For him, it's not even early; I think he has over 30 years in service. Minimum retirement is usually at 20 years.for correction.
I think he will opt for early retirement

Wirelessly posted
Being technical, are we?
There is no minimum retirement age for the military. Maybe you're thinking of Federal civil service where they combine age and number of years service.regardless of age?

Yup, my father retired from Marines when he was 38 years old.
How many years did he put in?
21 years.
Please add myThank him for his years of service, Foxrac!

unconfirmed information - General McChrystal has submitted his letter of resignation. I certainly hope Obama and McChrystal can work it out because from what I see - McChrystal is the right man for Afghanistan but it is unfortunate that he misbehaved. His background shows that he is clearly a strong intelligent commander.
I bet Obama will have a private meeting with him and forgive him. At least, I hope so.
I agree but then.... if he's a true soldier - this wouldn't happen.4th generation soldier graduated from West Point. The genuine article - the real deal.
The true soldier, the real patriot.
Huh..... doesn't that contradict with your post #10?Fired for calling the president and his staff doo doo heads.
McChrystal does not directly criticize Obama in the article,
"Griping" within the inner circles of the military is common but it's kept within the ward room (where officers meet together). Where the general crossed the line is letting those "gripes" and observations go public.
He should have kept his personal observations to himself until he retired. Then he could write his memoirs and make a profit from his criticisms. (semi-joking)
Thank him for his years of service, Foxrac!

You typed in big red font -
He wasn't fired. McChrystals handed in resignation the day before meeting and Obama accepted it today. and he made fun of Biden, not Obama but he did express his negative thought about Obama as Commander in Chief to journalist.... which is a big no-no
For any true soldier and a real patriot - one would not undermine the chain of command. It's a shame that his behavior does not meet the the standard that should be set by a commanding general.
But hey.... at least a commanding general was dismissed on valid ground... unlike in Bush Administration. I will never forget what Bush Administration did to Colin Powell.
they fired him for comments he did not say.
