Does AD need an Audism policy?

True. I must agree. Auntie Reba is a great teacher and AD friend.

There are many others here who set up LD thread and took the time to encourage and coach and correct. I am forever grateful to my AD friends. One of which has moved close by. We have even started our own Deaf Coffee locally. I dont think that would have been possible for me without the mentoring of my AD friends.

That is one reason why it hurts to have someone drop in and be a really poor AD'er. I feel that although we are not cohesive, nor homogenous, that we had a pretty good group. Now I feel that we have become a rather contentious lot.

I am reminded of the school bully who will taunt, tease and even humiliate or hurt you. That bully is never called out by the officials, but when one gets enough of the bullying and retaliates in kind that person is punished or rebuked. I for one am pleased that we have such vociferous and intelligent members who do speak up regardless of the consequences.

Dixie, thank you for your post. This is a great example of the effects of audism. That was an awesome post and thank you very much for sharing.

Your welcome. :)

Of all the websites on the net, there are not many which are designed specifically for d/hh people to interact and express their views on many things. I'm not saying hearing people should not be on here, of course. That's not what I am saying. But it's important when hearing people join this forum they realize that the forum offers a variety of insights from deaf/hh people from all over the world, all with their individual experiences. When hearing people step in and tell me, as a deaf person, that I am wrong for my views, for my beliefs, or for thinking the way I do, then they crossed a line.

We are but a small island. There are not many places for us, but the one of the few places we do have, at least give us that. Give us the respect to listen to our side of things- and listening means being quiet, and really observe their lives from the lenses of their cameras, not yours. Watch and learn. When a hearing person tells me that my opinion or view has little or no value (as some posters have directly told me), then it makes me wonder - why the hell is this person on my island?

^^^ That's an excellent way to put it. I was thinking the same -- there's thousands, maybe even millions of sites that anyone can join. Yet how many are geared towards the deaf? Virtually just about one or two. And when hearing people say they take offense to OUR (yes, the deaf's) use of terminology like 'oral skills', just for example, well .. guess what? It's OUR, yes OUR, OUR, OUR, OUR, OUR, OUR choice what we want to call our speaking skills. Not theirs. And that's just one example alone. They don't get to stomp all over us to the point that we want to leave and go to another deaf forum. What other deaf forum? ... Show us some respect, for crying out loud.

I have to invent "Felinism" it's where humans opress cats to the point where they give up and just pose pretty for pictures... like your signature.

Thats why I know a few cats that can also be named Antichrist. They know this is happening and are speaking up for other cats. They will not accept being manipulated like the other passive cats.

I like it! And, my cats all have a mind of their own. I don't change 'em. I let them be cats.

(Except when I make them pose pretty. )

Even Freedom of Speech has guidelines. We all know that one cannot yell "Fire!" in a crowded movie theater. We should also know not to attempt to gloat in saying "Hey you guys, the CI movement is growing and it will get you in the end, and nothing you do or say will change it, mwahh hah hah." That has happened in here before. Just saying.

I think some people are confusing belligerent CI supporters as something that needs to be snuffed out. I find it more true that there are shortages in the moderating of the forums. Where there were sometimes 2 or 3 moderators online a day, it seems that some have faded out. What we really seem to have are trolls all over the place, on both sides. It is a sign of the times; public anarchy. How many people drive the speed limit? How often do people drive through a red light?

While I stay out of the CI debate, and try to avoid audist threads, censorship is a scary thing. I did not join AD thinking I had to conform to a set of opinions. The interactions of the members here is seen by countless lurkers. Granted, there are millions of other forums available to hearing people. If someone becomes an irritating poster, ignore them.

Reminds me of "Harvard Pencil Boy" a member since banned. A crowd followed him everywhere to complain about his posts. Never bothered me. Why don't people take advantage of the tools provided by AllDeaf and ignore/avoid these members that are a problem? Why engage them if you cannot change their minds? If we start to censor member views, why stop at audism? All you gun owners should feel me here. Where does it end?

Someone yelling "Fire" in a crowded theater is much different from someone yelling "CIs are great" in AllDeaf.

I feel the same way. I'm uneasy about censorship, too. However, even the 1st amendment comes with it responsiblity. For instance, you can't yell fire in a crowd. Disrespect for a group of people also shouldn't be condoned here any longer.

Maybe if I spent more time in the CI debates, I would feel the same way.

:gpost::applause: and well-said....thks swk...

Here's my 2 cents..... The site is called alldeaf.....not allasl. There are many deaf people out there that are considered audist by other deafs. Seems like their opinion is just as valid. :dunno:

Count me in as against censorship as well.

It took me long time to find a good Deaf community to communicate with and to be able to communicate in a way that is comfortable for me and to not be laughed or made fun of. I came here *because* it's geared to Deaf community. Our island for a change.
