's messy and complicated. Like other posters have noted, some people are deaf and considered audist on here. But this is a deaf forum.

So...how about this? When you see someone posting an "audist" view, it's OK to educate them nicely on another perspective. People are responsive when you don't act like a shark attack. But turning it into a flame war just means you're breaking the rules.

What's more annoying than audists is people yelling "AUDIST!" every time they disagree. :/

If AD could come up with a basic philosophy and have new members click through it before they can post, maybe that would help. Like S. said, some people just don't know any better. :dunno2:

that's my .02 from a new person who's seen all of the above happen in the last two weeks. replace "audist" with something else, and you'll see it happens on all forums.

I would say no, as I'm sure certain posters (who ever they are) could eventually get banned for other reasons.
Everyones perception of audism is different, and in my first weeks posting here I was labeled an audist because I chose to use SEE/English with my son to start.
I am the farthest thing from an Audist, and I had to step away from AD for a period of time because the name calling was sucking the life out of me...and I am a strong woman. So no, I am against censorship and against banning people because one or some refer to a poster as an audist when in all reality they are not.
I'm not saying there isn't one audist on here (IDK), but what a loser they would be to hang out on a deaf forum if they think little to nothing of deaf individuals.

^^ this is one of the people that I was thinking of when I made my previous post. :P Everyone jumped all over her. Not fair at all.
